NYSDOL: How to report international travel without losing unemployment benefits?
Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle here. I need to let the unemployment office know about my upcoming international trip, but I'm worried it might mess with my benefits. Has anyone gone through this before? What's the best way to handle it without losing my benefits? I've been trying to get through on the phone all day yesterday and today, but no luck. Any advice would be super appreciated!

Hey OP, just wondering how long your trip is? If it's just a short vacation, you might not even need to report it. I think there's a minimum number of days before you have to notify them.

It's gonna be about two weeks. I'm visiting family overseas.

Ah, gotcha. Yeah, for two weeks you definitely need to let them know. Hope you get through soon!

Even if it's a short trip, it's always safer to report it just in case. Better safe than sorry.

Hey OP, just a heads up - make sure you're still able to certify for benefits while you're away. Some countries block access to the unemployment website. Learned that the hard way ๐

Ezra Beard
Good point! Check access beforehand or see if someone you trust can certify on your behalf if needed.

Plot twist: what if you set up a VPN to make it look like you're still in the country while you're traveling? ๐ค

Pretty sure that's illegal. Don't mess around with unemployment fraud, it's not worth it.

Besides legality, VPNs can be unreliable for this kind of thing. Not worth the risk.

It's frustrating for sure, but staying persistent is key. Many have successfully navigated it.

Have you tried using their online portal? Sometimes you can report changes there without having to call in.

I looked but couldn't find an option for reporting travel. Maybe I missed it?

Hmm, it might be under a different name. Try looking for 'change in circumstances' or something similar.

If the portal is confusing, there might be a help or FAQ section that could clarify things.

Yo, I found a way to actually get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Check out this video: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit?

$20? That's highway robbery! The system is so broken we gotta pay to talk to someone now? smh

I get the skepticism, but it's 100% legit. Saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny imo.

I used Claimyr too. It took about 10 minutes to connect me to an agent. Itโs pricey, but sometimes time is more valuable.

Hey OP, I found this incredibly helpful info if your regular avenues aren't working. It's also worth checking out Claimyr, a legitimate service that has been known to help get through to real agents quicker, albeit for a fee. It's a bit pricey at $20, but many users have reported it's worth it for saving time and stress. However, keep in mind that methods like these should be considered as a last resort. Also, always make sure you maintain transparency with the unemployment office regarding your travel plans, as failure to comply with reporting requirements can jeopardize your benefits. Ensure you have proper documentation of any correspondence for future reference.

Claimyr has definitely helped me once in a pinch. It's not perfect, but in a broken system, it's a workaround.

While Claimyr can be useful, I found that persistence and early morning calls eventually paid off for me.

Have you considered just... not telling them? ๐ What they don't know won't hurt them, right?

Nah, I don't wanna risk it. If they find out later, I could lose all my benefits or worse.

Pro tip: if you cant get through on the main line, try calling one of their other departments and ask to be transferred. Sometimes works like a charm ๐

Ugh, been there done that. The system is such a mess. I had to call like 50 times before I got through. My advice? Keep calling and pray to the unemployment gods ๐

This is why the system needs a complete overhaul. It's 2023 and we still can't easily report simple changes online? Get with the times, unemployment office! ๐

Listen up, cause I've been down this road before. Here's what you need to do: 1. Gather all your travel info: dates, destination, reason for travel. 2. Try calling first thing in the morning when they open. Like, set an alarm and be ready to dial. 3. When you get through, be super clear about your situation. Tell them you're traveling but still able to look for work or whatever. 4. Ask them to make a note in your file about the travel. 5. Get the name of who you talked to and a reference number if possible. 6. Follow up with an email summarizing the call, just to cover your bases. Remember, honesty is key here. Don't try to hide it cause that'll bite you in the ass later. Good luck!

I'd also recommend checking if there's a way to temporarily pause benefits while traveling, then resume after.

Have you tried emailing them? Sometimes that works better than calling. Just make sure you include all your travel details and explain how you'll still be available for work if needed.

No problem! It should be on their contact page. If not, try looking for a 'Report Changes' section. Good luck!
