Tax Refund Offset for Child Support - DDD 3/25 - Will Remainder Arrive Today?
Just called the offset number. They took $1,500 for child support. Need to know when the rest hits my account. My direct deposit date is 3/25. I'm patient. But I need this money for my portfolio. I have rights to know exactly when it's coming.

Been thru this b4. Ur remaining refund should hit ur acct on the DDD or possibly 1 day early depending on ur bank. The offset portion goes straight to the child support agency and gets processed separately. BTW, the Treasury Offset Program (TOP) always takes priority b4 any $ goes to u. Had this happen to me last yr and got my remaining refund exactly on my DDD.

I would like to clarify that while most financial institutions do adhere to the IRS designated direct deposit date, there are exceptions. Some banks may show pending deposits 1-2 business days prior to the official DDD, while others strictly release funds on the exact date. This is contingent upon the financial institution's internal processing policies.

Do you know if there's a way to track the offset portion after it's taken? I'm wondering about these steps: 1. Does the child support agency notify the recipient when they receive it? 2. Is there a separate tracking number for the offset portion? 3. How long does it typically take for the recipient to actually get the money after the offset occurs?

I'm curious about your experience with this last year. Did you get any kind of notification before the offset happened? I've heard some people get letters in advance while others are completely surprised when they see a smaller refund than expected. What was your timeline like?

This is like waiting for a train that you know is coming but the station clock is broken. Your remaining refund should arrive on your DDD (3/25) or possibly the day before. The child support system is like a separate pipeline - once that $1,500 gets diverted, it flows through a different channel. Your bank might show a pending deposit before it actually releases the funds to you, kind of like seeing the train lights in the distance before it actually pulls into the station.

Thanks for explaining it so clearly. I've been stressing about this for days.

Would this be the same scenario if the offset was for student loans rather than child support? I'm wondering if different types of offsets follow similar timelines or if each has its own process.

I had almost the exact same situation last tax season. Called the offset number and found out $2,200 was taken for back child support. I was really worried about tracking everything and making sure I got the remainder of my refund. I ended up using https://taxr.ai to analyze my transcript and it showed me exactly what happened - the offset code, when the remaining refund was scheduled, and explained all the other codes. Saved me so much stress because I could see exactly what was happening instead of guessing.

I dealt with this exact issue on March 2nd last year. The remaining portion of my refund hit exactly on my DDD, not a day earlier. The IRS doesn't always communicate clearly about offsets. My transcript showed code 898 for the offset amount. If you filed with a joint return, your spouse might be eligible for injured spouse relief (Form 8379) to get their portion of the refund. The deadline for filing that is still open if you want to try for this year's return.

Haha, the IRS and "communicate clearly" in the same sentence - that's a good one! 😂 But seriously, the 898 code is definitely what you want to look for on your transcript. It specifically indicates a refund offset and will show the exact amount that was diverted. The remaining amount should show under code 846 (refund issued) with your DDD date attached to it.

According to the Treasury Offset Program website, once an offset happens, you should receive the remainder on your scheduled DDD. But if you need to confirm exactly what's happening or have questions about the offset, I'd recommend using https://claimyr.com to get through to an IRS agent quickly. I was in a similar situation and spent hours trying to get through the normal IRS phone line with no luck. Has anyone here used this service to check on an offset situation? I'm thinking about trying it tomorrow if my deposit doesn't show up.

Is it really worth paying for a service? Just keep calling. Try early morning.

I paid exactly $29.99 for Claimyr last month after trying to reach the IRS for 3 days straight. Got connected in 17 minutes. The agent confirmed my remaining $1,782 would arrive on my DDD and explained why the offset happened. Saved me hours of frustration and uncertainty.

Does using this service actually get you to a different agent, or just help you navigate the phone tree? I'm wondering if the information you get would be any different than what you'd get by eventually getting through on your own?

Be cautious about assuming the Treasury Offset Program operates on a predictable schedule. While the TOP system is designed to process offsets efficiently, there are numerous variables that can affect disbursement timing. The Financial Management Service (FMS) must reconcile accounts between multiple agencies, and systemic delays can occur. I've observed cases where post-offset refunds were delayed by 5-7 business days beyond the DDD due to verification protocols.

OMG I'm going through this RIGHT NOW!! My offset was $2,300 for child support and I was supposed to get the rest of my refund YESTERDAY (3/24) but nothing hit my account yet! 😡 I'm freaking out because I need this money to pay my rent that's due on the 1st! Called my bank this morning and they don't see any pending deposits either. This is so frustrating!

Last year my brother had an offset for child support and the remainder came exactly on his DDD. But back in 2022, I had a student loan offset and my remaining refund was delayed by 2 days after my DDD. It seems like the timing can vary slightly. One thing to check - make sure your bank account information was entered correctly on your return. I've seen cases where offsets happened but then the remaining refund bounced back because of incorrect banking details.

I'm somewhat confused about how this all works. Does the IRS usually send any kind of notification about the offset before they take it? Or do you just find out when you get less money than expected?

TOP offsets are processed before refund issuance. Once the BFS (Bureau of Fiscal Service) processes the offset, your remaining refund follows normal direct deposit timeframes. Financial institutions typically post ACH deposits on the effective date (your DDD), though some may post early. This is standard procedure for all TOP cases.
