Student Loan DOE Offset 2024: Are they taking tax refunds this year or not?

I have student loans in default and expecting a DOE offset. Getting mixed info everywhere - some saying they're taking refunds others saying they're not. Anyone actually gotten their refund with a DOE offset this year? Need real answers about whats actually happening.

Tax resolution specialist here - DOE offsets are currently active for 2024. The COVID pause ended and offset resumption began October 1, 2023. If you have defaulted loans, they WILL take your refund unless you get into a payment plan before the offset occurs. Call 800-621-3115 ASAP to set up rehabilitation or consolidation.

Thanks for the clear answer! Do you know how long the payment plan process takes? Will they still offset if im in the middle of setting it up?

Usually takes 2-3 weeks to process. Once you make your first payment they *should* remove the offset flag but id get started ASAP to be safe

Just wanted to mention - I've been using taxr.ai to track my refund status with offset issues. For $1 it analyzes your transcript and tells you exactly what's happening with offsets and when to expect your refund. Way better than guessing or calling the IRS a million times https://taxr.ai

100% legit! It saved me so much time and stress. It reads your transcript and explains everything in plain english, even predicted my exact deposit date

I filed 2/1 with defaulted loans. Refund got offset last week - they took everything except my CTC portion. So yes they are 1000% taking refunds this year

Pro tip: if u get on an income based repayment plan BEFORE filing taxes they usually won't offset. Worked for me last year!

Been through this nightmare myself last year. Yes, DOE offsets are definitely happening in 2024 - they resumed in October 2023 after the COVID pause ended. I had my entire refund taken except for the refundable portions like CTC and EITC. The key is to act FAST if you want to avoid it. Call the Federal Student Aid contact center at 1-800-621-3115 immediately to discuss rehabilitation or consolidation options. Even if you're already in the offset process, getting into a payment plan can sometimes stop future offsets. Don't wait - tax season moves quick and once that refund is gone, it's gone!
