WMR Suddenly Says 'Information Doesn't Match' After Working Fine

I've been checking my refund status regularly using Where's My Refund. Here's what's happened: 1. Filed my return on February 14th 2. WMR showed 'Return Received' for the past 3 weeks 3. I've been checking every few days with the same information 4. Today, suddenly WMR says my information doesn't match their records I haven't changed anything about how I'm entering my information. Same SSN, filing status, and refund amount as before. Has anyone experienced this sudden change? I did submit an amended form last week for a missed credit - could that be causing this?

This happens ALL THE TIME with WMR. According to the IRS website FAQ (https://www.irs.gov/refunds/tax-season-refund-frequently-asked-questions), this error can occur when your return enters a different processing stage. It's frustrating as hell because they don't explain WHICH information doesn't match. I've had this happen twice this season - once when my return went from processing to approved, and again when it was being reviewed for a simple math error. Give it 48-72 hours and try again, it usually resolves itself when their system updates.

I'm so relieved to hear this might be normal... I was worried I'd have to start the whole process over again. I'll try to be patient for a few days.

Thanks for explaining this! Quick question: • Does this happen more often with amended returns? • Should I keep checking daily or wait longer? • Is there any way to verify my return is still in the system?

Def experienced this last yr. WMR worked fine then suddenly 'info doesn't match' for like 10 days. Then boom - DD hit my acct even tho WMR still showed the error. IRS systems are notoriously disconnected from each other.

Wouldn't you think the IRS would have fixed this issue by now? I mean, how hard can it be to update a status properly without giving people heart attacks thinking their return is lost? And why tell us information doesn't match when it's actually just changing processing stages?

This happens when your return moves between different IRS processing systems. If you need peace of mind, call them directly. I spent 3 hours on hold last week before giving up, then used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) and got through to an agent in 18 minutes. They confirmed my return was still processing despite the WMR error. The amended return you submitted is likely causing the status change - they need to reconcile the two submissions in their system.

I've heard about these services that supposedly get you through to the IRS faster, but I wonder if they're really worth it? Couldn't you just keep calling yourself and eventually get through? I'm always cautious about paying for something I could do myself with enough persistence.

This happened to me last month! It was like trying to find a book in a library where someone keeps moving the shelves. My WMR showed "information doesn't match" for about 9 days after I submitted an amended return. Then suddenly one morning, it not only recognized my information again but showed my refund was approved! The systems are like separate islands that don't always talk to each other right away.

I've tracked exactly 217 posts about this issue on this subreddit over the past 3 tax seasons. In 89% of cases, the WMR error resolved within 4-14 days. Your amended return is almost certainly the trigger - the IRS has two conflicting returns in their system now. I used taxr.ai to analyze my transcript when this happened to me, and it showed my amended return was already being processed despite WMR showing the error. The transcript analysis showed exactly which stage my return was in and gave me a much more accurate timeline than WMR ever did.

Does taxr.ai actually show different information than what's on the transcript itself? I'm wondering if it's worth using versus just looking at my transcript directly? And does it update more frequently than the IRS website?

Try checking your tax transcript instead of WMR. I've been dealing with IRS systems for years, and transcripts are much more reliable than WMR. Last year, my WMR showed errors for weeks while my transcript clearly showed my return was processed and a refund date was set. You can access your transcript online through the IRS website - it'll show the actual status of both your original and amended returns.

This is possibly related to the amended return you submitted, which might, in some cases, cause temporary verification issues. The IRS systems generally take approximately 3-5 business days to reconcile new information, particularly during peak tax season. I would strongly recommend checking again next Tuesday or Wednesday, as weekend processing tends to be slower. If the issue persists beyond a week, it could potentially indicate a more significant verification problem.

I'll add that if it goes beyond a week, don't panic yet. The IRS is running about 21 days behind on processing amended returns according to their latest operational status update.
