NYS Department of Labor waiting period for unemployment - how long before benefits start?

I just filed my initial unemployment claim with NYS Department of Labor last week and I'm confused about this waiting period thing. The website mentions something about a waiting period but doesn't really explain what that means for when I'll actually get paid. Is this separate from the adjudication process? I certified for my first week already but my payment history still shows $0. How long is this waiting period supposed to last and when should I expect to see my first payment hit my account?

The waiting period in New York is one week, which means you won't get paid for your first eligible week of unemployment. So if you filed your claim and were approved, you'll get paid starting from your second week of benefits. This is standard across most states and separate from any adjudication delays. Your first payment should come about 2-3 business days after you certify for your second week, assuming there are no other issues with your claim.

Oh that makes sense! So I won't get paid for this first week I certified, but I should get paid for next week when I certify again? That's actually not as bad as I thought.

yeah the waiting period is annoying but at least its only one week. just make sure you keep certifying every week even if you dont see payment right away. i made the mistake of thinking something was wrong and stopped certifying for a few weeks

This is really important advice. You must continue certifying weekly even during the waiting period, otherwise you'll lose those weeks permanently. The NYS Department of Labor system won't let you go back and certify for weeks you missed.

I'm in the same boat and it's been three weeks now with no payment! My claim shows approved but I'm starting to panic. Is this normal or should I be calling someone? I can't get through to NYS Department of Labor on the phone and their online chat is always unavailable.

Three weeks with an approved claim definitely sounds like more than just the waiting period. Check your payment history to see if there are any holds or pending issues. If you need to reach an actual NYS Department of Labor agent, try using Claimyr at claimyr.com - they can get you through to someone who can check your account. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works.

The NYS Department of Labor waiting period is just another way for them to save money on our backs. One week might not sound like much but when you're already struggling financially it's a huge deal. Other countries don't do this nonsense to their unemployed citizens.

I feel you on that. When you're already stressed about money the last thing you need is arbitrary delays. But at least it's predictable - some states have longer waiting periods.

Wait so if I just got laid off yesterday should I file immediately or wait? I'm confused about when this waiting period actually starts counting.
