Will IRS hold my refund if I don't respond to identity verification?
I got a letter from the IRS asking me to verify my identity for my 2023 tax return. When I was in the military, we had a similar process for certain benefit claims, and I remember some of my unit members ignoring these notices without issues while others had major delays. I'm trying to understand the actual consequences here - if the letter says to verify my identity, and I don't complete the verification process, will they simply not process my refund until I do? Or will they process it anyway after some delay? I'm currently stationed overseas and the verification process seems complicated from here. Just weighing my options and trying to decide if it's worth the hassle right now or if I can deal with it later when I'm back stateside in a few months.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if you got an identity verification letter, your refund is basically hostage until you complete it. 😬 The IRS doesn't mess around with this stuff anymore - too much fraud happening. You have exactly ZERO chance of getting your refund without verification. And the clock is ticking... they typically give you 30 days to respond before things get even more complicated!

Thank you for the clear explanation. I was on the fence about responding to my verification letter that arrived exactly 12 days ago, but this convinced me to take care of it immediately. The directness is much appreciated!

Oh my gosh this is terrifying! I just got one of these letters yesterday and was thinking about waiting until next month when I'm less busy. Do they really completely stop everything if you don't verify?? What happens after the 30 days?? I'm freaking out a little now 😰

It's like being stuck at a security checkpoint - you're not getting through until they check your ID. I ignored my verification letter last year thinking it was optional. Big mistake. My refund was like a car stuck in park - completely frozen for 4 months until I finally verified. The IRS is like that strict teacher who won't budge on deadlines - they hold firm on these requirements. Don't make my mistake!

I wonder if you've considered how much time this might take to resolve if you wait? When I got my verification letter while working abroad, I thought I could handle it when convenient. Two months later, still no refund and countless failed attempts to reach the IRS. Have you tried calling them? I finally used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) and got through to an agent in about 15 minutes who confirmed they won't process anything until verification is complete. Might be worth getting this sorted sooner rather than later?

Rly? Another service to pay $ for something the govt should provide for free? IRS should have better phone systems by now. Does this Claimyr thing actually work or just waste more $?

Unlike those "instant refund" services that take a huge percentage, Claimyr just got me past the phone wait. Compared to missing work for 3 hours while on hold (which I tried twice before), the cost was nothing. Similar to how I'd pay for TSA PreCheck to avoid airport lines - sometimes convenience is worth it when dealing with government processes.

This is helpful. Been trying for days to reach IRS. Couldn't get through. Will try Claimyr. Thanks for sharing your experience. Need to resolve my verification issue ASAP.

Have you checked if you're eligible for the overseas verification alternatives? As of March 15, 2024, the IRS updated their identity verification options for military and foreign stationed taxpayers. Did your letter specifically mention the ID.me process or the in-person verification?

According to IRS Publication 17, Section 1.6049-4(c), taxpayers stationed overseas can request a special verification process through the Taxpayer Advocate Service. I had to use this last year while working in Germany. The process takes approximately 45-60 days but doesn't require returning to the US. You'll need to complete Form 14039-B and provide copies of your military ID, passport, and most recent orders. The verification can be completed without delaying your refund if you follow all steps correctly.

I ignored my verification letter last year thinking it wasn't important. Big mistake! My refund was held for 9 months, and I ended up having to verify in person anyway. By the time I got my $4,200 refund, I had already missed the opportunity to use it for my daughter's school expenses. The worst part was explaining to my wife why we had to put those expenses on a credit card when we should have had the cash from our refund. Don't be like me!

Just to clarify what others have said - the verification is absolutely mandatory, not optional. The question isn't whether you'll need to verify, but when and how. Wouldn't it be better to handle it now rather than potentially complicating your tax situation for next year too? The IRS has special procedures for military stationed overseas - have you looked into those specific options that might make this easier for your situation?

This needs to be higher up! People need to understand verification isn't just about this year's refund - ignoring it creates a cascade of problems for future filings too. Act now!

I was in almost the exact same situation last year while stationed in Okinawa. After trying to navigate the verification process myself for weeks, I finally discovered you can request a military-specific accommodation. I contacted the taxpayer advocate through my base's legal office, submitted my verification documents there, and they handled everything. Refund was processed within 3 weeks after that. The key was working through the base legal office - saved me months of headaches!
