Which Transcript Shows Processing Status? Mine Says 'Verification of Non-Filing'

I feel like I'm trying to find a needle in a haystack with these IRS transcripts. I logged into my account and my return transcript says "verification of non filing letter"? It's like being told the book I just returned to the library doesn't exist. I KNOW I filed - did it electronically back in February. I deserve to know where my money is and what's happening with my return. Can someone explain which transcript I should actually be looking at to see if my return is being processed? As a student, I'm counting on this refund and need to understand what's going on.

You need to look at your "Account Transcript" for tax year 2023, not the Return Transcript. The Account Transcript shows exactly 4 types of transactions: payments, adjustments, credits, and refund information. The Return Transcript won't show anything until your return is fully processed, which takes exactly 21 days for most electronic filers. Have you checked your Account Transcript yet? That's where you'll see codes like 150, 570, 971 that indicate processing status.

Wait, so there are different types of transcripts? How many are there total? And do I need to request each one separately? I'm trying to figure out my own situation too and this is more complicated than I expected.

I've been in this field for some time, and I believe I can shed some light on your situation. There are primarily four transcript types: Account, Return, Record of Account, and Wage & Income. The Account Transcript is generally what most people need when tracking refund status. In my experience with clients, seeing "verification of non-filing" on your Return Transcript typically means your return is still in the processing queue. It's not necessarily cause for concern, though I would recommend checking again in perhaps a week or so.

I had a somewhat similar issue last month and spent probably close to $30 in cell minutes trying to reach the IRS. After three days of trying, I finally used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) and got through to an agent in about 15 minutes. It might cost a little, but it saved me so much time and frustration. The agent explained exactly which transcript to look at and what was happening with my return. For me, it was definitely worth the money to get answers right away rather than waiting weeks for a letter.

Is this service really necessary though? Couldn't you just keep calling the IRS yourself? The IRS does eventually answer calls, doesn't it? I wonder if services like this just capitalize on people's impatience rather than solving a real problem.

I appreciate the suggestion, but calling the IRS is like trying to drain the ocean with a teaspoon - theoretically possible but practically impossible. I tried for two weeks straight before giving in and using a service. It's like paying for a fast pass at an amusement park - sure, you could wait in the regular line for hours, but sometimes your time is worth more than the money saved.

This happens more often than you'd think. Instead of checking transcripts, I always use the Where's My Refund tool on the IRS website first. It's way more straightforward than trying to decode transcripts. It's like comparing a simple traffic light to reading engineering blueprints - one tells you stop/go, the other requires specialized knowledge. Have you tried WMR to see if it shows your return as received?

According to IRS Publication 5192, the Where's My Refund tool only shows limited status information. But does WMR update more frequently than the transcripts? I've heard transcripts update weekly whereas WMR can change daily. Is that accurate in your experience?

OMG I had EXACTLY this problem last month!!! I was freaking out seeing that "verification of non-filing" message too! 😱 I checked my Account Transcript (not Return Transcript) and it showed all my processing codes. Three days later my refund hit my bank account! Don't panic - your return is probably fine, just check the Account Transcript instead. I needed my refund for tuition and was so relieved when it finally came through!

One thing nobody's mentioned - if you filed recently, the IRS systems might still be catching up. The IRS moves at the speed of a three-toed sloth swimming through molasses, especially during tax season. 😅 Also worth checking: did you file under a different name (marriage/divorce situation) or address than what's in the IRS system? That can sometimes cause the system to not recognize your return immediately. I've seen cases where this triggered the non-filing message even though the return was in the system.

Last year I had this exact same issue. The return transcript showed "verification of non-filing" while my return was actually being processed. I called the IRS after trying for days (got lucky with the timing I guess) and they confirmed my return was in the system but just hadn't been fully processed yet. Two weeks later, everything updated correctly and I got my refund. The system isn't perfect, but usually things work out in the end. Just keep checking your Account Transcript every few days - that's where you'll see the changes first.
