How to cancel unemployment application with NYS Department of Labor before approval?

I submitted my unemployment application through my.ny.gov last week but my situation changed and I found a new job. I want to cancel my unemployment application with NYS Department of Labor before it gets processed since I won't need benefits anymore. I can't find anywhere on the website that shows how to withdraw or cancel an application that's still pending. Has anyone done this before? I'm worried if I don't cancel it properly it might cause issues later.

You can't technically 'cancel' an unemployment application once it's submitted to NYS Department of Labor, but you can call them to request withdrawal before any payments are made. The number is on your my.ny.gov account under contact information. Make sure you get confirmation that it's been withdrawn properly.

Thanks! Do you know if there's any penalty for withdrawing it? I'm worried it might affect my ability to file in the future if I need to.

I did this same thing last year. Called NYS Department of Labor and told them I found work and wanted to withdraw my claim. They marked it as withdrawn and I never had any issues. Just make sure you keep a record of when you called and who you spoke with.

How long did it take to get through to someone? I've been trying to call for days about my claim.

It took me about 45 minutes of calling back repeatedly. Early morning seems to work better.

Actually, if you haven't certified for any weeks yet and no money has been paid, you might be able to just stop the process by not filing weekly claims. But calling is probably safer to make sure it's properly closed.

I wouldn't risk just ignoring it. NYS Department of Labor might keep your claim active and expect you to file weekly certifications. Better to officially withdraw it.

ugh good luck getting through to anyone at NYS Department of Labor on the phone... I've been trying for weeks about my claim status and can never get past the automated system

Have you tried using Claimyr? It's a service that helps you get through to NYS Department of Labor agents. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. I used them when I couldn't get through the regular way.

Never heard of that but will definitely check it out, thanks!

Congrats on finding a job! Just want to add that if you do get through to NYS Department of Labor, ask them to email you confirmation that your claim has been withdrawn. Sometimes there can be confusion later if there's no paper trail.

I was in a similar situation a few months ago. I called the NYS Department of Labor directly and explained that I found employment and wanted to withdraw my pending application. The representative was actually very helpful and processed the withdrawal immediately. They gave me a confirmation number and told me the claim was officially closed. The whole call took about 10 minutes once I got through. I'd recommend calling first thing in the morning around 8 AM - that's when I had the best luck getting through without waiting too long. Good luck with your new job!

That's really helpful to know! Did you have to provide any specific information when you called to withdraw it, like your confirmation number from when you originally applied? I'm preparing to make the call myself and want to have everything ready.

0 coins

@Peyton Clarke Yes, you ll'want to have your Social Security number and the confirmation number from your original application ready. They might also ask for your full name and address to verify your identity. I d'also suggest having the date you submitted your application handy - it helps them locate your claim faster in their system. The rep I spoke to was able to pull everything up pretty quickly once I provided those basic details.

I went through this exact same thing about 6 months ago! I had submitted my unemployment application and then got a job offer the next week. I was really worried about leaving it hanging out there too. I called the NYS Department of Labor customer service line (you can find it in your my.ny.gov account) and explained the situation. The agent was super understanding and withdrew my application on the spot - took maybe 5 minutes once I got through. They gave me a reference number for the withdrawal which I wrote down just in case. No penalties or anything, and it hasn't affected my ability to use the system. The hardest part was actually getting through on the phone - I had to call multiple times but eventually got someone. Definitely worth doing it properly rather than just ignoring it. Congrats on the new job!

That's so reassuring to hear! I was really stressed about this but it sounds like the process is pretty straightforward once you get through to someone. Getting that reference number for the withdrawal is a great tip - I'll definitely ask for that when I call. Thanks for sharing your experience and the congrats on the job!

I just went through this same process last month! I submitted my unemployment application and then got hired unexpectedly. I called the NYS Department of Labor and they were able to withdraw my application before any payments were made. The key is to call as soon as possible - they told me it's much easier to withdraw before they start processing weekly certifications. I called around 8:30 AM on a Tuesday and got through after about 20 minutes of redials. Have your SSN and application confirmation ready. The representative was really helpful and gave me a withdrawal confirmation number. No issues whatsoever and it won't affect future applications if you ever need to file again. Definitely call rather than just ignoring it - they appreciate the heads up and it keeps everything clean in their system. Good luck with your new position!

