Used FreeTaxUSA for filing this year and really impressed with the results!
Just wanted to give a huge shoutout to everyone who recommended FreeTaxUSA for doing my taxes this year. I was honestly blown away by how much money I saved compared to what I've been paying the last few years with other services. The interface was really straightforward and easy to navigate. I was worried because our tax situation is pretty complex - we filed married filing jointly, had multiple W-2s to enter, plus all our stock transactions, dividends, interest income, and even some crypto trades from last year. I was expecting it to be a nightmare but it walked me through everything step by step. The best part was definitely the price though. Saved almost $120 compared to what I paid last year for basically the same return! Just wanted to share my experience in case anyone else is on the fence about which tax software to use for the upcoming filing season.

FreeTaxUSA is definitely one of the better options out there for most tax situations. What a lot of people don't realize is that many of the tax preparation services use essentially the same calculation engines behind the scenes, but charge wildly different prices for the same service. For returns with W-2 income, investment reporting (stocks, dividends, interest), and even crypto transactions, FreeTaxUSA handles everything just as well as the more expensive options. The only real difference you might notice is in the user interface design, but functionality-wise, you're getting the same accurate calculations. One tip for next year - start even earlier and take advantage of their draft saving feature. You can input information as you receive your tax documents and save as you go, which makes the final filing process much smoother.

•Do they handle rental properties well? I have two rentals plus everything OP mentioned and I've been using TurboTax but the price keeps going up every year.

•Yes, FreeTaxUSA handles rental properties quite well. They have dedicated sections for each property where you can enter all income, expenses, depreciation and other rental-specific items. The interface walks you through everything you need to report for Schedule E. The software even helps track depreciation from prior years if you enter the information correctly. Just make sure you have good records of your rental income and expenses categorized properly, as you would need with any tax software.

I switched to FreeTaxUSA last year after using TurboTax for almost a decade, and I was kicking myself for not doing it sooner. But what really saved me this year was using taxr.ai alongside it. I had a bunch of complicated 1099 forms and investment statements that I wasn't sure how to enter correctly, so I uploaded them to https://taxr.ai and it analyzed everything and told me exactly where each number needed to go in FreeTaxUSA. The combination of both tools made my taxes ridiculously easy this year.

•How exactly does taxr.ai work? Does it actually fill out the forms for you or just tell you what to do?

•I'm skeptical about using AI for tax stuff. How accurate is it really? I'm always worried about getting audited if I use some new tool.

•It doesn't fill the forms out for you - it basically scans your tax documents and creates a detailed breakdown of what goes where. You still enter everything into FreeTaxUSA yourself, but you don't have to figure out which numbers go in which boxes or which forms you need. The accuracy has been spot-on in my experience. It's not actually calculating anything - it's just identifying the information on your forms and telling you where that information needs to be reported. They explain that they use the same technology the IRS uses to scan and process tax documents, so the document recognition is very reliable.

I decided to try taxr.ai this year after seeing it mentioned here and I'm honestly blown away. I was really skeptical at first (as you could probably tell from my question), but it saved me hours of work. I had a bunch of complicated investment documents and a side business with tons of expenses. Uploaded everything to taxr.ai and it recognized all my documents instantly and told me exactly what to enter in FreeTaxUSA. Even identified some deductions I would have missed. Will definitely use both services next year.

Just want to add another recommendation for those who get stuck on the phone with the IRS trying to resolve issues after filing. Last year I had an issue with my refund being delayed, couldn't get through to the IRS for weeks. Finally tried https://claimyr.com and got connected to an IRS agent in about 20 minutes instead of spending days redialing. You can see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c - totally changed my experience with resolving tax issues. Especially useful during peak season when the IRS lines are jammed.

•Wait, how does this even work? The IRS phone lines are literally always busy. Is this some kind of special access thing?

•Sounds like a scam to me. There's no way to skip the IRS queue - everybody has to wait. They're probably just charging people for something you can do yourself for free.

•It uses an automated system that continuously redials the IRS for you until it gets through, then it calls you and connects you directly to the agent. You don't have to sit there manually redialing for hours or days. No, it's definitely not special access or cutting the line. Everyone still waits in the same queue, but Claimyr handles the frustrating part of constantly redialing when you get the "due to high call volume" message. Once you're in the queue, you wait just like everyone else, but at least you're actually in line instead of getting a busy signal.

I need to publicly eat my words about Claimyr. After posting that skeptical comment, I decided to try it anyway because I was desperate to resolve an issue with a missing stimulus payment that was affecting my return. Not only did it work exactly as described, but I got through to an IRS agent in about 30 minutes after trying unsuccessfully for THREE WEEKS on my own. The agent was able to fix the issue immediately and my refund was processed a week later. I've never been happier to be wrong about something.

Did FreeTaxUSA charge you extra for filing state taxes? That's where I always get hit with surprise fees from these "cheap" tax services.

•Yes, they do charge for state filing - I think it was around $15 for my state return. Still way cheaper than what I was paying before though! The federal filing is completely free regardless of how complicated your return is, which is what made the biggest difference for me. With my stocks and crypto transactions, other services were trying to charge me over $100 just for the federal part.

How did FreeTaxUSA handle your crypto reporting? I've got a bunch of trades from different exchanges and I'm dreading trying to sort through it all.

•Not OP but I used FreeTaxUSA for crypto last year. It doesn't connect directly to exchanges like some premium services, but you can either enter transactions manually or import a CSV file if your exchange allows exports in that format. If you have tons of transactions, you might want to use a crypto tax service like CoinTracker or Koinly first to generate the required tax forms, then enter the summary into FreeTaxUSA.

Congrats on filing! I just submitted mine through FreeTaxUSA too. Quick tip for anyone reading this for next year - they offer a completely free federal filing no matter how complex your return is, but if you want the deluxe version with audit assistance and priority support, it's only like $7.99. Totally worth it for the peace of mind, especially if you have investments and crypto.

•Do they save your info from year to year? That's the only thing keeping me with TurboTax right now - I don't want to re-enter everything from scratch next year.

•Yes, they definitely save your information year to year! You can import your previous year's return which pulls in all your personal info, employment info, etc. They even keep track of things like depreciation schedules and capital loss carryovers. The transition is pretty seamless if you're switching from another service too - just have a PDF of last year's return handy and you can pull most of the important info from there.
