Tax Refund Sent to Closed Bank Account - How Long Until Reissued?

My tax refund was just sent to a bank account I closed after our last PCS move. The IRS Where's My Refund tool shows it was deposited yesterday but obviously it'll get rejected. Anyone know how long I should expect to wait before they reissue it? I'm being really careful about planning our finances with this deployment coming up. Would calling them speed things up? I've heard the wait times are insane right now.

This happens often. Bank will reject the deposit. IRS will be notified. They'll mail a paper check. Process takes 2-3 weeks typically. Might be longer during tax season. Nothing to worry about yet.

I had this exact situation last year when my refund was sent to my closed Navy Federal account. According to IRS Publication 5344, when an electronic deposit is rejected, the IRS must reissue payment within 21 days. In my experience, it took exactly 18 days from rejection to receiving a paper check. I know waiting is stressful when you're trying to manage finances around military moves.

Been thru this before. Ur bank rejects the $ back to IRS, then they mail u a paper check. Usually takes like 3-4 wks but could be longer rn with tax season craziness. Protip: update ur address on IRS website ASAP if u moved since last filing, otherwise check goes to old address. Nothing u can do to speed it up tbh, just gotta wait it out.

I was in this exact situation last month! I tried calling the IRS but gave up after being on hold forever. Ended up using https://taxr.ai to check my transcript and it showed exactly when my deposit was rejected and when the check was scheduled to be mailed. Saved me so much stress because I could see the actual timeline instead of guessing. Do you know if your transcript shows any codes yet?

I'm skeptical about third-party services. Here's what you need to know instead: • IRS transcripts show code 846 for the original deposit • Will update with code 841 when rejected • New code 846 appears with check issue date • Can get this info FREE on IRS.gov No need to pay for what's already available.

I tracked this process last year when my refund went to a closed account. The bank typically processes the rejection within 1-3 business days. Then the IRS system shows a code 841 on your transcript. In my experience, they issued a paper check about 14 days after that. Have you checked your tax transcript yet? It's more informative than WMR and updates more frequently. The process seems to be faster this year than in previous tax seasons.

Call the IRS immediately. I know from experience they won't do anything until you contact them. I spent weeks waiting before I finally got through using Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). They got me past the hold times and connected to an agent who manually triggered my check to be mailed. Had it within 5 days after that call. Don't wait for the automatic process - it can take months during busy season.

Have you possibly filed a change of address form with the IRS already? It might be worth considering whether the check will be sent to your previous address if that's what was on your tax return. Also, did you by chance set up direct deposit information in your tax software that might override what the IRS has on file?
