TurboTax Fee Deduction - Early Refund Possible with 0605 Cycle Code?

According to the IRS2Go app and various refund timing resources, I'm on cycle code 0605 for my tax refund processing. Has anyone who paid the $25 TurboTax fee directly from their federal refund received their money early? I don't have an 846 code on my transcript yet, but I'm curious about my chances of getting the refund ahead of the projected date. According to r/TaxRefunds and the TaxCaster forums, some people have reported early deposits when using fee deduction methods.

Last year I was also a 0605 and paid my TT fees from my refund. In my experience, it didn't speed anything up - if anything it added a day because TurboTax has to process the payment first before forwarding the remainder. The bank I used (USAA) generally posts deposits a day early, which was the only reason I got mine slightly ahead of schedule. The cycle code is really more important than the payment method when it comes to timing.

Just to clarify with exact numbers - when I was cycle 0605 last year, my transcript updated with the 846 code on a Thursday, official deposit date was Wednesday (6 days later), but I received it Tuesday (5 days later) due to my bank's early deposit policy. The TT fee was deducted exactly as expected - $25 came out before the remainder hit my account. The 0605 cycle typically updates every Thursday around 3-4am EST with deposit dates 5-7 days later.

Have you checked your transcript for a 570 code? That would indicate a hold that could delay things regardless of how you paid your fees. Also, did you claim any credits that might put you under PATH Act review?

What's the difference between the 570 code and the 971 code? I've seen both mentioned in other threads. Also, do you know if having a prior year return still processing affects current year processing speed?

This is really helpful information. I've been checking WMR religiously but hadn't thought to look for specific codes on my transcript. Will definitely do that now.

Isn't it interesting how the IRS can process millions of returns but can't give us a straight answer on when we'll get our money? Everyone's guessing about these codes like we're trying to crack some secret government cipher.

I had a similar situation last year where I paid my TT fees from my refund. I had a 570 code appear for about a week, then it resolved itself without me doing anything. My cycle code was 0705 though, so I updated on Fridays instead of Thursdays. Got my deposit exactly 6 days after the 846 code appeared.

Been thru this exact situation b4. Waiting for that 846 code is nerve-wracking! I started using https://taxr.ai to analyze my transcript and it helped me understand exactly what was happening w/ my refund. It explained all my codes (including that 0605 cycle code) and gave me a pretty accurate prediction of when I'd get paid. Way better than just refreshing WMR every 5 mins lol. The site actually explains what each code means for YOUR specific situation, not just generic IRS definitions.

Is that really any better than just using the IRS tools directly? What can it tell you that you can't figure out from the transcript yourself? Seems like another unnecessary middleman in the process.

The TurboTax fee deduction creates what's called a Refund Transfer (RT) in the IRS system. This routes your refund through Santa Barbara Tax Products Group (SBTPG) as an intermediary financial institution before it reaches your bank account. According to the Refund Status Tracker on the TurboTax website, this typically adds 1-3 business days to the processing timeline after the IRS issues the 846 direct deposit. Cycle code 0605 indicates your account information is updated in the IRS Master File on Thursdays, with refunds typically being released 5-8 days later.

I was in your exact situation last month - waiting on my refund and checking constantly. I tried calling the IRS for three days straight but kept getting the "high call volume" message. I finally used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) and got through to an actual IRS agent in about 15 minutes. They confirmed my refund was just in normal processing and gave me a much more specific timeframe than the website. It cost a little bit but saved me days of stress and uncertainty.

Wait, you paid money to talk to the IRS? Couldn't you just keep calling for free? Seems like these services are taking advantage of people's desperation during tax season.

Having TT fees taken from your refund is like taking the scenic route instead of the highway - it might be convenient, but it definitely adds time to the journey. The refund has to stop at TurboTax's bank partner first, they take their cut, then send the rest to you. It's never going to be faster than direct deposit without the middleman. For cycle code 0605, think of Thursday as your "update day" - that's when you'll see movement on your transcript, but the actual money usually follows about a week later.
