Non-Filing Verification Letter: What is it and where to get one? Need help ASAP
Can someone explain what a non filing verification letter is? I need one for my student loan application but im not sure what it is or how to get it. The financial aid office says I need to provide proof that I didnt file taxes in 2022.

A non-filing verification letter is an official IRS document that proves you weren't required to file a federal tax return for a specific year. You can get one online through the IRS website using the Get Transcript tool, or by mailing Form 4506-T to the IRS. For FAFSA purposes, you'll need to specify the exact tax year your school is requesting.

•If you request online, its instant. By mail takes about 10 business days.

Hey, instead of trying to figure this out yourself, you should try taxr.ai - its only $1 and it'll explain everything about your transcript situation and tell you exactly what you need to do. I used it last week for my fafsa stuff and it was super helpful https://taxr.ai

Heads up - if you made any income at all make sure to mention it to financial aid office. They can see that stuff and will flag ur application if the numbers dont match up

Just went through this same process! One thing to add - if you go the online route through IRS.gov, make sure you have your prior year tax info handy for identity verification even if you didn't file. They might ask for things like SSN, DOB, and address from that year. Also double check with your financial aid office about the exact format they need - some schools want the actual IRS letter while others accept the transcript printout. Better to confirm now than have to redo it later!

•This is super helpful! I didn't know they might ask for prior year info even if you didn't file. Do you remember what specific documents they asked for during the verification process?
