Moving to Pennsylvania - how do I transfer my NY unemployment benefits?
Im relocating to Pennsylvania next week and currently receiving ny unemployment benefits. Does anyone know how to transfer the benefits between states? Do I need to file a new claim in PA or can I continue collecting from NY? Not sure what the process is and I definitely cant afford any gaps in payment. Already tried calling NY unemployment office like 20 times but cant get through to anyone. Appreciate any advice!

You'll need to file a new claim in pennsylvania. Your benefits don't transfer between states. Once you move, you're no longer eligible for NY unemployment since you have to be available for work in new york to keep collecting. You should apply for PA benefits as soon as you establish residency there. Hopefully there wont be much of a gap for you!

•oh crap, seriously? i didnt realize I would lose my benefits completely. will PA give me the same amount?

•No, PA has different benefit calculations. Your weekly amount will likely change based on their formula. Also make sure you officially end your NY claim - don't double dip or you'll be in big trouble.

•Thanks for the heads up. Now I'm freaking out about having to start over with a new state system. Took forever to get ny benefits going.

I was dealing with this exact situation last year! After calling for DAYS with no luck, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to a live agent. They did the calling and waiting on hold, then connected me when an agent picked up. The agent cleared everything up in like 10 minutes - turns out you have to officially close your NY claim and file a new one in PA. It was honestly the best money I spent to get this resolved quickly. Check out their video here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•100% worked for me. I was skeptical too but after spending 3 weeks trying to get through myself, I was desperate. They connected me to an agent who explained exactly what I needed to do for my interstate move.

•another magical solution that's probably just taking advantage of desperate people 🙄 unemployment system is broken enough without these 'services'

•I get the skepticism but this literally just gets you past the phone wait. The unemployment agent fixed everything for me once I got through. Without that I'd still be trying to figure it out on my own.

•wait does this actually work? been trying to reach someone for my case for WEEKS

•Yep - used it twice now. Both times I got a callback within a few hours. The agents can tell you exactly what to do for your move to PA.

When I moved to PA from NY last year, I had to completely start over with PA unemployment. Different system, different rules, different payment amounts. Make sure you report your change of address to NY unemployment ASAP so you don't get accused of fraud. And prepare for a potential gap in payments while PA processes your new claim.

Actually you might be able to continue getting NY benefits for a little while even after moving to PA IF you can prove you're still job searching in NY. There's a thing called interstate benefits where you can collect from your old state while living in a new one. But it's complicated and you need to talk to someone at NY unemployment to set it up properly.

•Wait really?? This would be amazing if true. Anyone else have experience with this interstate benefits thing?

•I did this when I moved from NY to CT. You have to be in a border area and willing to commute back to NY for work. If you're moving far into PA, probably won't qualify.

•I'll be about 30 mins from the NY border so maybe there's a chance?

This is literally the WORST time to move between states while on unemployment. The systems dont talk to eachother at all and you'll probably end up with weeks of no income. Why would you move now if ur on unemployment??

•Thanks for the super helpful comment 🙄 Not everyone has a choice about when they move. My lease is up and rent went up 40% in my building.

Here's what you need to do step by step: 1) First, let NY unemployment know about your move IMMEDIATELY. You can do this through your online account. This is super important to avoid fraud issues. 2) They will likely tell you that you need to apply for benefits in your new state once you establish residency there. 3) PA unemployment has a completely different system than NY. You'll need to create a new account through their website and file a new initial claim. 4) Bring documentation of your previous employment history, as PA will need to verify your work history to establish your benefit amount. 5) There will almost certainly be a gap between NY benefits ending and PA benefits starting. Try to prepare financially for this if possible. 6) If you're having trouble reaching anyone by phone (which is common), I highly recommend using Claimyr.com to get through to an agent. It completely eliminated the hours of waiting on hold for me, and the agent I spoke with walked me through the interstate benefits process. 7) Once you're in PA, make sure you're following their specific requirements for continued claims (job search activities, etc.) as they differ from NY. Good luck with your move!

•This is exactly what I needed, thank you so much! Going to check out that claimyr site now because I've wasted so much time on hold already.

•One more thing - make sure you do your weekly certifications in NY right up until your move date. Missing even one week can mess up your whole claim.

Bro the ny unemployment system is a joke. I had to move to Massachusetts last year and it took 3 MONTHS to get my benefits sorted out. Start applying for PA benefits now if you can.

•Same experience moving to NJ. The systems literally don't communicate at all. It's like we're living in 1985 not 2023.

just wondering why your moving if you dont have a job? PA benefits are lower than NY fyi

James Martinez
•Lower cost of living - my rent in NY is insane and I have family in PA I can stay with while I job hunt. Didn't realize benefits would be lower though, that sucks.

You NEED to call ny unemployment before you move and tell them. their system will flag your account when you try to certify from a different state IP address and they might suspend your benefits thinking its fraud. happened to me and it was a NIGHTMARE to fix.

•omg thank you for this! I would never have thought about the IP address thing. will definitely call before I leave.

•Pro tip: use claimyr.com to skip the hold times when calling. Saved me hours of frustration when I needed to update my address.

FYI - had a friend who just moved from NJ to PA and he was able to keep collecting his NJ benefits after moving. If the states have a reciprocal agreement, you might be ok to keep your NY benefits. Call and check!!

•This is partially true - it's called interstate benefits but it has specific requirements like being able to take a job in the original state. Depends how far into PA they're moving.

I went through this nightmare last yr. Make SURE you talk to someone at ny unemployment about this because if you do it wrong they'll accuse you of fraud and make you pay everything back. The PA unemployment site is actually worse than NY if you can believe it 🤮 Start learning it now lol

Best advice: if possible, use a NY address (friend or family) for mail and continue certifying until you find a job in PA. Is it 100% by the book? No. But the system is designed to fail you during transitions. Do what you need to do.

•This is terrible advice that could get OP in serious trouble. You have to be available for work in NY to collect NY benefits. What you're describing is fraud.

•the system commits fraud against us everyday but go off i guess 🙄

•Yeah no, don't do this. Interstate benefits exist legally. Fraud will cause more problems than it solves.

Quick! Call NY unemployment before you move! I've been through exactly this and you NEED to talk to them first. If you're struggling to get through on the phone, try the claimyr.com service - it got me connected to an agent in about 45 minutes when I'd been trying for days on my own. The agent explained all the interstate rules and what I needed to do. Saved me weeks of confusion.

•Thanks! Seems like a few people have recommended this service, I'm definitely going to try it before I move.
