omg this is giving me flashbacks to when I filed 3 years ago... the stress of not knowing if you'll get approved is the worst part. at least now you can do everything online instead of having to mail forms
Here's what nobody tells you - even after you're approved, payments can still get held up for random verification requests. NYS Department of Labor might ask you to prove your identity, verify your work history, or confirm your job search activities. Always respond immediately to any requests or your benefits will be suspended. Also, keep in mind that unemployment benefits are taxable income, so you can choose to have taxes withheld or pay them later when you file your tax return. The maximum weekly benefit amount in New York is currently $504, but most people get less depending on their previous wages.
THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS A JOKE!!! They make you jump through hoops for benefits you already paid into through taxes. Three job searches a week but half the jobs posted are fake or already filled. And don't even get me started on how long adjudication takes when they decide to "investigate" your claim for no reason.
If you accidentally don't report income, contact the NYS Department of Labor immediately to correct it. Small oversights can usually be fixed without penalties if you're proactive about it. The key is being honest and transparent with all your reporting. Also remember you have appeal rights if any decisions don't seem correct.
If you're having trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor by phone, I had success using a service called Claimyr at claimyr.com. They have this system that helps you actually reach a human agent instead of getting stuck in the phone queue. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling and redialing.
THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS A JOKE! I've been waiting 2 months for my adjudication to clear and they keep saying someone will call me back. Meanwhile I can't pay my rent because my claim is stuck in limbo. They need to hire more people instead of making us wait forever.
I had a similar situation last year where I couldn't get through to NYS Department of Labor to check on my claim status after being terminated. The phone lines were always busy and I was getting really anxious about the whole process. A friend told me about this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me actually reach a real person at NYS Department of Labor. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Really took the stress out of trying to get answers about my adjudication process.
wait so if you get fired you can still get unemployment? i thought only people who got laid off could get it

If you're having trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor to ask about any of their determinations, I had success using a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me reach an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. I was stuck trying to call for weeks about my adjudication status and this got me through to someone who could explain everything in about 15 minutes.

•How much does something like that cost? I've been trying to call NYS Department of Labor for days about my own determination letter.

•It's worth checking out their site for details, but honestly after spending hours on hold getting nowhere, any reasonable cost was worth it to actually talk to someone who could help.

the whole system is so confusing with all these technical terms. i wish they would just say 'congratulations your claim is approved' instead of 'qualifying separation determination' lol
