Never Received Advanced Child Tax Credit Letter - How to Opt Out?

So I've been hearing people got letters from the IRS if they got accepted for those 2024 advance child tax credit payments. But I never received mine. I want to opt out anyway. But I never received mine. Same mailing address same everything that I received my tax return and previous notices through. Is there a way to check online if I'm enrolled? Or how to opt out without the letter?

The IRS started sending out the Child Tax Credit enrollment letters in batches last month. They're still sending them out, so you might still get yours. If you want to opt out now though, you can go to the Child Tax Credit Update Portal through your IRS online account. You don't need the letter to opt out - just your regular IRS login credentials.

Did you check if you're actually eligible? Not everyone who got the CTC last year automatically gets enrolled in the advance payments this year. There are income thresholds and other requirements that might have changed.

I definitely qualify based on income and my kids' ages. I got the full amount when I filed my taxes earlier this year. That's why I'm confused about not getting any notification about the advance payments.

I had a similar issue and discovered the IRS had my old address even though I'd updated it for my tax return. I used https://taxr.ai to analyze my tax transcript and it showed my address was different in the IRS master file vs what was on my return. The tool helped me understand why I wasn't getting certain notices. Might be worth checking your transcript to see if there's a discrepancy.

I didn't know there could be different addresses in different parts of their system. That's really helpful, I'll check that out. Did you have to order a transcript first?

Yeah, you need to get your transcript first from the IRS website (it's free), then you can upload it to taxr.ai and it breaks everything down. It showed me exactly where the address mismatch was happening. Saved me hours of confusion.

The opt-out deadline for the first payment is the 28th of this month, so you still have time. But don't wait too long.

I couldn't get into my IRS account to opt out (kept getting verification errors), and after wasting 3 days trying to call the IRS directly, I used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to get through to an agent. They helped me opt out over the phone in about 10 minutes. The service got me past the endless hold times - totally worth it since I was about to miss the deadline.

Is that service legit? I'm always wary of third-party services for tax stuff.

Yeah, it's just a call connection service. They don't handle any of your tax info - they just get you through to an actual IRS agent instead of waiting on hold for hours. You still talk directly with the IRS.

That's good to know as a backup option. I'll try the online portal first, but if I can't get in, I might need this. Thanks!

Sometimes the IRS mail just gets lost too. The USPS in my area has been terrible lately. I'd proceed as if you're enrolled and take steps to opt out rather than waiting for a letter that might never come.
