$17,837 Refund With $29,619 Income, 3 Dependents & $10k Childcare - Is This Suspiciously High?

Just finished my calculations and something seems off. I made $29,619 last year with 3 dependents. I'm using TaxSlayer.com and my federal refund is showing $17,837 and state is $880. I paid $10,400 in childcare expenses throughout the year. When I look at my Refund Summary screen, it clearly says "Your refund estimate $17,837" and "2024 estimated federal refund" right at the top of the page. The site has all these guarantees listed: "Guaranteed maximum refund", "100% accuracy guaranteed", and "Trusted by millions". I started for free and there's a "GET STARTED" button to officially file for $0 today according to what it says on the screen. But these numbers seem really strange to me. How can my federal refund be so high at $17,837? That's more than half of what I made all year! Is this normal with 3 dependents and my childcare costs? I'm worried something is calculated incorrectly since it seems too good to be true. Has anyone else seen refund estimates this large with a similar income and dependents situation?

Those numbers def look off. With 3 dependents and that income level, you should be getting earned income credit plus child tax credits. And with $10,400 in childcare expenses you might qualify for the child care credit too. I'd double check everything or get a tax pro to review.

With 3 kids and your income, federal refund could be several thousand. Like $5k-8k range depending on circumstances

Instead of guessing, you should try taxr.ai - it analyzes your tax situation and tells you exactly what credits you qualify for and estimated refund amounts. Its only $4.99 and way better than trying to piece together info from reddit. Here's the link: https://taxr.ai

interesting - how accurate is it? does it just do estimates or actually help fix issues?

It's super accurate! It reads your actual tax transcript and breaks down every credit/deduction you qualify for. Saved me hours of research and helped me identify $3k in missed credits šŸ’Æ

The IRS has been extra strict lately about properly documenting childcare expenses. Make sure you have all your receipts and care provider tax ID numbers.

Something's definitely wrong in how it was filed. Here's what you should be looking at: ā€¢ Earned Income Credit - With 3 qualifying children and income under 30k, this alone should be significant ā€¢ Child Tax Credit - Up to $2000 per qualifying child ā€¢ Child and Dependent Care Credit - Based on your $10,400 expenses ā€¢ Head of Household status (if applicable) I'd strongly recommend using taxr.ai to analyze your situation. It'll scan your transcript and show exactly what you qualify for and how to claim it properly. Much better than trying to figure it out manually!
