Molina Healthcare hasn't sent my 1095-A form yet for my taxes
So I'm filing taxes myself for the first time ever and I'm already super lost with this healthcare stuff. I signed up for Molina Healthcare last year but honestly can't remember if I got it through the marketplace or directly through them. Everything I've read says if you got insurance through the marketplace, you need this 1095-A form for your taxes. It's almost April and I haven't received anything from Molina! Are they supposed to send me a 1095-A form or do I not need to report it? I'm freaking out a bit because I want to file soon and don't want to mess this up. Anyone deal with Molina before and know what I should do?

You only need Form 1095-A if you purchased your health insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace (Healthcare.gov or your state's marketplace). If you got Molina directly through the insurer or through your employer, you'd typically receive a 1095-B or 1095-C instead. The easiest way to check is to log into your Healthcare.gov account (or state marketplace) and see if you have coverage listed there. If you do, your 1095-A should be available to download directly from your marketplace account. If you can't find it there, call the Marketplace at 1-800-318-2596 to request it. If you didn't get your insurance through the marketplace, you don't need to wait for a 1095-A to file your taxes. You'd just check the box saying you had full-year coverage.

•Thank you! I'm not 100% sure if I signed up through the marketplace or directly with Molina. Do you know if there's a way I can figure this out? I tried calling Molina but their wait times are insane.

•The most reliable way is to check if you have an account on Healthcare.gov or your state's marketplace website. If you purchased through the marketplace, you would have created an account there. Try logging in with your email. Another clue is whether you received any premium tax credits or subsidies that lowered your monthly payment. If you did, that almost certainly means you went through the marketplace, since premium subsidies are only available for marketplace plans. If you're still unsure, you can also check if you have any emails from Healthcare.gov or your state marketplace from when you initially signed up. Those would confirm you went through the marketplace.

I went through something similar with my insurance last year! After weeks of frustration trying to get my 1095-A, I found this service called taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) that saved me tons of stress. You upload your tax documents and they use AI to analyze what you have, what's missing, and what you need to do. For my situation, they analyzed my insurance info and confirmed I needed the 1095-A, then gave me step-by-step instructions for requesting it from my state marketplace. Their document analyzer caught that I actually HAD received my 1095-A but it was buried in an email I'd missed completely! Might be worth a try if you're not getting anywhere with Molina's customer service.

•Did you actually need to wait for the 1095-A to file your taxes? I'm in a similar boat and wondering if I can just go ahead and file without it?

•I'm skeptical about these AI services with tax docs. How secure is it to upload all your personal info to some random website? And do they actually help you get the forms or just tell you what you're missing?

•If you bought insurance through the marketplace and received any premium tax credits, you absolutely need the 1095-A to file correctly. Without it, you won't know the exact amount of premium tax credits you received, which is required for Form 8962. Regarding security concerns, I totally understand being cautious. They use bank-level encryption for all document uploads and don't store your documents permanently. They don't actually request forms for you - they analyze what you have and give you specific instructions for getting what you need. In my case, they helped me realize I already had the form but hadn't recognized it in my email.

Update on my situation: I tried that taxr.ai site mentioned above and it was actually super helpful! I uploaded my W-2 and some insurance emails, and their system confirmed I did get my Molina plan through the marketplace based on some language in the confirmation emails I had. The analyzer showed me exactly where to go on my state's marketplace website to download my 1095-A (which was buried in my account documents section). I was literally about to file without this info which would've been a huge mistake since I got about $2,800 in premium tax credits last year. Definitely saved me from a potential audit or having to file an amended return later!

If you're struggling to get through to Molina or the marketplace on the phone (those wait times are ridiculous!), I'd recommend trying Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). I was on hold with the marketplace for literally 3+ hours trying to get my missing 1095-A sorted out before I found this. They basically call and wait on hold for you, then call you when a real person finally picks up. You can see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c. I was super frustrated after multiple failed attempts to reach someone at the marketplace, but Claimyr got me connected to an agent in about 45 minutes (while I just went about my day). The agent was able to resend my 1095-A right away.

