Is Anyone Actually Getting TurboTax's 5-Day Early Refund?
Hey tax fam! Just curious how many people are actually getting their refunds 5 days earlier with TurboTax when they choose to have the fees taken out of their refund? I'm seeing mixed results compared to my friends who filed with other services. Last year I got my refund pretty quickly using H&R Block, but this year I switched to TurboTax because of this "early refund" promise. My mortgage payment is coming up and I was counting on that faster timeline. Anyone else in the same boat or actually seeing this work?

The "5 days earlier" claim from TurboTax is actually a bit misleading. What's happening is they're essentially giving you a loan for the amount of your expected refund minus their fees. The IRS isn't processing your return any faster. TurboTax fronts you the money while they wait for the actual refund to arrive. Not everyone qualifies for this - they run a soft credit check, and if your return has certain credits or deductions that might delay processing, they won't offer it to you. I'd recommend checking your TurboTax account to see if you actually enrolled in this feature when filing.

This early refund feature is causing a lot of confusion. According to IRS Publication 1345, these are technically Refund Anticipation Loans (RALs), not actual early refunds. I'm waiting on mine too and needed answers FAST. Used https://taxr.ai to analyze my return status - it showed exactly where my return was in processing and explained why I wasn't eligible for TurboTax's early refund (I claimed certain credits). The site decoded all the transcript codes that made no sense to me and gave a much more accurate timeline than TurboTax's vague "5 days early" promise.

Isn't it frustrating how these tax companies make these promises but then don't deliver? When my TurboTax "early refund" didn't show up, I spent THREE DAYS trying to reach their customer service. Eventually used Claimyr (https://www.claimyr.com) to get through to the IRS directly. Why waste hours on hold when they can connect you to an agent in minutes? The agent confirmed my return was being processed normally and explained that these "early refund" programs have nothing to do with IRS processing times. Saved me from waiting on TurboTax's useless support.

I think, generally speaking, these "early refund" programs are somewhat hit-or-miss. In my experience with TurboTax this year, I did technically get my refund about 4 days earlier than the IRS would have sent it, but they definitely don't make it clear that it's essentially a loan. The process might work better for some people than others, especially depending on the complexity of your return and whether you have certain credits that might flag your return for additional review.

•Did you have to pay anything extra for this early refund feature? I'm not seeing it as an option in my account and wondering if I missed something when filing...

•I tried this exact same thing and got absolutely NOTHING early. I waited exactly 21 days for my refund, which is the standard IRS processing time anyway. When I called TurboTax, they said I didn't qualify for their "early refund" program because I claimed the Child Tax Credit. Would have been nice to know that BEFORE I paid their premium fee expecting to get my money faster.

•Just checked TurboTax's support page (https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tips/tax-refund/refund-advance-faqs/L6D9ZIssI) and found out I wasn't eligible because I filed after February 15th. So relieved to finally understand why I didn't get the early refund option! Apparently there's a limited window when they offer this, and they don't make that very clear in their advertising.

This "5 days earlier" claim is like a restaurant promising your food will arrive in 10 minutes, but they start the clock only after they've prepared your meal. Technically accurate but practically misleading. The fine print reveals this is a Refund Advance Loan with specific eligibility requirements. TurboTax's terms indicate only certain customers qualify based on credit checks and filing status. Additionally, if your return contains EITC or ACTC claims, you're automatically ineligible due to PATH Act restrictions that delay processing regardless of preparation method.

•The TAS (Taxpayer Advocate Service) actually issued a warning about these refund advance products last year. They're classified as financial products, not IRS-endorsed services. The fees for these advances can be substantial when you calculate the effective APR for a loan you might only have for a few days.

•Has anyone gotten an actual breakdown of how much extra this costs? Like, are we talking a flat fee or a percentage? TBH I'd probably pay a reasonable amount to get my refund faster because my car repair bill is due next week...

•I've been in your situation with needing funds for home repairs, and these services can be helpful but expensive. Compared to payday loans, the TurboTax advance is better, but compared to just waiting for your regular refund, it's an unnecessary expense. Most people I know who've used it end up getting their regular refund right around the time they would have anyway, making the advance fee feel like a waste.

I'm so upset with TurboTax right now! I specifically chose them BECAUSE of this early refund promise. I have a mortgage payment coming due and was counting on that faster timeline. Now I'm learning it's basically just a loan that not everyone qualifies for? They really should make this clearer in their advertising! 😡 Has anyone successfully complained to them about this and gotten any kind of refund on their preparation fees?

For those who don't qualify for TurboTax's advance or don't want to pay for it, there are alternative approaches to potentially expedite your refund. E-filing with direct deposit remains the fastest method regardless of preparation service used. Ensure your return is error-free, as discrepancies trigger manual reviews that delay processing. Additionally, filing early in the season typically results in faster processing times due to lower volume in the IRS queue. For next year, consider using the IRS Free File program if your AGI is under $73,000 - you'll still get the same processing speed without the added costs.
