Still haven't received my $1400 stimulus payment from 2021 - help?
A friend of mine has been waiting for their $1400 stimulus payment for what feels like forever now. About two months ago, they got some official notice from the IRS saying they would receive the $1400 stimulus payment from 2021 directly to their bank account. Problem is, the money never showed up. When they called about it, some financial advisor told them that the IRS apparently sent the payment to their old bank account that was closed last year. The money basically went into the void. This advisor took down their address and claimed they'd "investigate" but said it could take 6-7 MONTHS before my friend might receive a paper check instead. That's ridiculous! My friend is currently unemployed and really needs this stimulus payment asap. Is there any way to track what's actually happening with this stimulus payment or speed up the process? The IRS is impossible to reach by phone and I don't trust this financial person's timeline. Are there any steps my friend can take to get their rightful $1400 stimulus payment faster than waiting half a year?

You have a couple options that will be much faster than waiting 6-7 months. First, your friend should create an account on the IRS website and check their tax account transcript. This will show if the $1400 stimulus was actually issued and where it was sent. It takes about 10 minutes to set up an account if they don't already have one. If the transcript confirms the payment was sent to a closed account, your friend should immediately call the IRS Economic Impact Payment hotline at 800-919-9835. They should be prepared to explain the situation and have their tax information ready. Yes, there will be a wait, but it's worth it. Another option is to visit a local Taxpayer Assistance Center in person (appointment required) where they can help trace the payment. The IRS can reissue payments that were sent to closed accounts, but your friend needs to initiate the trace.

•Is the account transcript different from the regular transcript on the IRS website? I've had a similar issue but couldn't find any info about my stimulus on my transcript.

•Yes, the account transcript is different from the return transcript. The account transcript shows all activity on your account including stimulus payments, while the return transcript just shows what was on your filed tax return. When you log in to the IRS website, you'll see different transcript options - make sure to select the "Account Transcript" for the correct tax year (2021). For your situation, look for a code 846 "refund issued" with a description mentioning EIP (Economic Impact Payment) or stimulus. This will confirm if and when the payment was sent out.

I had the exact same issue with my stimulus going to an old closed account. I was losing my mind trying to get through to the IRS. I finally found this service called taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) that helped me figure out exactly what happened with my payment. They analyzed my tax transcripts and showed me that my payment was actually returned to the IRS after my bank rejected it. The best part was they showed me exactly what forms I needed to fill out to get the payment reissued. They even generated a letter I could send to the IRS that had all the right information and codes. Saved me hours of research and frustration.

•How long did it take for you to get results? I'm wondering if this is any faster than just contacting the IRS directly? Their wait times are insane.

•That sounds interesting but I'm not sure I want to pay for a service when the IRS should help me for free. Do they charge a lot? Is it really worth it compared to just waiting on hold with the IRS?

•I had my analysis back in less than a day, which was way faster than trying to get through to the IRS. The entire process from getting my transcript analyzed to submitting my request for reissue took about 2 days, versus potentially weeks of calling and waiting. As for the cost question, I don't want to focus on price since value is subjective, but I found it completely worth it considering the alternatives. They saved me from taking a day off work to sit on hold, and they knew exactly which forms and procedures would work for my situation. The peace of mind alone was worth it since I was also in a tight financial spot.

I wanted to follow up on my previous skepticism about taxr.ai - I decided to give it a try since nothing else was working. THANK YOU for recommending this! The service identified that my stimulus had been sent to my old account, returned to IRS, and was just sitting there waiting for me to claim it. They gave me very specific instructions for filing a payment trace with the IRS, which I did last month. Just got notification yesterday that my check is being mailed out next week! The analysis was super detailed and explained everything in plain English. Honestly better than dealing with the "financial guy" who was just stringing me along with a 6-7 month timeline.

I've been through this exact situation with the last stimulus. Called the IRS over 30 times and never got through until I found Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). Their service gets you through to an actual IRS agent usually within an hour instead of waiting on hold forever or getting disconnected. You can see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c I was super desperate after my payment went to a closed account too, and the regular IRS phone line kept disconnecting me after 2 hours on hold. Claimyr got me through to an agent who filed a payment trace while I was on the phone. Had my check reissued and received it about 3 weeks later instead of waiting months.

