SNAP Overpayment & Tax Offset Concerns - Not Listed on TOP but Worried About Refund Interception

My state refund is looking good this year but I'm worried about a SNAP overpayment offset. It's not showing on the Treasury Offset Program line but I'm still concerned. I missed a few payments on my payment plan last year but I'm catching up now and wasn't defaulted. Anyone dealt with SNAP offsets hitting their refund even when it wasnt listed on TOP? Specifically wondering if it hits federal first or if state gets grabbed too. The state revenue office cant check offsets until they process refunds so I'm in the dark here.

If youre current on your payment plan and the debt isnt showing in TOP, you should be okay for federal. State refunds are different - each state has their own offset rules and databases. The key here is that you weren't defaulted on your payment plan. Keep making those payments and document everything 💯

Thanks for this! do you know how long it usually takes for SNAP debts to show up in TOP after missing payments?

Usually takes 3-4 months of missed payments before they refer to TOP. But since ur back on track now u should be good

lmao the IRS and state systems are such a mess. like how hard is it to have one system that shows everything? 🤮

Each state handles offsets differently unfortunately. In my case (different state), SNAP debt hit my federal first, then state about 2 weeks later. But I was defaulted on my payment plan so different situation

ugh that sucks. did they at least notify you before taking it?

nope! just woke up one day and boom, refund was gone 💀

Pro tip: call your state SNAP office directly. Sometimes they can tell you if your debt has been referred for offset even if it's not showing up yet. The hold times are brutal but better than getting surprised later

I had a similar situation a couple years back! The good news is if you're not defaulted on your payment plan and it's not showing in TOP, you're probably in the clear for federal. State offsets work differently though - they usually happen faster and don't always sync with TOP. Since you're catching up on payments, document everything and keep those payment confirmations handy. Worst case scenario, if something does get offset, you can usually get it released pretty quickly if you're actively paying on the plan 🤞

This is really helpful! I'm new here and going through something similar. Quick question - when you say "document everything," what specific records should I be keeping? Like just payment confirmations or is there other stuff I should save too? Thanks for sharing your experience!
