What happens at NY unemployment mandatory RESEA appointment? Got my first one tomorrow

Just got notified about my first mandatory RESEA appointment with NY unemployment tomorrow. They said it could take up to 90 minutes! Has anyone gone through this yet? They'll apparently be reviewing my work-search efforts, going over my resume, and creating some kind of "customized reemployment plan." The notice says: "During your appointment, we will develop a customized reemployment plan based on your individual circumstances. When We call you, the number that will come up on your caller ID is 888-209-8124. To receiving unemployment insurance benefits, you are required to attend mandatory virtual Reemployment Services and Eligibility Assessment (RESEA) appointments." I've only been receiving benefits for two weeks (applied on March 1st, 2025). What should I expect? Will they try to push me into jobs I don't want? I'm nervous!!!

I had mine last month! It's not as scary as it sounds. They basically just want to make sure you're actively looking for work and following the requirements. Have your work search records ready (at least 3 per week) and an updated resume. They'll ask about your job search strategy, what kinds of positions you're looking for, and any barriers to employment you might have. They might suggest some resources or workshops, but they're not going to force you into a job you don't want. The appointment only took about 60 minutes for me.

1 coin

Thanks, that makes me feel better! Did they ask for proof of all your job applications? I've been keeping records but I'm worried they'll want more detailed information than I have.

1 coin

just had mine yesterday. mostly a waste of time tbh. they just check boxes and read from scripts. make sure u have ur work search ready or theyll give u a hard time

1 coin

Ugh, that's what I was afraid of. Was it the full 90 minutes or did it go faster? Did they suggest any particular resources that were actually helpful?

1 coin

mine was like 45 min. they gave me some links to job boards i already knew about. nothing special

1 coin

RESEA is just another hoop they make you jump through!! I had my appointment in January and the career counselor spent half the time lecturing me about how I needed to "broaden my horizons" and consider jobs outside my field. Like I haven't been trying?!? They made me sign up for 2 workshops I didn't need and had to waste MORE time attending. Just nod and agree with whatever they say so you don't risk your benefits!!!

1 coin

Oh no, that sounds awful! I really hope my counselor is more understanding. I'm applying to jobs in my field but also branching out a bit. Just don't want to be forced into something completely unrelated to my skills.

0 coins

I think your experience is unusual. My career counselor was actually really helpful and understood my industry well. It probably depends on who you get assigned to. The workshops can actually be useful - I learned some new interview techniques in mine.

The RESEA program is designed to help claimants return to work more quickly. According to NY DOL statistics, those who participate in RESEA typically find employment 2-3 weeks faster than those who don't. During your appointment, you should have ready: 1. Your work search record with detailed information (dates, company names, position titles, application methods, contact information, and follow-up actions) 2. Current resume 3. List of questions regarding your job search 4. Any job offers you've received or interviews scheduled They'll verify your continued eligibility and help identify potential barriers to employment. Most appointments last 45-75 minutes. Be honest about your job search efforts - misrepresentation can result in benefit disqualification.

0 coins

This is super helpful, thank you! I've been keeping track of my applications but I didn't document follow-up actions for all of them. Do you know if that's a strict requirement? I'm worried they'll penalize me for incomplete records.

0 coins

Follow-up actions aren't strictly required for every application, but they show initiative. The main requirements are documenting when you applied, where you applied, the position, and how you applied. If you haven't been tracking follow-ups, just be honest about that. Start incorporating follow-ups in your future work search activities.

My RESEA appointment was actually last week but I missed the call because it came from some random number I didn't recognize. Turns out they do call from that 888 number they mentioned but my phone showed it as "Potential Spam" lol. Had to reschedule and was worried they'd cut off my benefits but they were understanding. Just make sure you're ready to answer when they call!

0 coins

Oh that's good to know! I'll make sure I answer even if it looks like spam. Did they give you a hard time about rescheduling?

0 coins

nah they were cool about it, just told me it was important not to miss the rescheduled one. guess they know everyone's phones flag those 888 numbers these days

0 coins

I had the worst time trying to connect with them for my RESEA! They kept calling exactly at the scheduled time but the call would drop immediately. After trying to reach someone at NYSDOL for THREE DAYS with no luck, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an actual person in 15 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE. Got my RESEA rescheduled and everything worked out. The actual appointment was pretty straightforward - resume review, work search verification, and some job suggestions. Just be prepared in case you have technical difficulties!

0 coins

That sounds stressful! I'm saving that website just in case I have similar problems. Was the RESEA itself helpful once you finally got it rescheduled?

0 coins

It was actually more helpful than I expected! The career counselor gave me some good feedback on my resume and suggested some industry-specific job boards I hadn't tried. Nothing earth-shattering, but worth the time. And definitely keep that Claimyr site handy - trying to reach NYSDOL by phone is nearly impossible otherwise!

