How to get an unemployment insurance number from NYS Department of Labor?
I just lost my job last week and need to file for unemployment benefits but I'm completely lost on where to start. Everyone keeps mentioning something about needing an unemployment insurance number but I have no idea what that is or how to get one. Is this something I get when I first apply or do I need to get it before I can even start the application process? I've been looking at the my.ny.gov website but it's really confusing and I don't want to mess anything up. Any help would be appreciated!

The unemployment insurance number (UI number) is actually assigned to you automatically when you file your initial claim with NYS Department of Labor. You don't need to get it separately beforehand. When you complete your application on my.ny.gov, they'll generate this number for you and it will appear in your account dashboard. This number is basically your claim identifier that you'll use for all future weekly certifications and correspondence.

•Oh that makes so much more sense! So I just need to start the application process and they'll give me the number during that?

Yeah you just apply online at my.ny.gov and they give you the number right away. Make sure you have your social security card and driver's license ready when you apply. Also your last employer's info.

I remember being confused about this too when I first applied! The UI number shows up in your my.ny.gov account once your initial claim is processed. It's usually available within a few hours of submitting your application. You'll need this number every time you file your weekly claims, so make sure to write it down somewhere safe. Also heads up - the system can be slow during peak times so be patient if it takes a while to load.

•How long does the whole application process usually take? I'm worried about missing any deadlines.

Been dealing with NYS Department of Labor for months now and honestly their whole system is a nightmare. Yes you get the UI number when you apply but good luck actually getting through to anyone if you have problems. The phone lines are always busy and the online chat is useless. Just be prepared for a lot of frustration.

•I had trouble reaching them too until someone recommended trying Claimyr. It's a service that helps you get through to NYS Department of Labor agents by phone - check out claimyr.com. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

just to add - make sure you apply as soon as possible after losing your job. there's usually a waiting period before benefits start and you want to get that clock ticking. the UI number is just the beginning of the process.

I went through this same process about 6 months ago and can confirm what others have said - the UI number gets assigned automatically when you submit your initial claim on my.ny.gov. One thing I'd add is to make sure you have all your employment history for the past 18 months ready, including exact dates and employer addresses. The system will ask for detailed info about your previous jobs. Also, once you get your UI number, you'll need to certify for benefits every week - don't forget to do this or you could lose your benefits! The certification usually opens up on Sunday for the previous week.

•This is really helpful Emma! I had no idea about the weekly certification requirement. So once I get my UI number, I need to log back in every week to certify? What happens if I miss a week - is there any way to make it up or do I just lose that week's benefits completely?
