What is the maximum unemployment benefit for 2024 in NY - need to calculate my potential weekly amount

I'm trying to figure out what the maximum weekly unemployment benefit amount is for 2024 in New York. I've been working as a software engineer making around $95k annually and might need to file for unemployment soon due to layoffs at my company. I want to understand what I could potentially receive from NYS Department of Labor before I have to make any decisions. The my.ny.gov website has different numbers in different places and I'm getting confused. Can someone clarify what the actual maximum weekly benefit rate is right now?

The maximum weekly benefit rate for regular unemployment insurance in New York for 2024 is $504 per week. This is calculated as 50% of your average weekly wage during your base period, up to that maximum. Since you're making $95k, your weekly wage would be around $1,827, so 50% would put you at the maximum. You'll also need to meet the job search requirements - currently 3 work search activities per week that you'll log in the NYS Department of Labor system.

Thank you! That's exactly what I needed to know. So even though my salary is higher, I'd still cap out at $504. Do you know how long the benefits last?

If you're having trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor agents about your adjudication status, I used claimyr.com recently and it actually worked. They have a system that calls for you and gets you connected to a real person. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. I was stuck in adjudication for 5 weeks and finally got through to resolve it.

Wait I thought it was higher than that? I could swear I saw $520 somewhere on the my.ny.gov site...

You might be looking at an old page or thinking of a different benefit type. The regular UI maximum has been $504 for 2024. Sometimes the site has cached pages that show older amounts.

Just to add - that $504 is before taxes if you choose to have them withheld. You can elect to have 10% federal tax taken out when you certify your weekly claims. Also make sure you understand the job search requirements because they will audit those and if you don't have proper documentation in your job search log, they can disqualify you.

Good point about the taxes. I'll probably have them withhold since I don't want a big tax bill next year.
