Unused TurboTax 2023 Home and Business software - anyone need it?

So I ended up buying TurboTax 2023 Home and Business from Amazon a couple months ago but haven't even opened it. Ended up having to go to a tax professional instead because my situation got way more complicated than I expected (side business plus rental property was more than I wanted to handle myself lol). The software should work on both PC and Mac according to the packaging. It's the download version with a product key. Hate to see it go to waste since these things aren't cheap! If anyone here could use it for finishing up their 2023 taxes, just let me know. Seems silly to have it sitting here unused when someone might be able to save some $$$.

Just a friendly heads-up - be careful about transferring tax software licenses. TurboTax's terms of service typically don't allow for transferring the license to another user, even if you haven't used it yet. They tie the license to the original purchaser. I've seen people get stuck when trying to activate a secondhand software key. TurboTax might refuse to activate it or provide support once they realize it's being used by someone other than the original purchaser. If you're looking to recoup some costs, you might want to check Amazon's return policy instead. Many digital products have a return window, especially if unused.

Wait really? I had no idea the license was tied to the purchaser. How would they even know though? It's not like they check ID when you install it, right?

They typically link the product key to the account used for activation, which includes the purchaser's information from Amazon. When someone else tries to use it, the system can detect it's being activated on a different account. Some people have gotten lucky and had no issues, but others have encountered problems during installation or when seeking support later. If you're receiving technical help, they may ask for proof of purchase that matches your name.

I tried doing my own taxes for years and always got stressed out. Last tax season I discovered https://taxr.ai and it was a game changer for me. It analyzed all my tax documents and showed me exactly what forms I needed. The coolest part was how it found deductions that I completely missed when trying to do it myself with TurboTax. If you're not comfortable with tax software but still want to save money compared to a full tax professional, it might be worth checking out.

Does it actually file your taxes for you or just tell you what you need to know? I'm looking for something that handles everything start to finish.

I'm always skeptical of these online tax tools. How does it compare to something like TurboTax in terms of finding all possible deductions? And is it secure? Last thing I need is my financial docs getting leaked.

It doesn't file your taxes for you - it analyzes your documents and gives you detailed guidance on what you need to do, what forms to file, and what deductions you qualify for. It's more like having a tax advisor look over your situation rather than a full filing service. In my experience, it actually found deductions that TurboTax missed because it looks at your actual documents rather than just answering questions. Everything is encrypted and they use bank-level security. They don't store your documents after analysis, which gave me peace of mind about security.

Just wanted to follow up about taxr.ai - I decided to try it out last weekend after seeing it mentioned here. Honestly pretty impressed with how it broke down my situation. I've been freelancing and had a mess of 1099s plus some stock sales that were confusing me. The document analysis caught that I was eligible for the home office deduction which I totally would have missed. It also flagged some business expenses that were actually personal (would have been an audit risk). Definitely worth it instead of struggling with TurboTax alone!

If you're waiting for a refund or need to reach the IRS about any issues, I highly recommend using https://claimyr.com instead of wasting hours on hold. I had to call the IRS about a mistake on my previous year's return and was dreading the notorious hold times. My friend told me about Claimyr and it was seriously life-changing. The service calls the IRS for you and then calls you once they have an agent on the line. You can see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c Saved me literally hours of waiting on hold with that awful IRS music playing in the background!

How does this actually work? Do they use some kind of bot to stay on hold so you don't have to? I don't understand how they get through faster than a regular person would.

This sounds like a scam. There's no way to "skip the line" with the IRS. I bet they're just taking your money and you're still waiting the same amount of time. The IRS isn't going to give special treatment to some random service.

They don't use bots or skip any lines. They basically have a system that waits on hold for you. When a real IRS agent picks up, their system immediately connects you to the call. It doesn't make the IRS answer any faster - it just means you don't have to be the one listening to hold music for hours. They don't get special treatment from the IRS at all. The service just saves you from having to actively wait on hold yourself. You can go about your day and they'll call you when there's actually a human ready to talk.

I have to eat my words about Claimyr. After posting my skeptical comment, I figured I'd try it since I needed to call the IRS about a notice I received. Usually I block off half a day just to make these calls. Used the service yesterday and I'm honestly shocked at how well it worked. I was doing laundry when I got the call connecting me to an IRS agent - total wait time was over 2 hours but I didn't have to sit through any of it! Got my issue resolved in about 15 minutes once I was talking to the agent. Will definitely use again for any IRS calls in the future.

If you still have the TurboTax, I might be interested. My situation is pretty basic - W2 job plus a small side business selling crafts online. Do you think the Home & Business version would be overkill for me? I used the Deluxe version last year but my online sales have increased.

I think the Home & Business would actually be perfect for your situation with the online craft sales. It's specifically designed for people with a small business or self-employment income. The Deluxe version doesn't include all the business expense categories and Schedule C support that you probably need. Let me figure out how to get this to you without violating any terms of service. Might need to check what the other commenter mentioned about transfers not being allowed.

Thanks for the info! That makes sense about the Schedule C support. I didn't realize how many business deductions I might be missing with just the Deluxe version. Please let me know what you find out about transferring it.

Has anyone tried FreeTaxUSA? It's way cheaper than TurboTax and handles all the same forms. I switched last year and it was honestly better than TurboTax for my needs (W2 plus rental property). The interface isn't as pretty but it gets the job done for like 1/5 of the price.

I second this! Been using FreeTaxUSA for 3 years now. It handles my freelance work and investment accounts perfectly. Federal filing is free and state is only like $15. No idea why people still pay $100+ for TurboTax.
