Transcript Updated - Does This Mean I Can Skip ID Verification?
I'm wondering if anyone might know... I noticed my tax transcripts were updated recently, which seems like a good sign. Does this possibly mean I won't need to go through the ID verification process this year? I had to verify my identity last year which was quite a process, and I'm hoping to avoid that again if possible. Just trying to understand how the system works and what to expect going forward.

Updated transcripts are generally a positive indicator, similar to how your bank statement updates when transactions process. However, ID verification requirements depend on multiple risk factors, not just transcript availability. Compared to previous years, the IRS has actually expanded verification requirements for 2024 returns, especially for taxpayers claiming refundable credits. The system evaluates each return independently each year, so last year's verification doesn't necessarily exempt you from this year's process.

Thanks for explaining this! I have a few follow-up questions: ā¢ Does having the same address as last year reduce chances of needing verification? ā¢ How long after transcript updates might I receive a verification letter if one is coming? ā¢ Is there any way to proactively verify before being asked?

This is incredibly helpful information. I appreciate the technical details about how the verification process works across tax years. I've been preparing extensively for potential verification requirements this year by gathering all my documents ahead of time just in case.

I had my transcripts update on March 12th, 2024, and still received an ID verification letter on March 28th. The transcript update only means your return is in the system, not that it's been fully processed or approved. Last year's verification doesn't carry over to this year as the IRS evaluates each filing season independently. When I called on April 3rd, the agent confirmed that verification requirements are determined case-by-case each year regardless of previous verifications.

Would you mind clarifying the timeline between your verification and when your refund was released? I'm wondering if there's a standard processing timeframe after successful identity verification.

Did you verify online or did you have to go in person? I'm dreading the possibility of having to take time off work again for this... last year was such a hassle! š©

Unfortunately, transcript updates and ID verification are somewhat separate processes in most cases. The IRS might flag your return for verification at virtually any point in the processing timeline, even after transcripts update. If you do end up needing to verify and can't get through on the regular IRS lines (which is quite likely during peak season), you might want to try Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). I've found that their service can possibly help you bypass those frustrating hours of hold time when you need to speak with an actual IRS representative about verification issues.

I've heard about services like this before, but I'm wondering about the actual process. In my experience with the IRS last year, even after getting through to someone, I still had to complete the verification in person. Does reaching an agent faster actually help with the verification process itself?

Isn't it ridiculous that we need to pay a third party just to talk to the agency we fund with our tax dollars? What happens if you use this service but still need to verify in person? Do they refund your money?

I had a similar situation last year. My transcripts updated about 3 weeks after filing, but I still received a 5071C letter requesting verification a week later. I had meticulously planned everything - gathered all documents, scheduled time off work, and even did a practice run to the verification office. What I've learned is that transcript updates and verification requirements operate on parallel tracks. The IRS uses an automated system called Taxpayer Protection Program that screens returns independently from the regular processing that updates transcripts.

Be aware that according to IRM 25.25.6, the Taxpayer Protection Program can select returns for identity verification regardless of transcript status. The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration reported that for Tax Year 2023, approximately 5.6 million returns were flagged for identity verification. Even if your transcripts show processing activity, you may still receive a Letter 4883C, 5071C, or 5747C requiring verification. Have you checked for any pending notices on your transcript? A TC 971 with certain action codes often indicates verification is needed.

I was SO RELIEVED when my transcripts updated last month! I thought the same thing - that I was in the clear! Then boom - got that dreaded letter asking me to verify anyway. It felt like such a letdown after seeing my transcript update! The good news is that after verifying, my refund came through within 9 days. The big picture here is that the IRS systems work independently - one system updates transcripts while another handles identity verification flags.

Transcript updates mean nothing. Got mine updated. Still got verification letter. Had to verify anyway. Complete waste of time. System makes no sense. Don't count on avoiding it. Be prepared just in case. IRS doesn't care if you verified last year.

Thank you for the direct warning. I need to know exactly what to expect with my refund timing. I have exactly 32 days until a major payment is due, and was counting on this refund. Did it delay your refund by more than 21 days when you had to verify?

I just went through this! I found some helpful videos on YouTube about the verification process. My transcripts updated on February 18, and I still got a verification letter on March 2. The IRS website says verification can add 9 weeks to processing time, but mine only took about 3 weeks after verification.

Have you checked for any specific transaction codes on your transcript? Certain codes like 570 or 971 might indicate whether you're likely to need verification or not.