This is exactly what I needed to hear! I'm in the same boat - just got hired after submitting my application a few days ago. Really appreciate you mentioning the timing about calling before they start processing weekly certifications, that makes total sense. I'll definitely call first thing tomorrow morning with all my info ready. It's such a relief to know this won't create any problems down the line if I ever need to file again in the future. Thanks for the detailed breakdown of your experience!

I had a very similar experience earlier this year! Applied for unemployment benefits and then landed a job within days. I was panicked about how to handle it properly. I called the NYS Department of Labor phone number that's listed in your my.ny.gov account dashboard. It took several attempts to get through (I called around 8 AM on a Wednesday), but once I reached an agent, they were incredibly helpful. I explained that I found employment and wanted to officially withdraw my pending claim. The whole process took less than 10 minutes - they asked for my SSN, full name, and the date I originally applied. They immediately marked my claim as withdrawn and provided me with a confirmation number, which I highly recommend writing down and keeping for your records. The agent assured me this wouldn't impact any future unemployment applications if I ever needed to file again. No penalties or fees involved. The key is definitely calling sooner rather than later, especially before you're supposed to start filing weekly certifications. Better to be proactive and get it properly closed out rather than risk any complications. Congratulations on your new job - what a great problem to have!

This is such helpful advice! I'm actually dealing with this exact situation right now - just submitted my application last Friday and got a job offer yesterday. I was so worried about how to handle it properly without messing anything up. Your step-by-step breakdown is really reassuring, especially knowing that getting the confirmation number is important and that it won't affect future applications. I'm definitely going to call first thing tomorrow morning with all my info ready. It's amazing how quickly things can change - one day you're filing for unemployment and the next you're trying to figure out how to withdraw it because you found work! Thanks for sharing your experience so thoroughly, it really helps to know what to expect when I make that call.

I went through this exact same situation about two months ago! I had submitted my unemployment application through my.ny.gov and then unexpectedly got a job offer three days later. I was really anxious about how to handle it properly without creating any future complications. I called the NYS Department of Labor customer service line (the number is available in your my.ny.gov account under contact info) first thing on a Thursday morning around 8:15 AM. It took me about 15 tries to get through, but persistence paid off! Once I connected with an agent, they were extremely helpful and understanding. I explained that I had found employment and wanted to withdraw my pending claim before any processing began. The representative asked for my Social Security number, full name, date of birth, and the date I originally submitted my application. Within about 8 minutes, they had officially withdrawn my claim and provided me with a confirmation number, which I immediately wrote down and saved. They also confirmed via email later that day that my claim was closed. The agent reassured me that this withdrawal wouldn't negatively impact any future unemployment applications if I ever needed to file again, and there were absolutely no penalties involved. The key is definitely calling as soon as possible before they start processing weekly certifications or any payments. Don't just ignore it - taking the proactive approach to officially withdraw it keeps everything clean in their system and gives you peace of mind. Congratulations on your new job - such a wonderful outcome!

Wow, this is incredibly detailed and exactly what I needed to read! I'm literally in this exact situation right now - submitted my application on Monday and just got a call back for a job interview that went really well. Your experience gives me so much confidence about handling this properly. I love that you mentioned getting both the confirmation number AND the email confirmation - that's smart to have multiple records. The timing advice about calling early morning and being persistent with the redials is super practical too. It's such a relief to know that doing this the right way actually protects you for the future rather than creating problems. Thanks for taking the time to share such a comprehensive breakdown of your experience - it's going to make my call tomorrow so much easier!

I actually just dealt with this last week! I submitted my unemployment application on a Tuesday and then got hired on Friday. I was super worried about leaving it hanging there too. I called the NYS Department of Labor number from my my.ny.gov account and got through after about 30 minutes of trying (called around 8:45 AM on Monday). The agent was really professional and handled it quickly - asked for my SSN, name, and application date, then withdrew it immediately. They gave me a confirmation number and said it was completely closed out with no issues for future filings. The whole conversation took maybe 7 minutes once connected. Definitely call rather than just hoping it goes away - they actually appreciate when people are proactive about withdrawing claims they don't need. It gives them one less case to process! Best of luck with your new position!

That's so helpful to know it can be handled that quickly! I'm in a similar spot - just submitted my application a few days ago and have a promising job lead developing. It's really reassuring to hear that they actually appreciate when people are proactive about withdrawing claims they don't need. I was worried they might be annoyed, but it makes total sense that it saves them processing time. The 30 minutes of calling doesn't sound too bad compared to some of the other experiences people have shared. Thanks for the encouragement about the new position - fingers crossed everything works out as smoothly as it did for you!