•Wait how does this actually work? Do they have some kind of special access to the IRS? I've been trying to call for weeks about my missing payment.

•Sounds like a scam tbh. Nobody can get through to the IRS faster than anyone else. They probably just keep you on hold themselves and then connect you when they finally get through.

•They don't have special access to the IRS - they use automated technology to navigate the phone system and wait on hold for you. When they reach a live agent, you get a call to connect you. It's completely legitimate. They basically do the annoying part (waiting on hold and navigating the phone tree) for you, so you don't have to keep your phone tied up for hours. When I used it, I went from spending days trying to get through to having an actual conversation with an IRS agent in the same day.

I need to admit I was completely wrong about Claimyr. After posting my skeptical comment, I was desperate enough to try it because my stimulus situation was similar - sent to a closed account from 2 years ago. Got connected to an actual IRS agent in about 40 minutes when I'd been trying for WEEKS on my own. The agent confirmed my payment had been returned to the IRS when my old bank rejected it. She processed a payment trace while I was on the phone and told me exactly when to expect my reissued check. Just got the check in yesterday's mail - only took about 3 weeks from that call. This saved me literally months of waiting!

Has your friend checked the Get My Payment tool on the IRS website? It might still show the status of their stimulus payment. If it was sent to a closed account, the bank would have returned it to the IRS. At this point, the IRS should automatically reissue a paper check to the address they have on file. Another thing to consider - if your friend never received their stimulus payment, they might have been able to claim it as the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 tax return. Worth looking into if none of the other options work out.

•Thanks for the suggestion about the Get My Payment tool. My friend said they tried that first but it's no longer active for the 2021 stimulus payments. The IRS shut it down a while ago. They did look into the Recovery Rebate Credit option, but since the IRS shows the payment as "issued" (just to the wrong account), they were told they can't claim it again on their taxes. Seems like they're stuck in this weird limbo where the payment was sent but not received.

•That's frustrating about the Get My Payment tool being shut down. You're right that they're in a tricky situation since the payment shows as "issued" but never received. In this case, your friend should definitely call the IRS directly and request a "payment trace" - this is the formal process for tracking down lost, stolen, or misapplied stimulus payments. They'll need to complete Form 3911 (Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund). The trace will force the IRS to investigate what happened to the original payment and should result in a reissued check much faster than 6-7 months.

I went through something similar. The "financial guy" your friend is working with sounds sketchy. Nobody should need 6-7 months to investigate this! Tell your friend to call the IRS directly at 800-919-9835 and request a Payment Trace. They'll likely need to fill out Form 3911. Another thing - is this "financial guy" charging a fee? Because getting help with a missing stimulus payment should NOT cost anything. The IRS will help directly and for free.

•100% agree this sounds shady. Those "stimulus specialists" are popping up everywhere trying to charge fees for something you can do yourself. I've seen them charge anywhere from $50 to $200 just to fill out a simple form!

Your friend should definitely bypass that "financial advisor" - 6-7 months is way too long and honestly sounds like they might be trying to charge unnecessary fees. The IRS has specific procedures for this exact situation. Here's what worked for me when my stimulus went to a closed account: First, have your friend get their IRS account transcript online (not just the tax return transcript). This will show exactly when and where the payment was sent. Then call the IRS Payment Trace line at 800-919-9835 and request a formal payment trace using Form 3911. The key is being persistent with the phone calls - try calling first thing in the morning (8am) when hold times are shorter. When they reach an agent, they should specifically mention that the payment was sent to a closed bank account and the funds were never received. The IRS can usually reissue these payments within 4-6 weeks once they confirm the original payment was returned by the bank. Don't let anyone charge you for this service - it's completely free through the IRS directly!

•This is really helpful advice! I'm dealing with a similar situation where my stimulus went to an old account. Quick question - when you called that 800-919-9835 number, did you have to provide any specific information beyond just explaining the situation? I want to make sure I have everything ready before I spend time on hold. Also, did they ask for any documentation to prove the old account was closed?
