Anyone else filed an unemployment insurance claim during the last 12 months? Looking for recent experiences

Hey everyone, I'm trying to get a sense of what the NYS Department of Labor process has been like recently. Have you filed an unemployment insurance claim during the last 12 months? I'm considering filing myself after my position got eliminated last week, but I'm hearing mixed things about wait times and adjudication delays. Would really appreciate hearing about recent experiences - how long did your claim take to process? Any issues with the weekly certification process? Just want to know what I'm getting into before I start the application.

Filed in March 2024 and it took about 3 weeks to get approved. The initial application was straightforward on the my.ny.gov portal, but I had to call twice to check on my status during adjudication. Make sure you have all your employment history ready - they need exact dates and employer info for the last 18 months.

Thanks! Did you have any issues with the job search requirements? I heard they changed some of the rules recently.

yeah filed last summer when my company downsized... took FOREVER to get through to anyone at NYS Department of Labor. kept getting the busy signal or just hung up on. finally got approved but it was like 5 weeks of stress

That's frustrating but unfortunately pretty typical. The phone system is overwhelmed most days. If you need to reach someone urgently, I've had good luck with Claimyr - it's a service that helps you get through to NYS Department of Labor agents. Check out claimyr.com and they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

I filed in October and honestly it was smoother than I expected?? Got my first payment in about 2 weeks. The weekly claims are easy once you get the hang of it. Just make sure you certify every week even if you're waiting for adjudication - that was the mistake I almost made.

Good to know! Were you on regular UI or did you qualify for any extensions?

Just regular unemployment insurance. I think the extensions are mostly gone now unless you have special circumstances.

Filed twice in the past year unfortunately - once in February 2024 and again in November when I got laid off AGAIN. Second time was definitely faster, maybe because I was already in their system? Both times had to do the job search log which is annoying but not too bad if you stay on top of it.

Sorry to hear about the double layoffs - that's rough. How many job contacts do you need to log per week?

The whole system is a mess if you ask me. Filed in June and they flagged my claim for some random reason, took 8 weeks to sort out. No explanation, just 'additional review required.' Meanwhile bills don't stop coming...