I just went through this exact process two weeks ago! Applied for unemployment on a Monday, got a job offer on Wednesday, and called NYS Department of Labor on Thursday morning. Here's what worked for me: I called the customer service number from my my.ny.gov account at exactly 8:00 AM and got through after about 12 attempts (kept hitting redial). The agent was super helpful - they asked for my SSN, full name, and the date I submitted my application. Within 5 minutes, they had withdrawn my claim and gave me a confirmation number which I wrote down immediately. They also sent me an email confirmation later that afternoon. The agent assured me there would be no penalties and it wouldn't affect future unemployment applications if needed. The key is definitely calling ASAP before they start processing your weekly certifications. Don't just ignore it - officially withdrawing it is the right way to handle it and actually helps them too since they have one less claim to process. Congrats on finding work so quickly!

This is such great timing to read your experience! I literally just submitted my application this morning and already have a phone interview scheduled for tomorrow that could lead to an offer. Your step-by-step approach with calling at exactly 8 AM and having all the info ready sounds perfect. It's really reassuring to know you got both a confirmation number AND an email - that double confirmation gives me confidence this can be handled cleanly. The fact that it only took 5 minutes once you got through is amazing. I'm definitely going to follow your approach if my interview goes well. Thanks for sharing such recent and detailed experience!

I just successfully withdrew my unemployment application last Friday! I was in the exact same situation - submitted my application and then got hired within a week. I called the NYS Department of Labor number from my my.ny.gov account at 8:10 AM on a Friday morning. It took about 25 attempts to get through (just kept redialing), but once I connected with an agent, the process was incredibly smooth. They asked for my Social Security number, full name, and the date I originally applied. The representative was very understanding and immediately processed the withdrawal - took less than 6 minutes total. They provided me with a confirmation number and assured me that withdrawing wouldn't create any issues for future applications if I ever need to file again. I also received an email confirmation later that day which was great for my records. The agent actually thanked me for calling to withdraw it properly rather than just abandoning the claim, saying it helps them manage their system better. My advice: call as early as possible (8 AM seems to be the sweet spot), have all your information ready, and be persistent with the redialing. Don't stress about it - they handle these withdrawal requests regularly and it's a very straightforward process. Congratulations on your new job!

I went through this same situation about 3 weeks ago! I had submitted my unemployment application and then landed a job offer just 4 days later. I was really stressed about how to handle it properly without creating any future complications. I called the NYS Department of Labor customer service line (found the number in my my.ny.gov account) at 8:05 AM on a Tuesday morning. It took me about 18 attempts to get through, but I just kept hitting redial and eventually connected with an agent. Once I got through, the process was surprisingly quick and easy! The representative was very professional and understanding. They asked for my Social Security number, full name, date of birth, and the date I originally submitted my application. Within about 7 minutes, they had officially withdrawn my claim from their system and provided me with a confirmation number. I made sure to write that number down immediately and keep it in my records. They also assured me that this withdrawal wouldn't negatively impact any future unemployment applications if I ever needed to file again, and there were no penalties whatsoever. The agent even sent me an email confirmation later that afternoon, which was great to have for documentation. The key is definitely calling as soon as possible before they begin processing weekly certifications or any payments. Don't just ignore the application - taking the proactive step to officially withdraw it keeps everything clean in their system and gives you complete peace of mind. The agents actually appreciate when people call to properly close claims they no longer need since it helps them manage their workload more efficiently. Good luck with your new job - what an awesome problem to have!

I just had this exact same experience last month! Filed my unemployment application on a Thursday, got a job offer the following Tuesday, and was panicking about how to handle it properly. I called the NYS Department of Labor number (it's in your my.ny.gov account under contact info) at 8:00 AM sharp on a Wednesday morning. Had to redial about 22 times but finally got through to an agent who was incredibly helpful. The whole withdrawal process took maybe 6 minutes - they just needed my SSN, full name, and application date. Got a confirmation number on the spot and an email later that day confirming the withdrawal. The agent told me this happens all the time and actually thanked me for calling instead of just abandoning the claim. No penalties at all, and they assured me it won't affect future applications if I ever need unemployment again. My advice: call first thing in the morning, have your info ready, and don't give up on the redialing - it's totally worth it to get this handled properly. Congrats on the new job, and don't stress about this - it's a routine process for them!