I've been through two RESEA appointments since starting my claim in January. Here's what happened in mine: - First call was about 50 minutes, second was shorter (about 30 min) - They verified my ID by asking personal questions - Reviewed my work search records in detail (they picked random weeks to check) - Asked about my previous employment and skills - Helped revise my resume (actually got some good tips) - Assigned me to a virtual workshop on interview skills - Gave me links to industry-specific job boards They're mostly checking that you're actively searching and meeting requirements. Be honest, have your records organized, and you'll be fine. The career counselors genuinely want to help - they're not trying to catch you doing something wrong.

0 coins

This is exactly the kind of detailed breakdown I was hoping for! Thank you! I feel much more prepared now. Were they strict about the format of your work search records or just that you had the information?

0 coins

They weren't super strict about the format - I just had a spreadsheet with columns for date, company, position, application method, and notes. The important thing is having the actual information. They did ask for specific details about a few applications, so make sure you can talk about each job you applied for. Good luck tomorrow!

0 coins

anybody know if u can reschedule these things? got mine next week but just got an interview scheduled for same time

0 coins

Yes, you can reschedule! There should be a phone number on your appointment notice. Call that number and explain you have a job interview. They're usually very accommodating for interview conflicts since that's literally the goal - to help you find work. Congratulations on the interview!

UPDATE: Just had my RESEA appointment and wanted to share how it went! It lasted about 55 minutes. The career counselor was actually really nice and helpful. She: - Verified my identity (asked for last 4 of SSN and DOB) - Reviewed my work search activities (seemed pleased with my documentation) - Asked about my skills and previous experience - Gave me feedback on my resume (suggested I quantify my achievements more) - Recommended two job boards specific to my industry - Assigned me to a LinkedIn optimization workshop next week Overall, it was much less stressful than I expected! She wasn't pushy about taking any job - she actually encouraged me to focus on positions that match my skills. Thanks everyone for your advice and helping me prepare!

1 coin

Great to hear it went well! The LinkedIn workshop might actually be useful - I found that improving my profile there led to more recruiter contacts. Keep us posted on your job search!

0 coins

Glad you got a good counselor! Mine was nowhere near as helpful. Did they tell you how often these appointments happen? I'm dreading my next one.

0 coins

That's awesome that it went so well! I'm currently waiting for my first RESEA appointment to be scheduled and this gives me a lot of hope. Did they mention anything about how frequently these appointments happen? I'm wondering if it's a one-time thing or if they'll call me back periodically throughout my claim.

0 coins

@Paolo Conti She mentioned that RESEA appointments are typically scheduled every 12-16 weeks while you re'receiving benefits, but it can vary depending on your individual circumstances and how long you ve'been claiming. Some people might get called more frequently if they re'having trouble finding work or if there are issues with their work search compliance. The good news is that once you ve'been through the first one, the subsequent appointments are usually shorter and more focused on checking in on your progress!

1 coin

Thanks for the update Samantha! This is really helpful for those of us still waiting for our first RESEA appointment. I'm curious - did they give you any specific timeline for when you might have your next appointment? Also, did the career counselor mention anything about what happens if you find a job before your next scheduled RESEA? I'm hoping to land something soon and wondering if I need to notify them or if the appointment just gets cancelled automatically.

0 coins

Great question! The counselor mentioned that if you find a job before your next RESEA appointment, you should notify them through the normal process when you stop claiming benefits. The appointment would automatically be cancelled once your claim ends. She also said they actually love hearing success stories, so they encourage people to let them know when they land a position. As for timing of the next appointment, she said it would likely be in about 3-4 months, but that could change depending on how my job search progresses. Hope that helps!

I just had my RESEA appointment last week and wanted to add a few tips that helped me prepare! Beyond having your work search records ready, I'd recommend preparing a brief summary of your job search strategy and any challenges you're facing. My counselor really appreciated that I came prepared with specific questions about my industry and was able to have a more targeted conversation. Also, don't stress too much about having every detail perfect - they understand that job searching can be overwhelming and they're there to help, not judge. The appointment actually motivated me to be more strategic about my search. One thing I wasn't expecting was that they asked about my availability for work and any scheduling constraints, so be ready to discuss your flexibility. Good luck to everyone still waiting for their appointments!

This is really helpful advice! I'm still waiting for my first RESEA appointment to be scheduled and I'm definitely going to prepare a summary of my job search strategy like you suggested. Did they ask about any specific barriers you might be facing in your search? I'm dealing with some transportation issues that might be limiting my job options and I'm wondering if they have resources to help with that kind of thing.

