New York Unemployment: Timeline for First Payment and SNAP Eligibility After Layoff
Just got laid off and filed for unemployment benefits. Wondering if people actually get their first payment within the 2-3 week timeframe they mention? Really can't afford to wait months for payment to start. Also curious about SNAP benefits - have some savings but no income now. Anyone know if having savings disqualifies you from SNAP?

I filed in June and got my first payment exactly 3 weeks after. Make sure you do your weekly certifications correctly and answer the questions honestly. The system is actually working pretty good rn compared to how it was during covid 👍

Pro tip: I found this website claimyr.com that helps you get through to an agent if you need to speak to someone. It costs $20 but saved me hours of calling. They dial and wait on hold, then connect you when someone picks up. Here's a video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

For SNAP, they do look at your resources/assets. Single person cant have more than $2750 in countable resources (checking/savings). Some stuff doesn't count like your house or car. Check ACCESS HRA website for exact details

Here's everything you need to know about timeline and getting paid faster: First payment usually comes 2-4 weeks after filing IF everything is clean (no employer disputes, ID verified, etc). Make sure to: - File your weekly claims every week, even if not paid yet - Double check your direct deposit info - Watch your email/mail for requests from DOL - Use claimyr.com if you need to reach someone (saves hours of calling) - Check your spam folder daily - Keep documentation of your layoff If you don't get paid in 3 weeks, something's probably wrong and you should try reaching them. Good luck! 💪
