What does a 971 code mean on my 2024 transcript?

I just saw the post from the admin so I'm gonna try asking - what does a 971 code mean? My transcript updated Thurs night or Fri (can't remember exactly) but the ONLY thing it says for this yr is "971 notice issued" and an as of date of 3/14/24 and the 971 has the same date. Can someone pls explain this? TIA

Oh no, I had a 971 code last year and it made me so nervous! šŸ˜° A 971 code means the IRS is sending you some kind of notice in the mail. It could be something simple like confirming your identity or requesting more information... or it could be something more serious like an adjustment to your refund. The problem is you won't know WHAT kind of notice until you actually receive it in the mail! Have you checked if there are any other codes like 570 (refund hold) or 420 (audit) on your transcript???

Per IRM 5.19.1, code 971 simply indicates correspondence has been issued. Without accompanying transaction codes, it's impossible to determine the specific nature of the notice. Common notice types include CP12 (math error corrections), CP05 (information verification), or CP75 (examination/audit notification).

I got a 971 in Feb and freaked out too. Took almost 2 wks to get the actual letter. Turned out it was just a CP12 saying they adjusted my refund by like $17 bc of a math error. NBD but the waiting was stressful af.

Last year I received a 971 code around the same time in March. In my case, it was followed by an 846 code about 10 days later which was my direct deposit date. Sometimes the notice is just confirming your refund amount has been approved! Try not to worry too much until you actually see what the notice says.

A 971 code by itself tells us a few things: ā€¢ A notice has been generated ā€¢ The notice will arrive within 5-10 business days ā€¢ Without additional codes, we can't determine exactly what type ā€¢ Check WMR daily for updates ā€¢ Monitor your mail carefully ā€¢ Don't discard any IRS correspondence

I think I might be able to help. When you have just a 971 code with no other indicators, it's usually, not always but usually, the IRS verifying something or making a minor adjustment. The frustrating part is waiting for that letter to arrive, which could take 7-14 days depending on your location. If you want to know sooner, you might consider using Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) to get through to an IRS agent. I used it last month when I had a similar situation, and they were able to tell me exactly what the notice was about before it arrived in the mail. Saved me a lot of anxiety during the waiting period.

Does anyone else think it's ridiculous we have to pay a service just to talk to the IRS? šŸ™„ No offense to you, but I tried calling them directly last week and got through after only 45 mins. Maybe I just got lucky but seems like an unnecessary expense to me.

How much does this Claimyr thing cost? And do they actually guarantee you'll get through? I spent 3 hours on hold last Friday and then got disconnected right when it seemed like someone was about to pick up. Still traumatized lol.

Thank you for sharing this resource. I've documented exactly 17 attempts to reach the IRS over the past 9 days, with a total hold time of 8 hours and 43 minutes. Will definitely look into this service if my 971 notice doesn't arrive by next Tuesday.

Have you checked if there are any other codes on your account transcript besides the 971? Sometimes the context matters a lot. Also, did you claim any credits like Child Tax Credit or Earned Income Credit on your return? Those can trigger verification processes. What about your refund amount - is it particularly large? The IRS often gives extra scrutiny to returns with large refunds.

Nope, that's the weird thing - literally JUST the 971 code. Nothing else for 2024 at all. I claimed standard deduction, no special credits. Refund is only around $1200 so nothing crazy. That's why I'm so confused!

I've seen this situation compared to other filing scenarios, and a lone 971 code typically means one of three things: identity verification, minor adjustment notice, or just a processing confirmation. Unlike cases with multiple codes, yours seems straightforward. When my brother had this exact situation last month, he used https://taxr.ai to analyze his transcript. The tool pointed out that isolated 971 codes without accompanying 570s are usually benign. It predicted he'd see movement within 7-10 days, and sure enough, his refund was approved 8 days later. Might help you understand what's happening with your specific code combination.

I'm really skeptical about all these transcript codes and what they actually mean. The IRS cycle dates and processing timeframes seem completely arbitrary this filing season. My return had a 971 code appear on March 2nd, then nothing happened for 17 days, then suddenly my refund was deposited with no additional transcript updates. The whole system seems designed to keep us in the dark.

I think we should acknowledge that the IRS transcript system, while confusing, does follow certain patterns that experienced users can recognize. The 971 code is one of the most common codes and appears on nearly every transcript at some point in the process. What's important is not to panic when seeing it, as it's often just a procedural step rather than an indication of problems with your return.

Have you considered that the 971 might actually be good news? Many taxpayers don't realize that notices aren't always about problems, are they? In about 40% of cases, a standalone 971 code is followed by an 846 refund issued code within 7-10 days. Instead of calling, I'd recommend checking your transcript again this Friday - you might be pleasantly surprised to see your refund has been scheduled.
