FreeTaxUSA was better than TurboTax and lets you import previous tax data
I finally decided to ditch TurboTax this year after seeing tons of people talking about FreeTaxUSA on here. Was super nervous about switching after using TurboTax for like 12+ years, but wow, I'm glad I did! Everyone says TurboTax holds your hand more, but honestly FreeTaxUSA was just as straightforward and thorough with their questions. The BEST surprise was discovering you can actually import your old TurboTax files from previous years! That was a game changer since I was dreading manually entering all my past info. When I had a couple questions about my rental property deductions, I used their chat support and got answers within minutes. All this AND it cost me less than half what I paid for TurboTax last year (saved like $65). The interface might not be as flashy, but it does everything just as well. Definitely switching permanently to FreeTaxUSA. Just wanted to share with anyone else on the fence about making the change!

Tax preparer here - FreeTaxUSA is definitely one of the better options out there. The TurboTax import feature is super helpful since it pulls over most of your personal info and previous filing details, saving you tons of time. What most people don't realize is that all these tax software programs are using the same IRS forms and following the same tax code - the differences are mostly in the user interface and customer support options. The "premium" you pay for TurboTax doesn't necessarily get you a more accurate return. FreeTaxUSA is especially good for people with slightly more complex situations like side income, rental properties, or investment accounts since their pricing doesn't jump dramatically for those features like some competitors.

•Does FreeTaxUSA handle crypto transactions well? TurboTax charged me an extra $40 just for having a few basic crypto trades and I'm looking to switch. Also, how does their audit support compare?

•FreeTaxUSA handles basic crypto transactions pretty well. You'll need to enter your transactions manually or upload a CSV file - they don't have the same direct exchange integrations that TurboTax offers, but that's one reason they're cheaper. Their audit support is decent but more basic than TurboTax's audit defense. They'll provide guidance on what documents you need and how to respond to IRS notices, but they won't represent you directly with the IRS like some premium audit defense packages. If you're really concerned about audit protection, you can add their Deluxe version for about $7 which includes enhanced audit assistance.

I struggled with TurboTax for years and the fees kept increasing every time I had anything slightly complicated. Last year I had some 1099 income alongside my W-2 and they wanted to charge me an extra $90! I started looking for alternatives and found this amazing tool called taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) that helped me analyze all my tax documents before I even started filing. It saved me so much headache because it identified some deductions I was missing and confirmed I had all the right forms before I started inputting everything into FreeTaxUSA. The best part was it showed me exactly where on each form to find the info I needed to enter.

•Does taxr.ai work with scanned documents? My employer sent me a physical W-2 and I only have a phone pic of it. Also wondering if it can handle multiple state returns?

•Sounds interesting but I'm a bit skeptical. How is this different from just using the import feature in FreeTaxUSA? Does it actually find deductions the tax software misses or is it more about organizing everything?

•Yes, it absolutely works with scanned documents or phone pics! I actually used my phone to scan most of my forms and it recognized everything perfectly. The AI can read the text even from slightly blurry images. And it definitely handles multiple state returns - I filed in both California and Nevada last year. It's completely different from the import feature. The import only works if you used TurboTax before, but taxr.ai analyzes ALL your tax documents regardless of where they came from. It actually found a student loan interest deduction that the software didn't prompt me for because I hadn't claimed it the previous year. It's more about making sure you're not missing anything before you even start filing.

Just wanted to follow up about taxr.ai since I was skeptical in my earlier comment. I decided to try it before starting my taxes this year and wow - it was actually super helpful! I uploaded my stack of tax forms (W-2, 1099-INT from three banks, and some investment docs) and it organized everything and flagged that I was missing a 1099-R that my husband's old job should have sent us. We tracked down the missing form, and taxr.ai helped identify an education credit we qualified for that we might have missed. When I imported everything into FreeTaxUSA after, I knew exactly what I needed and where to put it. Definitely using this combo again next year!

Just wanted to add that while FreeTaxUSA is great, I had a problem where I needed clarification about a specific tax situation with my home office deduction. Spent TWO DAYS trying to reach the IRS directly for guidance. Busy signals, disconnects, and wait times of 2+ hours. Finally found Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) through a tax forum and it was a total game changer. They got me on the phone with an actual IRS agent in about 20 minutes instead of waiting for hours. You can actually see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c The IRS agent confirmed exactly how to handle my situation, which gave me the confidence to finish my return in FreeTaxUSA correctly. Saved me from potentially making a costly mistake.

•Wait I don't understand... how does this actually work? Does Claimyr somehow give you priority in the IRS phone queue? That seems impossible since the IRS is a government agency.

