NYS Department of Labor unemployment claim - what caused unemployment after ww1 history research project help needed
Hey everyone, I'm currently on unemployment and doing some freelance research work to make ends meet. Working on a history project about what caused unemployment after WWI and I need to document my job search activities for my weekly NYS Department of Labor claims. Does anyone know if research work counts toward the work search requirements? I've been applying to regular jobs but also doing this project work. My claim status shows active but I want to make sure I'm following all the rules correctly. Has anyone dealt with documenting freelance or project work while collecting UI benefits?

For your work search log, you need to document actual job applications, not research projects. NYS Department of Labor requires you to apply for suitable work opportunities. However, if you're earning money from freelance research, you MUST report those earnings on your weekly claim certification. Any income while collecting unemployment needs to be reported, even small amounts.

•Thanks! So the research project earnings get reported but don't count as work search activities? I've been applying to other jobs too, just wanted to make sure I understood the requirements correctly.

yeah you definitely have to report any money you make while on unemployment, learned that the hard way when I got an overpayment notice last year

I had trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor when I had questions about reporting freelance income. Kept getting busy signals and hung up on. Finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me through to a real agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling and helped me avoid potential issues with my claim.

•That's interesting, I've been having the same problem getting through. How quickly did they connect you to someone?

•Usually within a few minutes compared to the hours I was spending trying to call directly. Worth checking out if you need to clarify the reporting requirements for your situation.

Just to clarify - for work search activities, you need to apply for actual job openings that match your qualifications. Research projects don't count unless you're applying to be hired as a researcher by a company. But definitely report any payments you receive as income on your weekly certification.
