Four strategies to overcome unemployment - need advice on NYS Department of Labor requirements
I've been unemployed for 6 weeks now and just started getting NYS Department of Labor benefits. My case worker mentioned I need to use multiple strategies to find work but didn't give me specifics. I know I have to do 3 job search activities per week but want to make sure I'm doing this right. What are the best four strategies you've used to overcome unemployment while staying compliant with NYS Department of Labor job search requirements? I'm in marketing and really don't want any issues with my weekly claims.

The four main strategies that worked for me and meet NYS Department of Labor requirements: 1) Active networking through LinkedIn and industry events (counts as job search activity), 2) Direct applications through company websites and job boards like Indeed (obviously counts), 3) Working with recruiters who specialize in your field (each contact counts), and 4) Skill development through free online courses while you search. Make sure you're logging everything in your job search record because NYS Department of Labor can audit this.

•Thanks! Do the online courses count toward the 3 weekly activities? I wasn't sure about that one.

I'll add to that list - temp agencies are huge for getting back to work faster. Register with 3-4 good ones and that counts as job search activities plus you might get temp-to-perm opportunities. Also don't sleep on government job sites like usajobs.gov and the state civil service site. Those applications take forever but the benefits are usually worth it.

•Yes! Temp work saved me when I was on UI. Just make sure you report any temp income on your weekly claim or you'll get hit with an overpayment later.

If you're having trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor to clarify the job search requirements, I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual person. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Was way easier than trying to call myself and getting disconnected constantly.

•Wait, you have to pay someone to call NYS Department of Labor for you? That seems weird...

•I know it sounds odd but when you can't get through for weeks and your claim is on hold, it's worth it. They got me connected in like 10 minutes when I'd been trying for days.

The networking thing is SO important. I got my current job through a former coworker who saw my LinkedIn post about being available. Sometimes it's not what you know but who you know. Just make sure you're still filing your weekly claims while you network because even if something looks promising, it might fall through.
