Tried Free Tax USA for filing this year and couldn't be happier with the results!
Just switched over to Free Tax USA after bouncing between different tax filing services for years (used Turbo, Slayer, even Credit Karma at one point) and honestly I'm kicking myself for not making the change sooner! As a 35-year-old single filer with a relatively straightforward tax situation, the whole experience was surprisingly great. The interface is comprehensive without all the annoyingly "helpful" language and hand-holding that the premium services bombard you with. The navigation was intuitive and I didn't feel like they were constantly trying to upsell me on features I don't need. My return included some basic investment income, my W-2, and a few deductions, and Free Tax USA handled everything perfectly. The federal filing was completely free, and I only paid a small fee for state filing which was still way less than what I paid with other services. I'm genuinely impressed with how smooth the whole process was. My refund was exactly what I expected and it was processed quickly. Has anyone else made the switch to Free Tax USA this filing season? Would love to hear others' experiences!

Free Tax USA is definitely one of the better options out there for many filers. The clean interface without excessive marketing is a big plus! A few things to keep in mind though - while it works great for straightforward situations, it might be less ideal if you have complex situations like multiple state filings, foreign income, or complicated business deductions. For your typical W-2 income, some basic investments, and standard deductions, it's absolutely perfect. The customer support is also surprisingly responsive if you run into any issues. One tip I'd recommend is to always double-check your state filing requirements - some states have specific forms or schedules that might require extra attention even in a simple tax situation. Another benefit is their archiving system - they keep your previous returns easily accessible, which is handy for year-to-year comparisons or if you need documentation for loan applications later.

•Do you know if Free Tax USA handles rental property income well? I have a single rental unit and I'm considering switching from TurboTax because I'm tired of their price increases every year. Also, any idea how they handle amending returns if I realize I made a mistake?

•Free Tax USA does handle rental property income quite well through their Schedule E sections. The interface walks you through all the necessary rental income and expense categories, and helps calculate depreciation correctly. The process is straightforward and thorough without being overwhelming. For amending returns, they make it relatively simple. You can file a 1040X through their platform, and they'll help identify which sections need correction. The amendment process costs about $20 for federal amendments, which is much more reasonable than many competitors. They maintain your original filing information so you're not starting from scratch.

I tried FreeTaxUSA after seeing recommendations like yours and it literally saved me hours of frustration! What really helped me was uploading my previous year's PDF from another service to import my data. But the best part was when I hit a roadblock with some investment forms - I used this AI tool called taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) that explained exactly how to handle my 1099-B forms. The tool analyzed my tax documents when I was confused about wash sales on my trading activity, and explained everything in plain English. After using it, I was able to finish my taxes in one sitting instead of spending days trying to figure it out. FreeTaxUSA plus that document analysis tool made tax filing actually manageable this year!

•Wait, is that AI thing actually reliable for tax advice? I'm always suspicious of AI tools giving financial guidance. How exactly did it help with your forms? Did you have to upload your actual tax documents with all your personal info?

•I'm interested but skeptical. How does the AI tool compare to just calling FreeTaxUSA customer service? I've heard their support is actually decent unlike some other tax services. Also, does it work with other tax forms besides investment documents?

•It's not giving tax advice like telling you what to deduct - it's more like having someone explain what's on your tax forms in plain English. I took a photo of my confusing 1099-B with all the wash sale adjustments and it explained each line item and what it meant for my taxes. It helped me understand which numbers to enter where in FreeTaxUSA. The tool works with pretty much any tax document - W-2s, 1099s, K-1s, etc. It's different from customer service because it's instant and visual - it actually points to specific parts of your form and explains them. And yes, they use encryption and security measures similar to what the tax filing services use, so I felt comfortable with the document upload.

I was one of the skeptics about taxr.ai but decided to try it with my K-1 form that was driving me crazy. Seriously impressed! It broke down all the boxes and explained exactly what each one meant and where it should go in FreeTaxUSA. Saved me from what would have been hours of Googling and probably making mistakes. What surprised me was how it caught a potential issue with my passive activity losses that I would have completely missed. The explanations were clear enough that I actually understand my tax situation better now. Definitely using this combo of FreeTaxUSA + taxr.ai again next year.