•Wait, how does this actually work? They just sit on hold for you? Do they listen to your private conversation with the IRS or marketplace?

•This sounds like total BS. Nothing is going to get you through to a government agency faster than just waiting on hold yourself. Sounds like a scam to take advantage of frustrated people.

•They use an automated system that holds your place in the phone queue and monitors for when a human answers. Once a real person picks up, you get an immediate call connecting you directly to that agent. They don't listen to your conversation at all - they just bridge the call to you once someone answers. And no, it's definitely not a scam. I was skeptical too until I tried it. The difference is their system can dial multiple numbers simultaneously and try different options until they get through, something I couldn't do on my own. They specifically know which prompts and options get you to a human fastest for each agency. When I finally got connected, I resolved my 1095-A issue in just a few minutes after previously wasting hours on failed attempts.

Ok I need to eat my words about Claimyr from my comment above. I was super skeptical but after another failed 2-hour hold with the marketplace yesterday, I gave it a shot this morning. Got a call back in 37 minutes connecting me directly to a marketplace rep! They confirmed my Molina plan WAS through the marketplace and that my 1095-A had been generated but sent to an old email address. The rep resent it to my current email while I was on the phone. Just got it and now I can finally file my taxes. Honestly, that was worth it just to not waste another day on hold. Consider me converted!

One thing to know about Molina specifically - they're both a Medicaid provider AND a marketplace insurer depending on your state, which makes things extra confusing. If you have Medicaid through Molina, you wouldn't get a 1095-A at all (and generally don't need to report it). If you're still confused, just call your state's health insurance marketplace directly instead of Molina. They can tell you for sure if you have a marketplace plan and send you the 1095-A if needed.

•Omg this makes so much sense now! I think I might actually have Medicaid through Molina. I don't remember paying monthly premiums which I guess would be the case with a marketplace plan? So if I have Medicaid Molina, I don't need to worry about this 1095-A form at all?

•Correct! If you have Medicaid through Molina and aren't paying premiums, you don't need a 1095-A. Medicaid is considered qualifying health coverage, so you just check the box on your tax return saying you had full-year coverage. Some states send a 1095-B form for Medicaid coverage, but you don't need to wait for it to file your taxes. It's just for your records to prove you had coverage if asked. The easiest way to confirm is to call your state's Medicaid office and ask if your Molina plan is through Medicaid or the marketplace.

Just a heads up - even if you confirm you need the 1095-A, don't panic if you haven't received it yet. The deadline for insurance companies and marketplaces to send them out was technically January 31, but many are still sending them out. My friend works for a state marketplace and said they're dealing with massive backlogs this year. If you absolutely can't get yours in time, you can still file for an extension until October to give yourself more time to track down the form.

•Will filing an extension give more time to pay too? I'm expecting a refund because of the premium tax credit so I want to file asap.

•Filing an extension only extends the deadline to file your return, not to pay any taxes owed. But since you're expecting a refund, there's no penalty for filing late when the IRS owes you money. However, you won't get your refund until you actually file the return, so an extension would just delay getting your money back. If you can get your 1095-A sorted out soon, it's definitely better to file on time to get your refund faster.

Just wanted to add that if you're still not sure whether you went through the marketplace, check your bank or credit card statements from when you signed up. Marketplace payments usually show up as something like "CMS" or "Healthcare.gov" or your state's marketplace name, while direct Molina payments would just show as "Molina Healthcare." Also, if you received any advance premium tax credits (which would have lowered your monthly premium), that's a dead giveaway you went through the marketplace. Those credits are only available for marketplace plans, and if you got them, you absolutely need the 1095-A to reconcile them on Form 8962 when you file. One more tip - don't stress too much about the April deadline if you're still tracking this down. The tax filing deadline got moved to April 18th this year anyway, so you have a few extra days!
