Each Taxpayer Assistance Center (TAC) is a resource open to the public (as long as you have an appointment!). There is likely an office near you with 330 IRS local offices across America. Every IRS office is staffed with professional IRS agents who are fully trained to expedite IRS tax issues. Almost all IRS tax issues can be addressed at your local IRS office. While they won’t do tax preparation, they can answer many tax-related questions. Take advantage of the following services at your local Taxpayer Assistance Center as an individual or business owner.

One of two things happens next. You may be placed on hold to speak to a live IRS agent. Wait on hold until a live agent picks up. They will ask you a series of questions to understand your tax issue. They may tell you the answer to your tax problem or where to find more information.
The IRS doesn’t want you to go through all the trouble of going to a Taxpayer Assistance Center if your tax problem can be solved prior. If the IRS phone agent determines that you need to see someone in person, they will help set up your appointment at the closest local IRS office. You’ll then provide the IRS agent with your email to receive your appointment confirmation.

What to bring to your Taxpayer Assistance Center appointment
With a confirmed appointment at your local IRS office, you'll want to gather the following documents. Like any public institution, IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers will start by verifying your identity.
IRS accepted forms of identity verification documents
- 👉 A valid passport, driver's license, or other government-issued photo ID document
- 👉 Bring your Social Security card if you have one.
- 👉 Not a bad idea to bring a birth certificate if you're having an identity theft issue
Of course, you need to bring supporting documentation that pertains to your actual tax issue. The critical thing to remember here is that more documentation will help an IRS representative get the best tax issue resolution possible.
