Break in claim message on NY unemployment Shared Work program - will I still get benefits Tuesday?

I'm on the NY unemployment Shared Work program and something weird happened when I filed today. The system told me I had a 'break in my claim' but I only worked 10 hours this week which is 0 days according to their rules. Will I still get my benefits on Tuesday like normal!?!? Or do I have to wait for them to send me some form before I can receive my benefits? Has anyone dealt with this 'break in claim' message before? I really need this money to come through on time!! Please helppp

I actually worked less hours last week (only 8) so that can't be it... ugh this is so stressful

This 'break in claim' message usually appears when the system detects something that doesn't match your normal certification pattern. For Shared Work specifically, there are a few causes: 1. Your employer may have submitted different hours than you certified 2. You might have answered one of the weekly questions differently than usual 3. There could be a quarterly review happening (we're at the start of a new quarter in 2025) Regarding payment: Unfortunately, when you get that message, payments are typically held until the issue is resolved. You likely won't receive payment on Tuesday as normal. However, you don't need to wait for a form - you should proactively call NYSDOL to clear this up. The sooner you address it, the faster your payment will process.

Thank you for explaining this! I think it might be the quarterly review thing since my employer hasn't changed my hours. Do you know how long the hold usually lasts?

The hold typically lasts until you speak with a claims specialist who can review and release the payment. In the best case, you could have it resolved in 1-2 business days after speaking with someone. If unaddressed, it could delay benefits for 1-3 weeks or more.

UGH THIS EXACT THING just happened to me last month on Shared Work!!! I got the same message about a break in claim and then NO MONEY came through for TWO WEEKS!!!! I called literally 47 times and couldn't get through to anyone. The auto system just kept telling me there was a hold for "eligibility review" or something. It was a NIGHTMARE!!!!

Oh no that sounds horrible!! Did you eventually get your money? Was there anything specific you did that fixed it?

Yeah I finally got it but only after I managed to talk to a real person. They said it was just a "routine quarterly review" but why do they have to stop our payments while they do their stupid reviews?? So frustrating!!!

Here's what's happening with your Shared Work claim: The NYSDOL system performs automatic quarterly reviews at the beginning of each calendar quarter (we're in Q1 2025 now). During these reviews, they verify your continued eligibility and sometimes place temporary holds on benefits. For Shared Work specifically, they're checking that: 1. Your employer is still in good standing with the program 2. Your reduced hours still qualify (between 20-60% reduction) 3. Your base wage information is still current You won't receive a form, but you DO need to speak with a claims specialist to lift the hold. The system won't automatically release your payment without human review in these cases. I'd recommend calling first thing tomorrow morning.

After trying to call the NYSDOL for three days straight during my similar shared work issue last month, I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got through to an agent in under 15 minutes. They immediately fixed my "break in claim" hold and released my payment. Saved me from being late on rent! They have a video that shows exactly how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE. So much better than spending hours hitting redial and getting nowhere.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'm going to try calling normally tomorrow morning first, but if I can't get through I might try that. I'm just worried about missing payments for weeks like some people mentioned.

When I had this problem with my Shared Work claim last year, it was because I accidentally entered my hours wrong one week. I said I worked 16 hours when I actually worked 14, and that triggered some kind of review. The annoying part was that my benefits were delayed for like 10 days while they sorted it out. Did you maybe enter something different this week compared to previous weeks? Sometimes even a small change can trigger these holds.

I don't think I entered anything differently, but maybe I did without realizing it? This whole system is so confusing and stressful.

Quick update on the Shared Work break in claim issue: Just to clarify something I'm seeing in other comments - the 10 hours you worked does NOT equal "0 days" in the NYSDOL system. Even under Shared Work, they count partial days. For Shared Work in 2025, here's how they calculate days worked: - Less than 4 hours = 0 days - 4 hours = 1/2 day - More than 4 hours = 1 full day So your 10 hours likely counted as at least 1 day, possibly 2 days depending on how they were distributed. If you reported differently, this could be causing the break in claim message.

Oh! That might be the issue then. I thought under 4 hours = 0 days, but I didn't realize that was per day not per week. I worked 5 hours on Monday and 5 hours on Wednesday, so that would be 2 full days according to what you're saying. But I think I might have reported it differently. Could that cause the break in claim message?

Yes, that's exactly what could cause it! You worked two days at 5 hours each, which equals 2 full days in their system. If you reported fewer days, the system flagged the discrepancy. When you speak with a representative, explain this misunderstanding and they should be able to correct it quickly.

It sounds like calling is definitely what I need to do. Thanks for confirming!

Based on all the responses here, it looks like you have two likely issues: 1. The quarterly review that automatically happens at the start of Q1 2025 2. A potential miscalculation in how you reported your days worked (10 hours across multiple days = 2 days, not 0) Either way, the solution is the same - you need to speak with a NYSDOL representative as soon as possible. When you call, be sure to: 1. Explain you're on the Shared Work program 2. Tell them exactly how your hours were distributed (5 hours Monday, 5 hours Wednesday) 3. Ask them to expedite the release of your payment due to financial hardship if applicable Once resolved, your payment will typically process within 1-2 business days.

Thank you so much for this detailed explanation. I'll make sure to have all this information ready when I call tomorrow. Hopefully I can get through to someone quickly!

Yes! I finally got through to NYSDOL this morning. It turned out I had misreported my days worked (counted hours instead of days). They fixed it right away and said my payment should come through by Friday. What a relief!

Honestly it was a nightmare - I called for 3 hours straight yesterday with no luck. Today I started calling right when they opened at 8am and finally got through after about 45 minutes. Definitely call early if you can!