As someone who just went through the RESEA process last month, I wanted to share a few additional insights that might help newcomers prepare. The most important thing is to stay organized and honest about your job search efforts. I created a simple spreadsheet tracking all my applications with dates, company names, positions, and follow-up status - this made the conversation flow much smoother. One thing that surprised me was how much they focused on my long-term career goals rather than just pushing any available job. My counselor actually helped me identify some skills gaps and recommended free online courses through the NY Career Zone website. The whole experience felt more like career coaching than an interrogation. For anyone feeling anxious about it, remember that these counselors genuinely want to help you succeed - they're measured on how many people they help get back to work, not on how many people they disqualify from benefits. Come prepared with questions about your industry and be open to their suggestions, even if some seem obvious at first.

This is such great advice, Isabella! I'm just starting my unemployment claim and haven't been assigned a RESEA appointment yet, but this thread has been incredibly helpful in preparing me for what to expect. The idea of creating a spreadsheet to track applications is brilliant - I'm definitely going to start doing that from day one. It's really reassuring to hear that the counselors focus on long-term career goals rather than just pushing any job. I was worried they'd pressure me to take something completely outside my field just to get off benefits quickly. The NY Career Zone recommendation is something I hadn't heard of before either - I'll definitely check that out while I'm waiting for my appointment to be scheduled. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences!

I had my RESEA appointment about 3 weeks ago and wanted to add my perspective! The whole thing was actually pretty painless once I got over my initial nerves. My counselor spent a lot of time asking about what specific types of roles I was targeting and why, which helped me realize I had been casting too wide a net in my applications. She suggested I focus on quality over quantity - applying to fewer jobs but tailoring my applications more carefully. One tip that really helped me prepare was printing out my work search log beforehand so I could reference it easily during the call. They also asked about any certifications or training I might want to pursue, and provided some resources for free programs through SUNY. The LinkedIn workshop they assigned me to was actually really valuable - I learned about using keywords in my profile that I hadn't thought of before. Overall, treat it as a free career consultation rather than something to dread. These counselors see hundreds of job searchers and have a lot of practical insights to share if you're open to hearing them!

Thank you so much for sharing this, Zoe! I'm new to this community and just filed for unemployment last week. Reading through everyone's experiences here has been incredibly reassuring - I was honestly terrified about the whole RESEA process after hearing some horror stories online. Your point about treating it as a free career consultation is such a helpful mindset shift. I love the idea of printing out the work search log beforehand too - that seems like it would make the conversation much smoother than trying to scroll through digital records on the phone. The SUNY training programs sound interesting as well. I'm in tech and wondering if they might have relevant certifications available. Did your counselor mention how to find out what specific programs are offered? I'm trying to use this unemployment period as productively as possible rather than just sending out applications randomly. Thanks again to everyone who's shared their experiences - this thread has been a goldmine of practical advice!

Just wanted to jump in as someone who's been following this thread while waiting for my first RESEA appointment to be scheduled. I filed my unemployment claim about 10 days ago and got the notification that I'd be contacted for a RESEA appointment soon. Reading through everyone's experiences here has been incredibly helpful and honestly a huge relief! I was getting really anxious about it after seeing some negative posts on other forums, but it sounds like most people have had pretty reasonable experiences. I'm definitely going to start organizing my work search records in a spreadsheet format like several people suggested - that seems like it would make the whole process much smoother. Also planning to prepare some thoughtful questions about my industry (marketing/digital advertising) and maybe research those NY Career Zone resources that were mentioned. Thanks to everyone who shared their detailed experiences, especially the recent updates. It's so helpful to have realistic expectations going in rather than just worrying about the unknown!

Welcome to the community, Mateo! I'm also pretty new here - just joined after getting my unemployment approved a couple weeks ago. It's so great to see how supportive everyone is with sharing their real experiences. I was in the same boat as you, getting really worried after reading some scary stories online, but this thread has been such a game-changer for my peace of mind. The spreadsheet idea is definitely solid - I started one right after reading the earlier comments and it's already making me feel more organized and prepared. Since you're in marketing/digital advertising, you might find the industry-specific job board recommendations really valuable when you get to your appointment. I'm in a completely different field (healthcare admin) but it sounds like they really do try to tailor their advice to your specific background. Good luck with everything, and thanks for contributing to this supportive thread! It's nice to connect with others going through the same process.

I'm scheduled for my first RESEA appointment next week and this entire thread has been absolutely invaluable! As someone who just joined this community after filing my claim two weeks ago, I can't tell you how much anxiety this has relieved. I was honestly terrified after reading some horror stories elsewhere online, but seeing everyone's mostly positive experiences here has completely changed my perspective. I've already started creating that spreadsheet everyone mentioned to track my job applications - such a smart suggestion! I'm in the finance industry and feeling much more confident now about discussing my job search strategy and career goals rather than just worrying they'll pressure me into any random job. Special thanks to Samantha for starting this discussion and for the detailed update after your appointment - that play-by-play was exactly what I needed to know what to expect. And thank you to everyone else who shared their practical tips and honest experiences. This community is amazing!

