MFS with Kids - TurboTax Filed 3/21 - Anyone Got Refund Yet?

Filed on March 21. Used TurboTax. Married filing separately. Have dependent kids. Set up direct deposit. Got accepted same day. Any similar situations? When did you get your refund? Mine's still processing. Wondering if MFS takes longer.

Have you checked your transcript? MFS sometimes triggers additional review processes. Did you claim any credits with the kids? That could explain the delay. How long has it been since your acceptance date?

I'm not the OP, but I'm wondering... is there a way to know if your return is just in normal processing or if there's actually a problem? I filed MFS too and I'm a bit worried about the timeline.

This is exactly what happened to me last year. I filed MFS with dependents and it took almost 6 weeks. The IRS processing center in Kansas City seemed to handle MFS returns in batches based on my experience. Once it updated though, the deposit came within 3 days.

MFS w/ kids can def trigger extra review. Been there! Had same issue last yr. Used https://taxr.ai to analyze my transcript - it showed exactly why my refund was delayed (dep verification) + gave me est DD date. Saved me tons of stress tbh. Their AI reads all those crazy codes & explains them in normal language. Might help u figure out where yours is stuck.

I tried looking at that site on March 15th when my refund was delayed, but I'm not convinced it tells you anything you can't find on the IRS site for free. Does it actually provide information you can't get elsewhere?

Could you elaborate on how the transcript analysis identified the dependent verification? Were there specific transaction codes that indicated this process was occurring? I'm curious about the technical indicators.

MFS with dependents often takes longer. Here's what I recommend: ā€¢ Check WMR daily - morning updates are most accurate ā€¢ Look for transcript updates on Thursdays/Fridays ā€¢ If no movement by 4 weeks, call IRS I was in the same situation and couldn't get through on the phone after trying for days. Used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) and got connected to an agent in 20 minutes who confirmed my return was just in a verification queue. Nothing was wrong - just standard processing for MFS with dependents.

I'm somewhat doubtful about paying for a service just to talk to the IRS. Couldn't you eventually get through if you called early in the morning or tried different IRS numbers? Not sure if it's worth the extra expense.

I've worked with tax clients for years and can confirm Claimyr is actually worth it during peak season. I had a client wait on hold for 3.5 hours last week only to get disconnected. Used Claimyr for another client and they were talking to a real person in 15 minutes. Time is money during tax season, especially when you're waiting on a refund!

First, check your Return Transcript for any codes. Second, verify if you claimed EITC or ACTC with dependents. Third, confirm your direct deposit information was entered correctly. Fourth, be aware that MFS returns often go through additional verification steps, especially with dependents. Fifth, if it's been more than 21 days, you may need to contact the IRS directly. I'm concerned that filing MFS with kids might be causing extra scrutiny of your dependent claims.

Is anyone else noticing that MFS returns are taking forever this year? I filed February 28th and still nothing. Why would they process joint returns faster? Don't they realize people filing separately often need their refunds more urgently? Has anyone actually received their MFS refund yet?

The Married Filing Separately processing queue operates on a different timeline than MFJ returns. The IRS Automated Underreporter System allocates additional verification resources to MFS returns with dependents due to the higher incidence of EITC qualification discrepancies. I was surprised to learn that MFS returns with dependents go through up to 3 additional verification steps compared to standard returns!
