NYS Department of Labor claim - is what is cyclical unemployment affecting my eligibility?
Hi everyone, I'm really confused about something on my unemployment application. There's a section that mentions different types of unemployment and I keep seeing the term 'cyclical unemployment' mentioned. I lost my job at a manufacturing plant in December when they had to reduce workforce due to slow sales this winter. My supervisor said it might be temporary but there's no guarantee. When I'm filling out my NYS Department of Labor weekly claims, should I be indicating anything specific about this being cyclical unemployment? Does it affect my benefits or job search requirements? I'm worried I'm not answering the questions correctly and it might mess up my claim.

Cyclical unemployment is just an economic term that describes job losses due to business cycles - like recessions or seasonal downturns. For your NYS Department of Labor claim purposes, you don't need to worry about categorizing it. You're just unemployed through no fault of your own, which makes you eligible for regular unemployment insurance. Focus on completing your weekly claims accurately by reporting any work you do and wages you earn. The economic theory behind why you lost your job doesn't change your benefit eligibility.

•Thank you! So I should just continue filing my weekly claims normally and not overthink the economic terminology?

yeah i think your overthinking this. cyclical unemployment is just when the economy goes up and down and people lose jobs because of that. like when covid hit or during recessions. your just unemployed, file your claims and look for work. the nys department of labor doesnt care about the fancy terms they just want to know if you worked that week and how much you made

The previous responses are correct - cyclical unemployment refers to job losses during economic downturns, but for NYS Department of Labor purposes, you're simply filing for regular unemployment insurance. However, if you're having trouble reaching someone at NYS Department of Labor to clarify any concerns about your claim, I had success using a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent when I couldn't get past the busy signals. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Really helpful when you need to speak to someone about claim specifics.

•Interesting, I've been trying to call for weeks about my adjudication issue. How does that service work exactly?

omg same situation here! lost my retail job right after Christmas when sales dropped. the store manager kept talking about 'seasonal adjustments' and 'cyclical patterns' but honestly who cares what they call it when you still can't pay rent lol. just keep filing your weekly claims on time every week and do your job search requirements.

The NYS Department of Labor system is so frustrating with all these confusing terms everywhere! They make everything sound so complicated when really you just lost your job and need benefits. I spent hours reading through their website trying to understand every little detail and it just stressed me out more. As long as you're not quitting voluntarily or getting fired for misconduct, you should be fine for regular UI benefits regardless of whether economists call your job loss 'cyclical' or whatever.

•Exactly! I was getting so anxious thinking I needed to understand all these economic terms to file correctly.
