For most people it's about 2-3 weeks total if there are no complications. Week 1 is filing and waiting for determination, Week 2 is your unpaid waiting week where you still need to certify weekly, Week 3 is when you should see your first payment if everything is approved. The important thing is to keep certifying every week even if you haven't been paid yet, and make sure you're doing your job search requirements from day one.
dont forget about people who get fired for stealing or fighting or showing up drunk. thats misconduct and disqualifies you completely. also if you quit to move somewhere else without having a job lined up first
Thanks everyone. Sounds like my issue is probably the base period since I only started working in March. Going to try filing for the alternate base period and see what happens. Wish they made this stuff clearer from the start!
Your neighbor sounds like one of those people who complains about everything without understanding how it actually works. Don't let her make you feel bad about collecting benefits you earned!
omg this reminds me of when my aunt tried to tell me the same thing! She was like 'you're taking money from hardworking people' and I was like no aunt susan thats not how this works lol. some people just dont understand the system
just so you know disaster unemployment usually requires federal declaration of disaster in your area. not every flood or storm qualifies unfortunately
The timing matters too - you usually have to apply within a certain timeframe after the disaster declaration. Don't wait too long to file your application with NYS Department of Labor. The disaster assistance program has stricter deadlines than regular unemployment.

Whatever you do, make sure you answer all the questions honestly about why you lost your job. If there's any discrepancy between what you say and what your employer reports, your claim could go into adjudication which can delay everything for weeks. I learned this the hard way!

Also make sure you're actively looking for work and keeping track of your job search activities. NYS Department of Labor requires you to search for work and they might ask for documentation of your job search efforts.

•How many jobs do I need to apply for each week? I want to make sure I meet the requirements.

•The requirement is that you make a reasonable effort to find work. Keep records of where you apply, when, and any responses you get. There's no specific number but 3-4 applications per week is generally considered adequate.
