Is unemployment considered government assistance for background checks?

I'm applying for jobs that require background checks and some of the forms ask about receiving government assistance. I've been getting unemployment benefits from NYS Department of Labor for the past 8 weeks while job searching. Do I need to report this as government assistance? I'm worried it might hurt my chances if employers see this. Has anyone dealt with this situation before?

Unemployment insurance isn't typically considered government assistance in the traditional sense. You paid into the UI system through payroll taxes while you were working, so it's more like insurance benefits you earned. Most background check forms are asking about things like SNAP, Medicaid, or housing assistance.

That makes sense! I did pay into it through my paychecks. Thanks for clarifying the difference.

You're overthinking this. Unemployment benefits are insurance payments, not welfare. The NYS Department of Labor administers an insurance program that you contributed to while working. Employers understand that people collect unemployment between jobs - it's normal and expected.

But what if they specifically ask about any government benefits? Should I mention it then or leave it off completely?

If they specifically ask about ALL government benefits including insurance, then yes mention it. But most forms distinguish between earned benefits like unemployment and need-based assistance programs.

I had this same worry when I was job hunting last year after my layoff. Called the NYS Department of Labor helpline but couldn't get through after waiting forever. Finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent who confirmed unemployment isn't what they mean by government assistance on those forms. There's even a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI. Saved me a lot of stress about the whole background check thing.

That's really helpful! I've been trying to call NYS Department of Labor myself but keep getting the busy signal. How much did that service cost?

It was totally worth it to get a real answer instead of guessing. Much better than spending hours on hold.

honestly this whole system is so confusing they should just be clearer about what they're asking for instead of making us guess
