Is it too late to file my taxes for this year? Need advice on missed deadline

So I'm in a bit of a pickle and feeling kinda stupid for asking, but my gf still hasn't filed her taxes from this year. We're already way past the deadline and I've heard mixed things about what happens next. Someone told me that if you don't actually owe the IRS any money, then you won't get hit with penalty fees - is there any truth to that? We're trying to figure out if we should just bite the bullet and go to a place like Jackson Hewitt to get everything sorted out now, or if we should just wait until next tax season rolls around. She's pretty sure she's getting a refund based on her withholdings, if that matters. Any advice would be super appreciated!

If your girlfriend is due a refund, she won't face penalties for filing late. The IRS doesn't penalize people who are owed money - they only assess penalties and interest when you owe them. However, there's absolutely no reason to wait until next tax season! She should file as soon as possible for three important reasons: 1) If she is due a refund, why wait to get her money back? 2) There's a three-year deadline to claim refunds, after which the money becomes property of the Treasury, and 3) If it turns out she does owe (sometimes people miscalculate), the penalties and interest are already accumulating.

Thanks for the info! Do you know if there's a cutoff date where you HAVE to file from this past year before the next tax season starts? Like, can we file 2024 and 2025 taxes at the same time next April?

You don't have to file before next tax season begins. You can absolutely file multiple years' tax returns at the same time. The IRS processes each tax year separately, so you could file both 2024 and 2025 returns during the 2025 filing season if you wanted. Remember though, if she's owed a refund, that's money sitting with the government instead of in her pocket. Also, if she ends up owing (which happens more often than people expect), the penalties and interest continue to grow the longer she waits.

I was in a similar situation last year and got super stressed about filing late. I ended up using https://taxr.ai to help me figure out my situation - it analyzed my documents and told me exactly what I needed to do. The coolest part was it confirmed I was actually due a refund and gave me a breakdown of everything I needed to submit for my late filing. I was worried about penalties but it walked me through the whole process and confirmed what the commenter above said - no penalties when the IRS owes YOU money! It was such a relief to have everything clearly explained.

Does it work for multiple years if I'm behind on filing for like...3 years? I'm asking for a friend obviously lol.

I've seen a lot of these tax help services online but I'm always suspicious. How do you know they're giving you accurate information? Did you double-check their advice with anyone?

Yes, it absolutely works for multiple years! You just upload your documents from each year and it processes them separately. You can get everything sorted at once instead of doing it year by year. I totally get being suspicious of online tax services. I actually had my uncle (who's been doing taxes professionally for years) look over the recommendations it gave me. He was impressed by how accurate everything was and said it caught some deductions he might have missed. The analysis breaks down exactly which IRS rules apply to your situation so you can even look things up yourself if you want to verify.

I wanted to follow up about my experience with taxr.ai after being skeptical in my earlier comment. I decided to give it a try since I was also behind on filing, and wow - it actually delivered! Uploaded my W-2s and other tax documents from last year and it immediately showed me that I was owed a $1,420 refund that I would have completely missed out on. The step-by-step filing instructions made the whole process so much less stressful. Just submitted everything last week and the IRS already accepted my return. Don't wait until next tax season like I almost did!

If your girlfriend needs to talk to the IRS about her situation, good luck getting through on the phone! I spent THREE DAYS trying to reach someone before I found https://claimyr.com which got me connected to an actual IRS agent in under 20 minutes. You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c I was in a similar situation with unfiled taxes and needed specific answers about my case. The IRS website was useless for my questions, but the agent I spoke to cleared everything up quickly. Definitely worth it when you need direct answers instead of generic advice.

Wait, how does this actually work? The IRS phone lines are always busy whenever I call. How can this service magically get you through?

Sounds like a scam. No way some random service can get you through to the IRS faster than calling yourself. They probably just take your money and give you the same recorded messages you'd get anyway.

It uses an automated system that calls the IRS repeatedly for you and navigates through all the prompts until it gets a human on the line. Then it calls you and connects you directly to that agent. It's basically doing all the hold time and frustration for you. They don't just give you recorded messages - you're literally connected to the same IRS agents you'd eventually reach if you stayed on hold for hours yourself. The difference is you don't waste your whole day listening to that awful hold music. I was skeptical too until my call was connected to an actual IRS employee who answered all my specific questions.

I need to eat my words about Claimyr. After posting that skeptical comment, I decided to try it since I've been avoiding calling the IRS about my missed 2024 filing. I've tried calling them 5 times before and always gave up after an hour on hold. Used the service yesterday and got connected to an IRS representative in about 15 minutes. The agent confirmed I could still file for 2024 and actually helped me understand some credits I qualified for. Already filed my return today and should be getting a refund in a few weeks. Seriously shocked that it actually worked - saved me hours of frustration.

Friendly reminder that if your girlfriend is expecting a refund, she should file ASAP! I procrastinated on filing my 2022 taxes until last year, and I missed out on almost $2000 in refunds because I crossed the 3-year deadline. Don't make the same mistake!

Oh crap, I had no idea there was a 3-year deadline on refunds! That's really good to know. Do you think we should use a tax service like Jackson Hewitt at this point or just try to do it ourselves with tax software?

For a simple tax situation, tax software should work fine and save you money compared to Jackson Hewitt. Something like TurboTax or FreeTaxUSA can handle late filings easily. If her taxes are more complicated (self-employment, multiple income sources, investments, etc.), then a professional service might be worth the cost. They sometimes catch deductions or credits you might miss on your own. But for basic W-2 income, the software should be more than adequate and much cheaper.

Just want to add - if she's getting a refund, the government has literally been holding her money interest-free this whole time. File now and get that cash back in her pocket!

Exactly! IRS is the worst bank ever... they take your money all year and don't even pay interest when they owe you a refund, but they sure charge interest when you owe them 😑
