Big thumbs UP for FreeTaxUSA - finally switched from TurboTax!
After using TurboTax for literally 12 years straight, I finally made the switch to FreeTaxUSA this tax season and honestly can't believe I didn't do this sooner! The IRS website suggested FreeTaxUSA based on my income level, and the process was surprisingly straightforward. The interface was different than what I was used to, but I managed to navigate through all the federal and state forms without much trouble. The best part? Federal filing was completely free, and I only had to pay $12 for my state return. The IRS site mentioned something about state being free too, but honestly, twelve bucks compared to the $89+ I was paying with TurboTax feels like highway robbery in reverse. Just wanted to share my experience in case anyone else is on the fence about switching. Anyone else made the switch recently?

Tax professional here! FreeTaxUSA is definitely one of the better options out there for most standard tax situations. The $0 federal filing is legitimate (they're part of the IRS Free File Alliance), and the state fee is significantly lower than most competitors. Just a quick tip for next year - if your AGI is under $73,000, you might qualify for completely free filing through the IRS Free File program, which could include both federal AND state at no cost depending on which service you use through that portal. The direct link is on the IRS.gov website. FreeTaxUSA does have limitations for more complex situations (like multiple rental properties or complicated investment scenarios), but for most W-2 employees with standard deductions, it's an excellent choice!

•So if I have a side gig with a 1099 but my main job is W-2, would FreeTaxUSA still work well for me? I've been using TurboTax Self-Employed which is crazy expensive but I'm worried about missing deductions if I switch.

•FreeTaxUSA actually handles side gigs and 1099 income quite well! It includes all the necessary Schedule C forms for self-employment and guides you through business deductions just like the expensive options do. The interface isn't quite as polished as TurboTax, but it asks all the same questions about business expenses, home office deductions, mileage, etc. I've had clients with side businesses who've saved over $100 by switching and still got the same refund amount. Just be organized with your expense tracking beforehand.

I was feeling pretty overwhelmed trying to figure out how to do my taxes this year when I stumbled across taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) after someone mentioned it in another thread. What's cool is you can actually upload your tax documents and it will extract all the information for you, so you don't have to manually enter everything like with FreeTaxUSA. I used it alongside FreeTaxUSA this year and it was a game changer - saved me so much time because I have like 6 different W-2s and investment forms to deal with. It pulled all the numbers automatically and told me exactly where to enter them. The document verification feature helped me catch a mistake on one of my 1099s too.

•Wait so does this actually file your taxes for you or is it just helping you organize the info before you enter it somewhere else? And is it secure? I'm always paranoid about uploading my docs with all my personal info.

•I'm a little confused about how this works with FreeTaxUSA. Does it just tell you what numbers to input or does it somehow transfer the data directly? I hate manually entering all my stuff but not sure I understand the workflow here.

•It doesn't file your taxes for you - it's more like a helper tool that extracts all the important numbers from your tax documents. You still need to enter them into FreeTaxUSA or whatever tax software you're using, but you don't have to hunt through all your forms to find the right numbers. They use bank-level encryption for document storage and processing, and they don't store your documents long-term unless you specifically want them to. I was paranoid about security too but felt comfortable after reading their privacy policy. The workflow is pretty simple - you upload your documents to taxr.ai, it extracts all the data and gives you a clean summary of everything, then you just reference that while filling out FreeTaxUSA. It's especially helpful when you have multiple forms or complicated documents since it organizes everything by form type and tells you exactly which numbers go where.

Just wanted to follow up about my experience with taxr.ai after trying it out. Holy crap it actually worked really well! I had 3 W-2s from different jobs this year plus some investment stuff that's always a pain to enter manually. Uploaded everything and it pulled all the numbers perfectly. The best part was the verification feature that caught a discrepancy between what my employer reported for health insurance premiums and what was actually on my final paystub. Ended up saving me about $340 on my taxes because I was able to correct it. Definitely using this with FreeTaxUSA again next year!

If you're having trouble getting through to the IRS about any issues (which I always do this time of year), I highly recommend Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). They have this service that gets you connected to an actual IRS agent without the 2+ hour hold times. I was skeptical but you can see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c I had an issue with my prior year return that was preventing me from e-filing with FreeTaxUSA (something about AGI verification), and I needed to talk to the IRS directly. Called through Claimyr and got connected in about 10 minutes instead of waiting for hours. The IRS agent was able to verify my identity and fix the issue so I could file.

•How much does this service cost? Sounds like it could be helpful but I'm guessing it's not free?

•This sounds too good to be true. How exactly do they get you through faster than everyone else? Isn't that basically cutting in line? I tried calling the IRS last month and gave up after an hour on hold.

•The service is definitely worth it considering the time saved - I'd rather not discuss specific pricing here but it's very reasonable compared to the hours of your life you get back. They use an automated system that waits on hold for you and then calls you when an actual human IRS agent is on the line. It's not cutting in line - they're essentially waiting in the queue for you, and then connecting you once they reach an agent. It's completely legitimate and they've helped connect over 175,000 people to government agencies. I was definitely skeptical at first too but it genuinely works. Saved me an entire afternoon of listening to that awful hold music!

Alright I need to eat my words about Claimyr. After my skeptical comment I decided to try it anyway because I've been trying to resolve an issue with a missing stimulus payment for MONTHS. Used their service yesterday and got connected to an IRS agent in about 15 minutes. The agent was actually super helpful and found that my payment had been redirected to an old bank account. They're now reissuing the payment to my current address. Would have taken me at least 3-4 more attempts calling directly and wasting hours on hold. Definitely a lifesaver during tax season when the wait times are insane. Using it with FreeTaxUSA saved me from the usual tax season stress spiral.

I'm still on the TurboTax train but getting annoyed with the constant price increases. My return is pretty simple - one W-2, standard deduction, and one state. How hard was the transition to FreeTaxUSA? Were you able to import last year's information or did you have to start from scratch?

•I had to start from scratch since there's no direct transfer between TurboTax and FreeTaxUSA, which was annoying but not the end of the world. Just had my previous year's return pulled up on my laptop for reference. The interface is definitely different - less hand-holding than TurboTax but still very straightforward. I found it actually asked fewer unnecessary questions. For your simple situation, I think you'd find it super easy. The whole process took me about 30 minutes for both federal and state. The biggest adjustment was getting used to a different layout, but the savings made it totally worth it.

Has anyone compared FreeTaxUSA to other free options like Cash App Taxes (formerly Credit Karma Tax)? I've been using Cash App for a couple years since it's free for both federal AND state, but I'm wondering if FreeTaxUSA might be better for some reason.

•I've used both. Cash App Taxes is good if you want completely free federal+state, but FreeTaxUSA has better support for certain tax situations. Cash App struggled with my HSA contributions and some investment stuff last year. FreeTaxUSA's interface is also more thorough in my experience - it asks more detailed questions that might help find deductions. But if your taxes are super straightforward and you want totally free, Cash App is fine.

•Thanks for the comparison! I do have some investment accounts and started contributing to an HSA this year, so maybe FreeTaxUSA would be better. $12-15 for state isn't a big deal if it means a more accurate return. Might give it a try this year.