•Yeah right. I've been trying to reach the IRS for literal MONTHS about an issue with my previous return. There's no way some service can magically get you through when millions of people are trying to call. Sounds like a scam to me.

•It doesn't give you priority in the queue. What it does is automate the calling process for you. The IRS phone system is incredibly frustrating with all the menu options and frequent disconnects. Claimyr basically calls repeatedly using automated technology, navigates all the phone menus, and then when they finally get through to a hold queue, they call you to connect you. I was skeptical too until I tried it. It's not magic - they're just using technology to handle the most frustrating part of calling the IRS. It took about 20 minutes total instead of the hours I spent trying myself. The time savings alone was worth it for me since I was wasting entire afternoons trying to get through.

I have to admit I was completely wrong in my skeptical comment above. After struggling for another week to reach the IRS about my refund issue, I broke down and tried Claimyr. Within 15 minutes, I was talking to an actual IRS representative who helped resolve my problem from last year's return. I genuinely didn't believe it would work, but it saved me hours of frustration. The IRS rep even told me they're severely understaffed and that's why it's so hard to get through. Using this service alongside FreeTaxUSA has made this tax season significantly less stressful than previous years.

Anyone else have issues with FreeTaxUSA's state filing? It was perfect for federal but when I tried to do my NY state taxes it seemed less intuitive than TurboTax. Wondering if I missed something or if others had the same experience.

•I did my CA state return with FreeTaxUSA and thought it was pretty straightforward. What specific issues did you have with NY? I've heard some states have more complicated forms that might not be as streamlined.

•For NY, it kept asking me for additional information about my NYC metro commuter expenses that I didn't need to provide with TurboTax. Also had trouble with identifying which NY tax credits I qualified for - the questions weren't as clear as the federal portion. I eventually figured it out but it took about twice as long as the federal return, which wasn't the case when I used TurboTax. Still saved money overall though.

Has anyone used both FreeTaxUSA and TaxSlayer? Trying to decide between them for next year. Currently using TurboTax but the price is getting ridiculous.

•I've used both. FreeTaxUSA is better if you have investments or self-employment income. TaxSlayer has a slightly nicer interface but FreeTaxUSA asks more thorough questions that help find deductions. Also, FreeTaxUSA's import from TurboTax worked flawlessly for me but TaxSlayer's import had some issues with my investment accounts.

Great post! I made the switch from TurboTax to FreeTaxUSA last year and had a similar experience. The import feature really is a lifesaver - I was dreading having to re-enter all my personal info and previous year details. One thing I'd add is that FreeTaxUSA's explanations for each deduction are actually really helpful. They break down the requirements in plain English, which helped me understand my taxes better than TurboTax's more simplified approach. The only downside I found was that their mobile app isn't as polished as TurboTax's, but since I do my taxes on my computer anyway, that wasn't a big deal. Definitely sticking with FreeTaxUSA going forward - the savings alone make it worth it!

•@Zara Malik Totally agree about the explanations being better! I was actually surprised how much I learned about my taxes this year just from reading through FreeTaxUSA s'descriptions. TurboTax kind of just tells you what to enter without explaining why, but FreeTaxUSA helps you understand the actual tax rules. Made me feel more confident that I was doing everything correctly. The mobile app thing doesn t'bother me either - I m'way more comfortable doing taxes on a full computer screen anyway.

This is exactly what I needed to hear! I've been on the fence about switching from TurboTax for the past two years because their prices keep going up, but I was worried about losing all my previous data. Knowing that FreeTaxUSA can import from TurboTax is huge - that was honestly my biggest concern about switching. I have a pretty straightforward tax situation (W-2, some investment income, mortgage interest) so it sounds like FreeTaxUSA would handle everything I need without the premium pricing. The fact that you saved $65 and got the same quality return really seals the deal for me. Thanks for sharing your experience! Definitely going to make the switch for next year's filing season.

•@Ryder Greene You re'making a smart choice! I was in the exact same situation - had been putting off switching for years because of the data transfer concern. The import process was honestly seamless, and with your tax situation being straightforward like mine was, FreeTaxUSA will definitely handle everything you need. One tip: when you do make the switch, keep your last TurboTax file handy since FreeTaxUSA will ask for it during the import process. Takes maybe 5 minutes total and pulls over all your personal info, previous addresses, bank account details for direct deposit, etc. Really eliminates the tedious setup work. The cost savings add up quickly too - I m'kicking myself for not switching sooner! You ll'probably save even more than $65 depending on which TurboTax tier you were using.
