What is unemployment now - NYS Department of Labor benefit amounts and process in 2025?

I'm completely new to this and honestly have no idea what unemployment even is anymore. My job just ended last week and everyone keeps telling me to file for unemployment but I don't understand what that means in 2025. Like what is unemployment now compared to what it used to be? How much money do you actually get from NYS Department of Labor? Is it still the same process or did everything change? I'm seeing all these acronyms like UI and adjudication and I'm lost. Can someone explain what unemployment benefits actually are now and how the whole system works with NYS Department of Labor?

Unemployment insurance (UI) is basically temporary financial assistance when you lose your job through no fault of your own. In New York, the NYS Department of Labor administers these benefits. You can receive up to 26 weeks of payments, and the amount depends on your previous earnings - typically around 50% of your average weekly wage, up to a maximum of $504 per week in 2025. The process involves filing an initial claim, then filing weekly claims to continue receiving benefits. You'll also need to meet job search requirements.

Okay so $504 maximum per week - that's actually more than I expected. Do I have to prove I'm looking for work every week?

The system is pretty straightforward now. You file online through my.ny.gov and create your NYS Department of Labor account. After your initial claim, you file weekly claims every Sunday to certify that you're still unemployed and actively seeking work. The job search requirement is 3 job contacts per week. If there are any issues with your claim, it goes into adjudication where they review your eligibility. Most people get their first payment within 2-3 weeks if there are no complications.

3 job contacts per week seems like a lot when there aren't many openings in my field. Do they actually check all of these?

Just went through this process myself last month. The hardest part is actually getting through to NYS Department of Labor when you have questions. Their phone lines are constantly busy and the online chat is useless. I ended up using a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Made the whole process way less stressful when I could actually talk to someone about my claim status.

How much does that service cost? Seems like we shouldn't have to pay extra just to reach NYS Department of Labor.

I get the frustration but honestly it was worth it for the peace of mind. Much better than spending hours on hold or getting hung up on.

unemployment is basically the government paying you while you look for a new job but its not that much money and theres a ton of paperwork. you have to file every week and prove youre looking for work or they cut you off. the whole system is designed to make it hard to get benefits honestly

The 2025 process is much more digital than it used to be. Everything goes through the my.ny.gov portal now. One thing that catches people off guard is that your first payment might be delayed if you have any issues during adjudication - like if they need to verify your employment history or reason for separation. That's when having a way to contact NYS Department of Labor directly becomes really important.

What kind of issues cause delays? I was laid off so it should be straightforward, right?
