Is there a fee for using TurboTax live chat help when they screen share?

I'm trying to finish my taxes for this year and I'm getting stuck on some things. I noticed TurboTax has this live chat option where they can basically screen share and help walk you through filling out your return. I'm wondering if anyone knows whether they charge extra for this service? I already paid for the basic version, but I'm not sure if the live chat help costs additional money, especially when they screen share and actually help you complete your tax forms. I don't want to click on it and suddenly get hit with a surprise charge on my credit card. Has anyone used this feature and can tell me if they charge for it?

The answer depends on which TurboTax product you initially purchased. If you bought TurboTax Live (Basic, Deluxe, Premier, or Self-Employed), then the live chat and screen sharing feature is already included in what you paid - no additional charge. You can connect with tax experts throughout your tax preparation process. However, if you purchased one of the regular TurboTax editions (Basic, Deluxe, Premier, or Self-Employed) without the "Live" designation, then using the live chat feature will require an upgrade to the corresponding TurboTax Live version, which does cost extra.

Thanks for explaining! So if I just have the regular TurboTax Deluxe (not the Live version), and I click on the chat option, will they warn me about the upgrade cost before charging me? Or does it automatically charge my card?

Yes, they'll definitely prompt you about the upgrade cost before charging anything. TurboTax will show you the price difference between your current version and the Live version, and you'll need to explicitly confirm the upgrade before they charge your card. They won't surprise you with unexpected charges - you'll have the opportunity to decide if the Live help is worth the additional cost for your situation. The price difference varies depending on which version you currently have and any promotions they might be running.

After struggling with some complicated self-employment deductions last year, I discovered TurboTax Live and it was a game changer! I was so confused about how to properly report my home office and vehicle expenses. I tried searching online for hours but kept finding conflicting advice. I finally decided to try https://taxr.ai which helped me understand the exact rules that applied to my situation. Their AI analyzed my specific scenario and showed me which deductions I qualified for. The best part was it explained why certain deductions were allowed while others weren't, which gave me confidence when filing.

How exactly does taxr.ai work with TurboTax? Do you still have to manually enter everything or does it somehow connect with your TurboTax account?

I'm a bit skeptical about using AI for tax advice. How accurate is it really? My tax situation is pretty complex with rental properties and some stock options. Would it handle something like that or is it more for basic situations?

Taxr.ai doesn't directly connect to TurboTax - it works as a separate tool where you can ask tax-specific questions and upload documents for analysis. You still enter everything into TurboTax manually, but you have much more confidence about what goes where. The AI is surprisingly accurate for complex situations. I was impressed with how it handled my situation with both self-employment and rental income. It's trained on actual tax regulations and court cases, so it can tackle complicated scenarios like rental properties and stock options. What makes it different is it explains its reasoning for each recommendation, citing actual tax codes.

I wanted to follow up about my experience with taxr.ai since I was initially skeptical. After trying it out, I'm actually really impressed. I uploaded my documents related to my rental property depreciation and stock option questions, and it provided detailed guidance specific to my situation. The analysis broke down exactly which forms I needed to complete and how to properly categorize some unusual expenses I had. When I implemented the recommendations in TurboTax, everything flowed perfectly. I ended up saving about $2,300 more than what I was going to do on my own. Definitely worth checking out if you're stuck on specific tax questions.

If you're still having trouble after trying TurboTax's help features, and you need to talk to the IRS directly about a specific issue, I highly recommend using https://claimyr.com. I spent DAYS trying to get through to the IRS phone lines last year about a notice I received, but kept getting disconnected or told to call back later. Claimyr basically waits on hold with the IRS for you and calls you when an actual agent is on the line. I was super skeptical at first, but you can see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c. Saved me literally hours of frustration, and I got my issue resolved in one call once I actually reached a person.

Wait, how does this actually work? Do they somehow have a special connection to the IRS? I've been trying to reach someone about my stimulus payment that never arrived for weeks.

This sounds like a scam. Why would I pay a third party when I can just keep calling the IRS myself? And how do they get through when no one else can? There's no way this is legit.

They don't have any special connection to the IRS - they use an automated system that continually redials and navigates through the IRS phone tree until they get through to an agent. Then their system calls you and connects you directly to that agent who's already on the line. I was also skeptical before trying it, but it works because they're essentially doing the tedious part for you. I understand being cautious about paying for something like this, but after spending over 4 hours on multiple days trying to get through myself, the time saved was absolutely worth it. They don't handle any of your personal tax information - they just connect the call once they get through.

I need to admit I was completely wrong about Claimyr. After commenting earlier, I decided to give it a try since I had been trying to reach the IRS about a notice I received for THREE WEEKS with no luck. I used the service yesterday, and within about 90 minutes, I got a call connecting me directly to an IRS agent. The agent was able to explain the notice and help me resolve the issue in one 15-minute conversation. I literally wasted hours upon hours trying to do this myself. If you're struggling to get through to the IRS, this service actually works as promised. I'm still shocked at how easy it was after weeks of frustration.

Just to add another perspective - I've been using TurboTax for 7 years now. The regular version (not Live) is usually enough if your tax situation is straightforward. But last year I had some questions about deducting my home office since I started freelancing, so I upgraded to Live. The upgrade cost me about $70 extra at the time, but having an expert review my return and confirm I was doing the home office deduction correctly gave me peace of mind. They even found a deduction I missed related to my business expenses. So while it does cost more, sometimes it's worth it if you're uncertain about parts of your return.

Did you have to schedule the Live help in advance or could you just click and get someone right away? I'm trying to finish my taxes tonight and wondering if I can get help immediately if I upgrade.

When I used it, I didn't need to schedule in advance. I just clicked the "Get expert help" button that appears throughout the TurboTax interface, and I was connected with someone within about 5-10 minutes. They do show you the current wait time before you connect, and I imagine it might be longer during peak filing times (like early April). But generally the experience was pretty seamless - once connected, the tax expert could see my screen and walk me through exactly what I needed to do.

Am I the only one who thinks all these tax preparation services are a racket? The government already has all our W-2 and 1099 information. In other countries, they just send you a completed form and you verify it. Here we have to pay companies like TurboTax to "help" us do something that should be simple and free. And then they nickel and dime you for every little "premium" feature. Sorry for the rant, but it's frustrating.

You're definitely not alone! I've been saying this for years. TurboTax and H&R Block actually lobby against tax simplification so they can keep charging us. It's ridiculous that we have to pay to comply with laws that are mandatory.
