What does overpayment mean on NYS Department of Labor unemployment claim?
I just logged into my unemployment account and there's a section that shows 'overpayment' but I'm not sure what this means exactly. I've been filing my weekly claims correctly and reporting all my part-time work hours. Does this mean I owe money back? I'm really confused about what triggers an overpayment and if I need to do something about it right away.

An overpayment on your NYS Department of Labor claim means they determined you received unemployment benefits you weren't entitled to. This can happen for several reasons: not reporting work income properly, being disqualified retroactively, or administrative errors. If there's an overpayment showing, you'll typically receive a notice explaining the amount and reason.

•Thanks for explaining! I haven't gotten any notice yet but I'm worried. How long do they usually take to send out the paperwork?

I had an overpayment last year for $2,800 because I didn't report some freelance work correctly. The NYS Department of Labor sent me a detailed notice showing exactly which weeks were overpaid and why. You can appeal it if you think it's wrong, but you have to act fast - usually 30 days from the notice date.

•Did you end up having to pay it back? I'm dealing with something similar and not sure if I should wait or try to contact them.

•I appealed it successfully because I had documentation showing the work dates were different than what they had. But trying to reach someone at NYS Department of Labor by phone was impossible - kept getting disconnected after waiting hours.

If you're having trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor about an overpayment issue, I recently discovered claimyr.com which helps you actually reach a live agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. I used it when I had questions about my claim status and actually got through to someone who could explain my overpayment notice in detail.

•That sounds too good to be true honestly. How much does something like that cost?

•It's worth checking out their site for the details. For me it was just about finally getting answers instead of spending days trying to call.

overpayments are THE WORST part of this whole system... they can come out of nowhere months later and suddenly you owe thousands. I got hit with one because apparently I was supposed to refuse standby work that I didn't even know was available?? Makes no sense

•Standby overpayments are tricky - they usually happen when there's a miscommunication about your availability status or if your employer reports something different than what you filed.
