Weekly Transcript Updates - 'As of' Date Changed but Nothing Else?

Good morning tax fam!! Quick question, does the transcripts update all day today if you're a weekly? I verified in person last Friday and the only thing that updated this morning was my "as of" date to 4/22 which had been 3/15 since I filed so I guess it's some movement. TIA for any info!! Just trying to get my amended return processed ASAP ๐Ÿ™

Yep, transcripts can definitely update throughout the day! The IRS systems don't just refresh at midnight and call it a day, lol. That "as of" date change is actually a good sign - means your account is actively being worked on. The Friday-Saturday cycle is when most weekly updates happen, but I've personally seen my transcript change on random Tuesday afternoons too. Just keep checking every few hours today. ๐Ÿ˜‰

So what's the typical timeline after seeing an "as of" date change? Will it be another week before seeing actual updates like refund amounts or processing codes?

I've noticed that amended returns seem to follow a different pattern compared to regular returns. When I amended last year, my "as of" date changed three times before I saw any actual transcript updates. Took about 14 days from the first "as of" date change to see real movement.

This is accurate based on my experience with the IRS systems: โ€ข "As of" date changes indicate account review โ€ข Updates can occur at any time during business hours โ€ข Most significant updates happen Friday-Saturday โ€ข Amended returns typically take 8-12 weeks for full processing โ€ข In-person verification usually expedites by 1-2 weeks

I'm somewhat skeptical about the significance of the "as of" date change by itself. In my experience, it sometimes means they're actively processing your return, but it could also just be an automated system update. I've had my "as of" date change multiple times with no actual progress for weeks. Might be worth checking again tomorrow morning, just to see if anything else updates overnight.

The "as of" date modification is actually quite significant in your case. This date represents when your account information is current as of, and a change typically indicates your return has moved to the next phase in the Master File processing sequence. With in-person verification completed last Friday, your return has likely been released from the Verification Hold Queue (VHQ) and is now in active processing. For amended returns specifically, expect approximately 7-10 days between this initial "as of" date change and the appearance of transaction codes 971/977 indicating amendment processing.

So why doesn't the IRS just tell us this directly? I spent 45 minutes on hold yesterday and the rep couldn't even confirm if my verification went through. Just said "keep waiting" which is so frustrating.

The IRS website actually explains some of this in their "Understanding Your Tax Transcript" section, but they definitely don't make it easy to find. I bookmarked this page that explains all the different codes: https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript-faqs

Will the 971/977 codes show up together? I'm confused about what to look for.

Based on Internal Revenue Manual section 21.4.1, transcript updates occur throughout the day, but are most significant during the weekly processing cycle (typically Wednesday night through Friday). Your "as of" date change indicates your account has been selected for the current processing batch. However, amended returns face significant backlogs per Notice 2023-11. If you need immediate confirmation about your verification status or processing timeline, I'd recommend using Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to reach an IRS agent without the hours-long hold times. Per IRS regulations, agents can provide specific details about your amended return status that aren't visible on transcripts.

Has anyone actually used this service? I'm a bit concerned about giving my information to a third-party just to speak with the IRS. Seems like there should be a better way to reach them directly.

I was hesitant at first too, but I used Claimyr last month when I was desperate to resolve an offset issue. It actually worked! Got through to an agent in about 25 minutes when I had been trying for days on my own. Saved me so much frustration.

Watch out for those "as of" date changes! Last year mine changed three times but my amended return still took 16 weeks to process. Have you checked for any notices being sent to you? Sometimes when the "as of" date changes but nothing else updates, they're preparing to send you a letter requesting more information. Check your mailbox carefully in the next week or so. Wouldn't it be better if the IRS just had a clear status tracker instead of making us decode all these subtle changes?

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the importance of checking both your account transcript AND your return transcript. The "as of" date only appears on the account transcript, but sometimes the return transcript will update first with processing information. Have you been checking both? Also, did you amend electronically or by paper? The processing times are dramatically different between the two methods.

I believe the community might be interested to know that the IRS is currently processing amended returns from January for electronic submissions and December for paper submissions, according to their operations page. Your in-person verification likely moved you ahead in the queue somewhat, but I would still suggest allowing at least a few more weeks before expecting significant movement. The "as of" date change is promising, though I wouldn't count on immediate further updates.

I had almost the exact same situation back in 2022. My "as of" date changed from 2/26 to 3/30, then nothing happened for 2 weeks. I called and they said my amended return was selected for review (not audit, just review). After that 2-week period, I suddenly had a refund date and the whole thing was resolved. Sometimes these things move in mysterious ways. Just like when I filed in 2019 and my return disappeared for 3 months before suddenly processing!

I verified in person on February 17th, 2024, and saw my "as of" date change on February 23rd. Then on March 2nd, I got all my transcript codes including the 846 refund issued code! The deposit hit my account on March 7th exactly as scheduled. In-person verification definitely speeds things up. Just hang tight - you're on the right track!
