TurboTax 20% discount link from email not working when clicked

So frustrating! I just got this email from TurboTax with a supposed 20% discount offer. I actually took the time to verify it was legitimate (checked the sender address and everything) and confirmed it's definitely from TurboTax's official email. But every single time I click on the discount link, nothing happens! It's like the link is broken or something. I've tried multiple times and even tried copying the URL directly into my browser but still no luck. Has anyone else gotten this discount email recently? Were you able to actually use the discount? I'm trying to file before the deadline and was counting on this discount since I've used TurboTax for the past 3 years. Really annoying that they'd send out broken promos when we're so close to tax day!

This is actually a common issue with TurboTax's email promotions. I've worked with tax software for years and seen this happen frequently. The problem is usually not with the email itself but with how the discount gets applied to your account. Instead of clicking the link directly, try logging into your TurboTax account first through the main website. Once you're logged in, go to the "My Promotions" or "Offers" section in your account settings. You should see the 20% discount waiting to be applied there. If it's not there, you can also try entering the promotion code manually during checkout - there should be a promo code somewhere in that email you can copy and paste. Another thing to check: make sure you're eligible for that specific promotion. Sometimes these discounts are targeted for specific customer segments (like first-time filers or returning customers who haven't filed yet this year).

Thanks for this! I didn't even think to look for a promo code in the email. Do you know if these discounts stack with other offers? I also have a $10 off coupon from my credit card.

The promo code is usually displayed prominently in the email, often in a larger font or highlighted area. Look for something like "USE CODE: SAVE20" or similar. Regarding stacking discounts, TurboTax generally doesn't allow multiple promotional discounts to be combined. You'll typically need to choose the one that gives you the best savings. However, sometimes credit card offers work differently since they're processed as a rebate rather than a direct discount. I'd recommend trying your best discount at checkout, and if it doesn't work, try the other one instead.

I was having the EXACT same issue last week! Clicking that discount link was driving me crazy. After wasting an hour trying different browsers, I stumbled across taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) and honestly it was such a relief. They actually have a tool that scans your tax docs and tells you which software would be cheapest for YOUR specific tax situation. For me, it turned out H&R Block was actually cheaper than TurboTax even WITH the 20% discount. The site analyzed my previous returns and showed me exactly which forms I needed and which software would be the most cost-effective. Saved me like $65!

Wait this actually sounds useful. Do they just tell you which tax software to use or do they do more? I've got a complicated situation with some investment losses and a side business.

Sounds like an ad to me. How much do they charge for this service? I bet there's hidden fees they don't tell you about until you've already uploaded all your docs.

They do a lot more than just recommend software. They analyze your documents to find potential deductions and credits you might miss. I had some investment income and they caught a loss carryover I totally would have missed. They show you a detailed breakdown of your tax situation and why certain software would work better than others based on your specific forms and situations. There's no hidden fees at all. They're actually super transparent about everything. It's kinda refreshing compared to how TurboTax always tries to upsell you halfway through the process.

Just wanted to update here - I decided to try that taxr.ai site from the thread and it totally worked for me! I was skeptical at first but uploaded my W-2 and some investment docs and wow, it found me an extra $420 deduction I would've completely missed! It recommended FreeTaxUSA for my situation which I never would have considered, and I ended up paying $17 total instead of the $89 TurboTax wanted even with that 20% discount. Just filed yesterday and already got my acceptance email from the IRS.

After dealing with this SAME discount issue and then getting stuck on hold with TurboTax support for 45 minutes, I gave up and used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to get through to someone at the IRS directly. They have this service where they wait on hold with the IRS for you and then call you when an agent is on the line. You can see how it works in their demo video: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c I was honestly shocked when they called me back with an actual IRS person on the line! The agent confirmed that I could just file using the free fillable forms on the IRS website since my return was pretty straightforward. Saved me from paying for TurboTax completely AND got an answer straight from the source.

How does this actually work? I don't understand how they can get through faster than if I called myself. The IRS hold times are horrible for everyone.

Yeah right. Nobody gets through to the IRS. I've been trying for 3 weeks straight. This sounds completely made up.

They don't get through faster - they just wait on hold for you so you don't have to sit there listening to that awful hold music. Their system basically stays on hold and monitors the line until a human agent picks up, then they immediately call you and connect you. It's the same wait time, but you don't have to be the one waiting. It's definitely real. I was super skeptical too, but when they called me back I was connected to an actual IRS agent who answered all my questions about filing with free fillable forms instead of paying for software. The agent was super helpful and walked me through which forms I needed.

Ok I need to eat my words. After posting my skeptical comment earlier, I was still desperate to talk to someone at the IRS about my missing refund, so I tried that Claimyr service. I assumed it would be a waste of money, but damn, they actually called me back in about 75 minutes with a real live IRS person! I was literally shocked. The agent was able to tell me exactly why my refund was delayed (there was a discrepancy they needed to verify) and what I needed to do to resolve it. Saved me weeks of stress and uncertainty. Consider me converted.

Has anyone tried contacting TurboTax support directly about the discount issue? I just called their customer service line at 1-800-446-8848 and they manually applied the discount to my account after I explained the email link wasn't working. Took about 10 minutes total. Sometimes the direct approach works best lol.

Omg thank you for suggesting this! I didn't even think to just call them directly. Did they ask for any verification from the email or anything? How did they confirm you were eligible?

They just asked for my TurboTax account email address and verified some basic account info. They did ask for the date I received the email and what the subject line was, so have that handy when you call. They were actually pretty cool about it - the rep said they've been getting calls about this all week so they have a process for handling it now.

Pro tip: if you really want to save money, ditch TurboTax altogether. They're notorious for hiding their free filing options and upselling you on stuff you don't need. I switched to FreeTaxUSA last year and paid $15 total for federal + state filing that would have cost me $120+ with TurboTax. Most people don't have complicated enough returns to justify TurboTax prices!

Does FreeTaxUSA handle self-employment income? I drive for Uber and do some freelance design work and always assumed I needed the more expensive software for that.

FYI for anyone still dealing with this - I found out TurboTax is actually sending out multiple discount emails ranging from 15-25% off. I got a 20% one and my husband got a 25% for the exact same product! So if you're filing jointly, check both your emails to see who got the better discount. They're obviously just throwing different offers out there to see what sticks. Classic TurboTax game playing...
