NYS Department of Labor unemployment rates during previous administration - how does this affect my claim?

I'm trying to understand something about my unemployment claim. My neighbor keeps telling me that unemployment was super low a few years back and that somehow means I shouldn't qualify now or something? I'm confused because I lost my job in December due to layoffs at my retail company and filed with NYS Department of Labor right away. Does the overall unemployment rate from previous years have any impact on whether my individual claim gets approved? I've been getting my weekly payments but she's making me paranoid that there's some rule I don't know about.

The unemployment rate from any previous administration has absolutely zero impact on your individual NYS Department of Labor claim eligibility. Your claim is based on your work history, earnings, and reason for separation - not economic statistics. If you're receiving weekly payments, your claim was already approved based on your personal qualifications.

Thank you! That makes sense. I was getting really worried for no reason.

yeah my cousin said the same thing to me!! like somehow because unemployment was lower before that means we dont deserve benefits now?? makes no sense when you think about it

Your neighbor is mixing up macroeconomics with individual benefit eligibility. NYS Department of Labor determines your claim based on: 1) Sufficient work history in base period 2) Earnings requirements met 3) Separation wasn't due to misconduct 4) You're able and available for work. National unemployment statistics don't factor into these determinations at all.

This is really helpful! I had no idea there were such specific requirements. Where can I find more details about the base period calculation?

I had to call NYS Department of Labor last month about a similar question and couldn't get through for days. If you need to speak with an agent about your claim specifics, I found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that helps you actually reach someone. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Made my life so much easier when I had adjudication questions.

People love to make unemployment benefits political when it's just a basic insurance program. You paid into it through payroll deductions, you lost your job through no fault of your own, you get benefits. Simple as that.

Wait so if I worked part time for most of 2024 but full time the last few months before getting laid off, does that affect my benefit amount? I'm getting like $180 a week which seems low

Your weekly benefit amount is calculated based on your highest earning quarter in your base period. If most of your work was part-time, that would definitely impact the calculation. You can check your monetary determination on the NYS Department of Labor website for the exact breakdown.