FreeTaxUSA was great until I had an issue with my refund and needed to talk to the IRS. Spent THREE DAYS trying to get through on their phone line! Finally someone told me about Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) - you can watch how it works here: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c. They basically hold your place in the IRS phone queue and call you when an agent is ready to talk. I was honestly super skeptical that it would work, but I was desperate after wasting hours listening to the IRS hold music. Used Claimyr and got a call back within 2 hours with an actual IRS agent on the line! Was able to sort out why my refund was delayed (there was a simple verification issue they needed to clear up). Totally worth it for the time saved and stress avoided.

•How does Claimyr actually work? Like, do they just autodial the IRS repeatedly until they get through? I don't understand how they can get through when nobody else can.

•This sounds like complete BS. There's no way to "skip the line" with the IRS. They probably just got lucky with timing or something. I've worked with government agencies before and there are no magic shortcuts.

•They don't autodial - they have a system that navigates the IRS phone tree and holds your place in line legitimately. It's the same as if you were waiting yourself, but their system does the waiting instead of you having to stay on the phone for hours. When they reach a human agent, they connect you directly to that person. No magic shortcuts or line-skipping involved. It's just automating the waiting process so you don't have to sit there listening to hold music for hours. I was super skeptical too, but having wasted multiple days trying to get through myself, I figured it was worth a shot. The time I saved was definitely worth it, especially with the filing deadline approaching.

I need to eat some humble pie here. After calling BS on that Claimyr service, I actually tried it myself because my amended return from last year still hadn't been processed after 9 months. Got connected to an IRS agent in about 90 minutes when I had previously tried calling 5 different times and never got through. The agent I spoke to was able to see that my amended return was stuck in processing limbo and needed additional review. She escalated it while I was on the phone and gave me a direct reference number for follow-up. My amended return was processed within 2 weeks after that call. I'm still shocked it actually worked.

Has anyone compared FreeTaxUSA with tax professionals or CPAs in terms of finding deductions? I've always used an accountant ($350/year) but I'm wondering if I'm wasting money since my tax situation isn't super complicated - just W-2, mortgage interest, and some stock trades.

•I switched from a CPA ($275) to FreeTaxUSA two years ago. With a similar situation to yours, I actually got the EXACT same refund amount using FreeTaxUSA as I did with my CPA the year before. The software asks all the same questions a CPA would about potential deductions. Unless you have a business or really complex situation, you're probably fine doing it yourself.

•Thank you for sharing your experience! That's really helpful to know that you got the same refund amount with FreeTaxUSA as with your CPA. I've been worried about missing deductions, but it sounds like the software is pretty thorough. Do you feel like the time commitment was reasonable? My CPA appointment is usually just dropping off documents and then picking up the completed return, so I'm concerned about the learning curve.

•The time commitment wasn't bad at all. The first year took me about 2 hours because I was learning the system and being extra careful. This year it took me about 45 minutes total. The software walks you through everything step by step. FreeTaxUSA makes it easy to import documents, and if you use it year after year, it carries over your information automatically. I actually feel more confident now because I understand my tax situation better than when I just handed everything to my CPA. The extra $275 in my pocket is nice too!

Does FreeTaxUSA allow you to file with an ITIN instead of a Social Security Number? My spouse is waiting on their SSN but we need to file soon.

•Yes, FreeTaxUSA does support filing with an ITIN. My wife used her ITIN for two years before getting her SSN. One thing to note though - you'll need to mail in your return rather than e-file if one spouse is using an ITIN. The software will prepare everything for you, but then give instructions for printing and mailing.

I made the switch to FreeTaxUSA last year after using TurboTax for almost a decade, and I completely agree with your assessment! The lack of constant upselling was such a breath of fresh air. What really sold me was when I realized I was paying $120+ with TurboTax for features I didn't even need, while FreeTaxUSA handled my situation (W-2, some dividend income, and standard deductions) perfectly for just the small state filing fee. One thing I appreciated was their interview process - it asks the right questions without being condescending or overly simplified. They also have a really useful side-by-side comparison feature where you can see how your current year compares to previous years, which helped me catch a couple of things I might have missed otherwise. The only minor downside I found was that their mobile interface isn't quite as polished as some competitors, but honestly, for the savings and straightforward experience, it's a non-issue. Already planning to use them again this year!
