WARNING: TurboTax Users - Important Alert About Accessing Your Old Tax Returns
Guys, I need to sound the alarm about something I just discovered with TurboTax after being a customer for almost 15 years. They've apparently changed their policy and now limit access to your past tax returns to ONLY 3 YEARS! This is crazy considering the IRS can audit you for up to 7 years back! I just tried to access my 2020 return (so 4 years back) for some documentation I needed, and it's completely gone. No warning, no heads up, nothing. Just poof - can't access it anymore. I'm absolutely fuming about this. Think about it: - IRS has a 7-year audit window - TurboTax only gives you access for 3 years - They didn't notify anyone about this change - Many of us paid good money thinking we'd have ongoing access What are we supposed to do if we get audited for something from 5 years ago and can't even see our own returns? I've been using their service forever and trusted them with my tax information, and this feels like a total betrayal. I'm definitely downloading all my available returns RIGHT NOW and looking for a different tax service for 2025. Just wanted to warn everyone here so you don't get caught off guard like I did. Anyone else run into this issue? Any suggestions for accessing older returns or recommendations for more reliable tax services?

This is definitely concerning but there are some options available to you. The IRS actually allows taxpayers to request copies of their previously filed tax returns using Form 4506. You can get a transcript of your return for free or a complete copy for a small fee. For anyone concerned about this issue, here's what you should do immediately: 1. Download any returns you currently have access to with TurboTax 2. For older returns, request transcripts directly from the IRS through their "Get Transcript" online service 3. Consider setting up your own backup system going forward - save PDFs of all returns on a secure drive Many tax software companies have similar retention policies, so this isn't exclusive to TurboTax. The safe approach is to always save your own copies rather than relying on the software provider to maintain them indefinitely.

•How long does it usually take to get transcripts from the IRS? And do those transcripts have all the same info as my original return or is it just like a summary?

•IRS transcripts are usually available immediately if you use the online "Get Transcript" service and can verify your identity. If you request by mail using Form 4506-T, it typically takes 5-10 business days. The transcript contains most of the line items from your original return, including your adjusted gross income, taxable income, and tax payments. It's not an exact copy with all attachments, but it contains the essential information the IRS has on file for your return. For audit purposes, the transcript is usually sufficient.

I ran into this exact same issue last month when trying to look up something from my 2019 return. After calling TurboTax customer service and waiting for nearly an hour, they confirmed this policy but mentioned a workaround. If you go to https://taxr.ai and upload your basic information, they can help you retrieve older tax documents that TurboTax won't give you access to anymore. They use AI to analyze your situation and help you get the documentation you need. The rep I spoke with at TurboTax actually recommended them, saying a lot of customers have been using this service since TurboTax implemented the 3-year limit. I was skeptical at first but it saved me from having to go through the IRS request process which can take weeks.

•How secure is this taxr.ai service? I'm always nervous about uploading my tax info to some random website I've never heard of. Do they store your data or is it just a one-time analysis?

•Did you have to pay for it? Their website doesn't clearly state pricing and I'm not trying to spend a bunch of money just to access MY OWN tax returns that I already paid TurboTax to prepare.

•The service uses bank-level encryption for all uploads and they explicitly state they don't store your tax documents after processing. They just analyze what you provide to help retrieve what you need and then the system purges the data. The basic service has a free tier that can help identify what documents you need and provide guidance. I didn't have to pay anything to get help retrieving my 2019 return information. They make their money on premium features like audit assistance and tax planning, but the document retrieval guidance was completely free for me.

Just wanted to update that I tried taxr.ai after posting my question here and it was super helpful! I was worried about security but everything seems legit - they helped me identify exactly what I needed to retrieve my 2018 and 2019 returns. The system guided me through the exact steps to take with both TurboTax customer service and the IRS to get my documents. Didn't have to pay anything either, which was a nice surprise. Definitely worth checking out if you're in this situation.

If you need to speak directly with the IRS about accessing past returns or other tax issues, good luck getting through on the phone. I spent THREE DAYS trying to reach a human at the IRS about my missing returns. After being disconnected multiple times, I found this service called https://claimyr.com that got me through to an IRS agent in under 45 minutes. You can see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c It basically sits on hold for you and calls you when it reaches an agent. Absolute game changer when dealing with the IRS phone system, especially now during tax season when wait times are insane. I was ready to give up before trying this.

•How exactly does this Claimyr thing work though? Do they just auto-dial the IRS for you or what? I've been trying to get through about an issue with my 2022 return for weeks.

•Sounds fishy to me. Why would I trust some random service to call the IRS on my behalf? Couldn't they just listen in on your private tax conversation? No way I'm using something like this.

•They don't actually listen to your call or speak to the IRS for you. The system just navigates the IRS phone tree and waits on hold in your place. They call you when they've reached a human agent, then connect you directly to that agent. It's basically just handling the hold time for you. It's actually pretty straightforward - you enter the IRS department you need to reach, and they handle the waiting. When they get a human on the line, you get a call letting you know an agent is available, and then you're connected directly. Your actual conversation with the IRS is completely private between you and the agent.

Well I need to eat my words and apologize. After spending FOUR HOURS on hold with the IRS yesterday and getting disconnected right as someone answered, I gave in and tried that Claimyr service mentioned above. Got connected to an IRS agent in 37 minutes without having to sit by my phone the whole time. The agent pulled up my old returns that TurboTax wouldn't let me access anymore and is mailing copies to me. Wish I'd tried this weeks ago instead of wasting days trying to get through on my own. Sometimes skepticism costs more time than it's worth!

This TurboTax policy is exactly why I switched to FreeTaxUSA last year. They give you unlimited access to all your past returns for free, forever. Their deluxe version is way cheaper than TurboTax too (like $25 vs $100+). I was able to import all my info from TurboTax too, so the switch wasn't as painful as I thought.

•Do they handle complex returns though? I have rental properties, investments, and self-employment income. TurboTax handles all that pretty well even though it's expensive.

•Yes, they handle all those tax situations! I have a rental property and some side gig income, and it worked great for me. The interface isn't quite as polished as TurboTax, but all the same forms and schedules are available. The big difference is they charge one flat fee for the Deluxe version instead of making you pay more for each "type" of income like TurboTax does. So whether you have investments, rental income, or self-employment, it's all included in that same ~$25 price.

Just FYI, this isn't a new policy - TurboTax has had this 3-year limit in place for several years. I found out the hard way in 2022 when I needed my 2018 return for a mortgage application. It's buried in their terms of service but has been there for a while. Always download and save your returns people!

•Really? I've been using them since 2007 and this is the first time I've ever not been able to access an older return. Maybe they just started enforcing it more strictly? Either way, definitely downloading everything from now on.