Welcome to the community, Lena! I'm also brand new here - just filed my claim last week and have been lurking on this thread trying to absorb all the great advice. It's incredible how much more prepared I feel after reading everyone's experiences compared to when I first got that RESEA notification and basically panicked! The spreadsheet tracking system seems to be the consensus best practice, so I'm definitely implementing that right away. I'm in retail management transitioning to corporate roles, so I'm hoping they'll have good insights for career pivots. Thanks to everyone who shared - this thread should honestly be pinned as a resource for newcomers! Looking forward to hearing how your appointment goes next week.

Just wanted to add my voice to this incredibly helpful thread! I'm brand new to this community and filed my unemployment claim about a week ago. Like many others here, I was really anxious about the RESEA process after getting that notification, but reading through everyone's detailed experiences has been such a relief. The consistent advice about organizing work search records in a spreadsheet format is gold - I've already started implementing that system. I'm in the education field (former teacher looking to transition into corporate training) and I'm actually feeling optimistic now about getting tailored career advice rather than just being pushed into any available job. It's amazing how much this thread has shifted my mindset from dreading the appointment to viewing it as a valuable resource. Thank you to everyone who took the time to share their real experiences - this kind of peer support is exactly what people need when navigating unemployment for the first time!

Welcome Gabriel! I'm also new here and just starting my unemployment journey after being laid off from my marketing role about two weeks ago. This thread has been an absolute lifesaver for easing my RESEA anxiety! Your transition from teaching to corporate training sounds really interesting - I bet they'll have some great insights about transferable skills and maybe even specific programs or certifications that could help with that career pivot. The education-to-corporate transition seems like it would have a lot of valuable crossover skills that a good career counselor could really help you articulate and market. I'm still waiting to be scheduled for my first appointment but feeling so much more prepared thanks to everyone's advice here. Best of luck with your appointment when it comes up!

I'm completely new to unemployment benefits and just filed my claim yesterday after being laid off from my software engineering position. This entire thread has been absolutely incredible for preparing me mentally for what's ahead! I was honestly panicking when I saw the RESEA notification in my paperwork, but reading through everyone's real experiences has transformed my anxiety into actual preparation. The spreadsheet tracking system that multiple people mentioned seems like such a no-brainer - I'm starting that immediately. As someone in tech, I'm curious if anyone has experience with how they handle industry-specific job searches, especially given how specialized some software roles can be. I'm hoping they'll understand that I can't just apply to any random office job and will help me focus on positions that actually match my skills. Thank you to everyone who shared their stories - this community support is exactly what I needed right now!

Welcome to the community, Liam! I'm also new here (just filed my claim about 10 days ago) and this thread has been an absolute game-changer for my peace of mind. As someone in a technical field myself (data analysis), I was worried about the same thing - whether they'd understand that our roles are pretty specialized and we can't just apply to generic office jobs. From what I've read in everyone's experiences, it sounds like the counselors are generally pretty good about understanding industry-specific needs and actually help you focus your search strategy rather than pushing random jobs. The fact that multiple people mentioned getting industry-specific job board recommendations gives me hope! I'm definitely following everyone's advice about the spreadsheet tracking system too. Good luck with your job search - the tech market is tough right now but having that career counseling resource seems like it could be really valuable for navigating it strategically.

I'm brand new to this community and just filed my unemployment claim three days ago after being unexpectedly laid off from my project management role. Reading through this entire thread has been such a blessing - I went from complete panic about the RESEA appointment to actually feeling prepared and even a little optimistic! The consistent advice about creating a spreadsheet to track job applications is brilliant and I've already started implementing that system. What really stands out to me is how everyone emphasizes that the counselors genuinely want to help rather than just check boxes or catch you doing something wrong. It's amazing how much everyone's shared experiences have shifted my perspective from pure dread to actually seeing it as a potentially helpful resource. The spreadsheet tracking advice is something I'm definitely implementing right away too. What really reassures me is hearing how the counselors seem to understand that different industries have different needs and timelines. As someone in HR, I know how specialized some roles can be, so it's encouraging to hear they don't just push generic applications. Welcome to the community, Fatima! I just joined a few days ago after filing my claim following a layoff from my graphic design position. This thread has been absolutely incredible - I went from having major anxiety attacks about the RESEA appointment to actually feeling like I have a game plan! Your point about the counselors wanting to help rather than just check boxes really resonates. I was so worried they'd try to push me into retail or food service jobs that have nothing to do with my creative background, but hearing everyone's experiences makes it sound like they actually understand industry differences. I've already started that spreadsheet tracking system everyone recommends - it's making me feel so much more organized and professional about my job search. It's amazing how this one thread has completely changed my outlook on what felt like a scary bureaucratic process. Thank you for sharing your experience and adding to this supportive conversation!
