NYS Department of Labor waiting period for unemployment - how long before benefits start?
I just filed my initial unemployment claim with NYS Department of Labor last week and I'm confused about this waiting period thing. The website mentions something about a waiting period but doesn't really explain what that means for when I'll actually get paid. Is this separate from the adjudication process? I certified for my first week already but my payment history still shows $0. How long is this waiting period supposed to last and when should I expect to see my first payment hit my account?

The waiting period in New York is one week, which means you won't get paid for your first eligible week of unemployment. yeah the waiting period is annoying but at least its only one week. just make sure you keep certifying every week even if you dont see payment right away. i made the mistake of thinking something was wrong and stopped certifying for a few weeks

•This is really important advice. You must continue certifying weekly even during the waiting period, otherwise you'll lose those weeks permanently. The NYS Department of Labor system won't let you go back and certify for weeks you missed.

The NYS Department of Labor waiting period is just another way for them to save money on our backs. One week might not sound like much but when you're already struggling financially it's a huge deal. Other countries don't do this nonsense to their unemployed citizens.
