Why Is My $316 Tax Refund Frozen With Code 810 Dated Before Filing? ($18,918 AGI Single Filer With Self-Employment Tax)
I filed my taxes and got my transcript but I'm seeing a refund freeze code 810 from 02-07-2023. I'm really worried about what this means and when I'll get my refund. Looking at my transcript dated 03-17-2023, my transcript number is 104170840946. The transcript shows ANY MINUS SIGN SHOWN BELOW SIGNIFIES A CREDIT AMOUNT. My ACCOUNT BALANCE shows $1,977.00 with ACCRUED INTEREST of $0.00 AS OF: Apr. 03, 2023, and ACCRUED PENALTY of $0.00 AS OF: Apr. 03, 2023. The ACCOUNT BALANCE PLUS ACCRUALS (this is not a payoff amount) is $1,977.00. Under INFORMATION FROM THE RETURN OR AS ADJUSTED, it shows: EXEMPTIONS: 01 FILING STATUS: Single ADJUSTED GROSS INCOME: $18,918.00 TAXABLE INCOME: $4,774.00 TAX PER RETURN: $2,293.00 SE TAXABLE INCOME TAXPAYER: $11,865.00 SE TAXABLE INCOME SPOUSE: $0.00 TOTAL SELF EMPLOYMENT TAX: $1,815.00 My RETURN DUE DATE OR RETURN RECEIVED DATE (WHICHEVER IS LATER) is Apr. 15, 2023, and the PROCESSING DATE is Apr. 03, 2023. In the TRANSACTIONS section, I see: CODE 150 Tax return filed - CYCLE 20231105 DATE 04-03-2023 AMOUNT $2,293.00 70211-431-81461-3 CODE 806 W-2 or 1099 withholding - DATE 04-15-2023 AMOUNT -$316.00 CODE 810 Refund freeze - DATE 02-07-2023 AMOUNT $0.00 CODE 971 Notice issued - DATE 04-03-2023 AMOUNT $0.00 This Product Contains Sensitive Taxpayer Data I'm confused because the refund freeze code 810 is dated 02-07-2023, which is before I even filed my taxes. My withholding is only $316.00 from W-2/1099 (code 806), and with my self-employment tax of $1,815.00 on SE income of $11,865.00, I'm not sure what's happening. Does anyone know what this freeze code means and when I might get my refund? I'm especially confused about why there's a freeze date before my processing date, and what the 971 code for "Notice issued" means. Should I be expecting something in the mail?

The transcript shows you have a total tax liability of $2,293, which breaks down into regular income tax plus $1,815 in self-employment tax from your SE income of $11,865. Your withholdings (code 806) were only $316, resulting in a balance due of $1,977. This explains the code 810 refund freeze from February 7th - it's not actually a refund delay, but rather indicates you owe taxes instead of receiving a refund. Looking at your income details, you had an adjusted gross income of $18,918 with taxable income of $4,774 after deductions. The processing cycle code 20231105 shows your return was processed on April 3rd, 2023. The code 971 from the same date indicates the IRS sent you a notice, likely regarding the balance due. Since there are no penalties or interest accrued as of April 3rd, you'll want to set up a payment arrangement with the IRS soon to handle the $1,977 balance due before penalties begin to apply. The fact that your tax return was processed just before the filing deadline (April 15th, 2023) gives you a good window to arrange payment.

Yes, unfortunately. The self-employment tax hit you pretty hard. Next year consider making quarterly estimated payments to avoid this situation.

You should try using taxr.ai - it analyzes your transcript and explains everything in plain english. I was confused about my codes too but it broke everything down and even told me exactly what I needed to do next. Its only $1 and totally worth it. https://taxr.ai

Your withholding was way too low for your income. The SE tax alone was $1,815 but you only had $316 withheld all year? Thats gonna be a problem fam 👀
