NJ State Tax Refund DDD 3/11 - Early Deposit with Chime?

Just received my DDD (Direct Deposit Date) notification for my NJ state tax refund scheduled for 3/11. I utilize Chime as my financial institution. Does anyone have experience with whether NJ state refunds post early with Chime similar to how federal refunds sometimes do? Looking for specific timeframes based on past filing cycles. TIA!

In my experience, state refunds don't follow the same early deposit patterns as federal refunds. I've seen NJ state refunds take exactly the time indicated, unlike federal returns where Chime might post 2-5 days early. The NJ Treasury processes these differently than the IRS does, so I wouldn't count on seeing it before the 11th. That said, it's not impossible - just less likely compared to what happens with federal refunds.

According to NJ Administrative Code 18:35-2.3, state refunds are processed according to the specified schedule regardless of the financial institution. The early deposit feature some banks advertise primarily applies to payroll and federal tax refunds, not state-issued payments. NJ Treasury doesn't release the ACH transfers with the same advance timing as the federal system.

But doesn't it depend on when NJ actually initiates the transfer? I've heard some states send the ACH 2-3 days before the DDD to ensure it arrives on time. Does NJ follow this practice or do they send exactly on the DDD?

I've had NJ state refunds for the past three years. In my experience, they do initiate the transfer 1-2 business days before the DDD, but it's not consistent like the IRS system. Last year my DDD was a Monday and it hit my Chime account on Saturday morning. The year before, it came exactly on the DDD. It varies based on processing batches and when they initiate the ACH.

You might want to check Chime's specific policies for state tax refunds. From what I know, NJ typically releases the funds exactly 24-48 hours before the DDD, and Chime typically posts deposits within 2 hours of receiving the ACH notification. This means you *might* see it as early as March 9th, but definitely not the 5-7 days early that some people see with federal refunds. I'd plan for the 11th but keep an eye on your account starting on the 9th.

Last year I was obsessively checking my account for my NJ refund. The DDD was April 14th, and I finally got fed up with waiting and called NJ Treasury. Spent 3 hours on hold before giving up. Then I tried Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to reach them - got through in about 25 minutes. The agent confirmed they had initiated the transfer but it was in a pending state. Got my deposit that night at 11:30pm. Sometimes just confirming the status can give you peace of mind instead of constantly checking your account.

Does NJ Treasury even take calls about refund status? Thought they only had online tools for that.

They do take calls! I was worried about this same thing last year and managed to get through. The menu system is just a nightmare to navigate šŸ˜‚ You have to select options for individual income tax, then payment issues, then verification, THEN finally refund status. At least that's how it worked for me when I called. Worth trying if you're anxious about the money hitting your account on time!

Chime user here w/ NJ refunds for past 4 yrs. Here's the deal: Fed refunds = up to 5 days early w/ Chime. NJ state = usually 0-1 days early, max. NJ batches their ACH diff than IRS. Last yr my DDD was 3/15, got it 3/14 around 6pm. Yr before was exactly on DDD. It's not like fed where you can count on early deposit. Chime can only post what NJ sends, and NJ doesn't send early like IRS does. Just my exp.

Does this timing apply to all online banks or just Chime specifically? I'm wondering if: ā€¢ Credit unions process differently ā€¢ Traditional banks hold longer ā€¢ Other online banks like Current or Varo might be faster

I've tracked this for several tax seasons - January 15, 2022, January 23, 2023, and January 29, 2024. The pattern is consistent across most online banks. The key difference isn't the bank but when NJ Treasury initiates the ACH. They typically send batches on Tuesdays and Thursdays with 2-day processing windows. So a March 11th DDD was likely in the March 7th batch, meaning most online banks would show it March 9-11 depending on their posting policies.

Let me walk you through what actually happens with NJ state refunds: 1. First, NJ assigns a DDD when your return is fully processed 2. Then, they schedule an ACH transfer 1-2 business days before the DDD 3. Next, the ACH system processes this over 24-48 hours 4. Finally, your bank posts it when they receive the completed ACH The warning here: I've seen people count on early deposits and make financial commitments, only to have the money arrive exactly on the DDD. Unlike federal refunds, NJ state is much less predictable with early deposits. Don't make any critical plans for that money before the actual DDD.
