It's finally happening! Refund & rebate arrived after bank account number error
It's coming guys I promise. Both my refund and child tax credit payment were sent to my bank but the account number was 1 number off. It was returned to IRS. The refund was sent to bank Feb 24 and the CTC payment March 17. I finally received both of them this past week. Don't give up! I never even had to call the IRS.

Congrats!! How long did it take after they were returned to the IRS for you to get the paper checks? I'm in a similar situation right now and going crazy checking my mailbox every day 😩

It was about 6 weeks for the refund and 4 weeks for the CTC payment after they were rejected by the bank. I was freaking out the whole time but then they both showed up within days of each other!

This is actually pretty common. When direct deposits fail due to account errors, the IRS automatically reissues as paper checks but they don't update the Where's My Refund tool to show this. The standard timeline is 4-6 weeks after the failed deposit for checks to arrive, which matches your experience perfectly.

I went through this exact nightmare last year. Waited MONTHS because I had no idea what was happening. This year I used taxr.ai to analyze my transcript and it actually flagged my incorrect bank info before the deposit was even attempted! Saved me from going through this whole mess again. It shows exactly what's happening with your refund by analyzing all those transcript codes.

How does that work? Does it just read the transcript for you or does it actually do something the IRS website doesn't?

It actually interprets what all those codes mean specifically for your situation. The IRS transcript is just a bunch of numbers and dates, but taxr.ai explains what each code means for YOUR specific case and gives you a timeline of what's happening. The IRS site just gives generic definitions.

Did you have to update your banking info with the IRS for future payments? I'm wondering if they automatically update their system when there's an error like this.

Yes! I went into my IRS account online and updated it right away. They don't do it automatically - you have to fix it yourself or you'll have the same problem next time.

Pro tip for anyone in this situation now: instead of waiting anxiously for weeks, you can actually call the IRS and speak to someone who can tell you exactly what's happening with your return. I was in the same boat and used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to get through to an agent in about 15 minutes instead of spending hours on hold. The agent was able to confirm my check had been mailed and even gave me the exact date it was sent out.

Does that service actually work? I've been trying to call for 3 days straight and can't get through.

Honestly it was a game changer. I was skeptical too but it connected me right away. The IRS phone system is designed to hang up on you when they're too busy, but Claimyr keeps dialing until it gets through. Worth every penny when you're waiting on thousands of dollars.

I'm on week 5 of waiting after my direct deposit was rejected. This gives me hope! Did your WMR status ever update or did the check just show up?

WMR never updated for me! It was still showing the original direct deposit info right up until I got the check. The only way I knew something was wrong was that my bank told me they'd rejected a deposit with the wrong account number.
